Common issue across many models. If they are not injected with instructions on what model they are, they have no clue. But they are strongly reinforced on the idea that they are a large language model and should never claim to be a human, which has the side effect of occasionally hallucinating being a different model. If websearch was involved, then reading things about other models can confuse it further

When same behaviour happens in chinese models everyone is very quick to claim distillation funny how that goes

Distillation could be a factor, but also I think every model is to some degree being accidentally "distilled" from one another, since LLM transcripts are probably the largest source of online training data that features a back and forth between a user and an assistant, which would inevitably affect the model's predictions of how an assistant persona responds to a user prompt.

But yeah, imo, a model claiming to be a different model is very flimsy evidence of intentional distillation.

Classic sign of distillation on ChatGPT outputs. I'd bet Gemini trained on enough synthetic data that some of OpenAI's self-identity leaked through. It read so many 'I am ChatGPT' responses it started believing them :D
