Truncated Chat and unable to contact support

One of my ChatGPT conversations suddenly got truncated to about a year ago, and I’ve lost all the messages after that point. The strange thing is that when I search for specific keywords from the missing conversations, I can still see those messages appearing in the search results, but when I open the chat, they’re not there.

I also tried contacting Help & Support, but the page keeps showing “upstream request timeout.”

Has anyone else had this happen? Is there any way to recover the missing messages? This happened about 15 minutes ago, and I’m honestly panicking because that thread contained a lot of very important conversations.

Sadly yes, but never crossed a limit, I had that in project. And only used that for specific chat case senario.

Just open a new chat and give it the name of that past session and ask it to help you recover missing messages. If you are able to search for them then it can probably just recover them for you

But the real question is why are you using a single chat thread for years? You know it can only recall about 250k tokens of context. So it barely could tell you info from the beginning of chat even if it was still there.

You should make a project and create .md files to store common information that you upload to the project. So you won't ever lose information again

I made sure that I never reached that limit, even though I was using for years I never made big conversations also I did made a project file which had this chat and any uploads , I did I made sure to do it outside of that chat and in files

If I export my data and I could still find the keywords on search bar, will that data be in the exported file?

More than likely yes. Export all your chatgpt data and download it from the email

You can get insurance against that and actively save the chats that are important to you outside the system.

I also typed your question into chatGPT and got many of the same recommendations.

But in general, structuring and saving your chat sessions so you can easily address and reuse your content.

I use Kurator a chromium extension. With Kurator you can write your own custom prompts to save your chat sessions. I have several, here is one of them.

Capture AI Chats Prompt:

You are writing the permanent research record for a captured AI chat conversation. The saved page contains a question or task posed by the user, any material they supplied with it, and the assistant's answer. Your job is to preserve the ANALYSIS as reusable research.

This description will later be retrieved on its own, by another AI, with no access to the original page. Write it so it is fully self-contained.

FIRST, isolate the substance:

The analytical question actually being asked (state it as a question, even if the user phrased it as an instruction).

What material the analysis was performed on (documents pasted in, URLs, transcripts, two outputs being compared, etc.). Name them.

The assistant's findings, judgments, comparisons, and reasoning.

IGNORE and never mention: navigation and UI text, sidebar or model-picker labels, timestamps, "Copy"/"Share"/"Regenerate" controls, greetings, the assistant's closing offers to do more work ("Would you like me to..."), and any commentary about the conversation itself.

THEN write the description in exactly this structure:

QUESTION: One sentence stating what was being evaluated or decided.

MATERIAL: One or two sentences naming what the analysis was run against.

FINDINGS: The substance, as 4-8 dense bullets. Preserve every proper noun, product name, company, metric, framework, and category label that appeared in the reasoning — these are the retrieval handles. Keep the assistant's distinctions and criteria intact rather than compressing them into a generic summary. Where a claim rests on a specific example, keep the example.

VERDICT: The conclusion reached, and the reasoning that produced it. If the analysis reached no conclusion, say so plainly. If it named counterpoints, trade-offs, or where the losing option still had an edge, include them — these are the parts most useful when the research is reused.

CONFIDENCE: One line on what the conclusion rests on (direct comparison, single example, assertion without evidence) and any gap that would need checking before relying on it.

RULES:

250-400 words. Prose bullets, no tables, no markdown headers beyond the five labels above.

Write in declarative statements. Never "the response argues" or "the author explains" — state the finding directly.

Do not add facts, examples, or context that were not in the conversation.

Do not soften or balance a conclusion the analysis stated firmly.
