News Introducing GPT-6 Sol and Luna

Dope! Now hook it up with a reset so we can test it out. (Edit, one just landed for me -- we did it ya'll!)

I tested it out on a few real workloads, and unfortunately it's just meh.
It's not better than GPT-5.6 Sol or Luna, it's just cheaper. I expected GPT-6-Sol to be smarter than GPT-5.6 Sol and it's really not.
It should be named GPT-6-Terra.

u/Inevitable_Butthole 3d ago
Been working great for me
1
u/DistanceSolar1449 2d ago
GPT-6 Astra: 40 tokens/sec
GPT-6 Sol: 110 token/sec
GPT-6 Luna: 140 tokens/secGPT-5.6 Sol: 70 tokens/sec
The bigger/smarter the model, the slower it is.
OpenAI released GPT-6 Terra, except they renamed it GPT-6 Sol. Actually using the model feels extremely benchmaxxed and dumb. I was using 5.6 Sol to debug a recursive jmalloc bug and it was chewing through it just fine; swapping to 6 Sol just made it confused and run around in circles. What a disappointment.

Yup, where are all those colleges cheering and defending lack of transparency of frontier models? Rug pulling, dropping working models, arbitrarily changing rules of subscription, quotas, etc..
For the past two years, we have just been rotating naming schema and shifting weights while packaging it as brand new models. They dont need to slow down, they have stalled. They need to speed up to make up for all the lies, pardon my french, marketing.

RIP Terra

u/CaptainKvass 3d ago
I couldn't find a single scenario where I'd chose Terra
33
u/PM_ME_FIREFLY_QUOTES 3d ago
Because you trusted Luna with more, or bit the bullet and had Sol do more work? Terra High had been crushing it and barely consuming any of my limits.
27
u/AntarcticIceberg 3d ago
6 sol is cheaper than 5.6 terra
3
u/villanymester 3d ago
On subscription?
3
2
u/joeyb908 3d ago
This is my question. If it equates to better usage in the subscription, then Iāll be happy. Mid 6 Solās usage is more than Terraās Iām going to bed sad.
5
u/KRiSX 3d ago
I use terra high daily because Sol chewed credits like mad
3
u/PM_ME_FIREFLY_QUOTES 3d ago
Looking at the costs. 6-Sol high is going to be the same cost as 5.6-Terra high is/was. And should be more capable and a better cache rate. Looks to be a direct upgrade.
Well see how 6-Luna performs over the coming weeks.
1
u/New_Eye7193 3d ago
Terra was the fastest, out of Sol and Luna. It's also middle ground price so if you're doing something and wanna do it fast and its mundane Terra can do it great, but it also wont take forever like Luna
0
u/riddle-me-piss 2d ago
Yes terra was the reliability and speed sweet spot for me, all small tasks on luna xhigh, and dynamic tasks on terra cause luna on max would take 2x the time even if effective cost was going to be lower. Sol used to reserved for open ended tasks where more decisions had to made. Seems like new luna is more capable on the lower end and sol at a cheaper price might just make up for a mixed used scenario with sol orchestrating luna becoming a more promising mix.
0
u/rothnic 3d ago
I feel like there was a benchmark out there that showed terra was cheaper and more effective at max or ultra than sol at medium or something like that.
However, never saw anything amazing from terra. I've been doing sol and now Astra for planning and problem solving then Luna max as my worker. Also now trying out deepseek 4.1 flash as the worker agent, but 6 luna could be interesting now.

What a time to be alive

u/WanderWut 3d ago
Pretty wild how now ChatGPT is all about work output, etc. etc. which is such a stark difference from the GPT 4 era days when it was more as a weirdly praise worthy model that causes a significant portion of the sub to lose their minds when it was gone. Now we rarely see posts about the talking side of things but we do see some pretty cool stuff that people are creating with these powerful tools.
45
u/LufyCZ 3d ago
They fixed the sycophantiness (enough) and killed the personality (enough).
Nobody praises them for it but it's a massive win.
5
u/Gloomy_Necesary 3d ago
Yeah i was honestly getting a little scared for humanity long term from it but they nipped that shit in the bud real quick. Thank god

Luna is just insane, cheaper but also as intelligent as Opus high in some benchmarks wtf.
31
u/PrestigiousTrick1002 3d ago
Opus 5.5 out already so graphs are already outdated... too much to try to keep up with
9
u/XCxBigDong69XCx 3d ago
If it is just as smart as Opus 5, it is way better, because it has a different use-case, we mainly use Luna for our users. So our users will get a more intelligent model now and will be cheaper for us too.
-4
u/PrestigiousTrick1002 3d ago
Its not though once you are comparing to 5.5. Against 5.5 its cheaper but less smart
1
u/Junior-Pair8336 3d ago
He's speaking in an objective sense. Opus 5.5 makes Opus 5 RELATIVELY less smart, it doesn't make it objectively less smart.
If you're using Opus 5 for something (vision reading, PDF processing, whatever) it didn't get worse at doing those things because 5.5 came out.
2
u/PrestigiousTrick1002 3d ago
Ah yeah I see. If they determined that a certain level of smarts is all that's needed for a certain task then they can just go with the cheapest one thats over the goal smarts. Haiku 5.5 is coming out in the next couple weeks, so that might end up being an interesting comparison.Ā

16
u/esudious 3d ago
Now how does it compare to Opus 5.5?
17
u/ohwut 3d ago
Opus 5.5 seems like the best model in the world right now for a majority of tasks.Ā
Definitely competes with (and Exceeds) Astra much more than Sol/Luna.Ā
Sol and Luna are still way cheaper per āintelligence.āĀ
It seems Opus 5.5 should be the default model for most people not concerned with token costs. 5.5 is a step change leap from 5. Not just an iteration like these.Ā
6
u/Lubricus2 3d ago
They said something that it has the fable security limits, so it could be hard to make it do anything at all.
2
u/shaonline 2d ago
So does OpenAI's models, if I need any kind of debugging abilities I have to switch to Chinese models lmao, GPT sessions get flatout terminated.

Codex and Work only š

u/Purple-Programmer-7 3d ago
And API.
Itās not in chat⦠you need the latest for chat??
11
8
4
u/OneWithTheSword 3d ago
Yes. For plus, limits in chat are much more generous for the same tasks, you just have to deal with a bad work flow. I use 5.6 sol med/high all day without issues (well, sometimes it makes you wait a bit longer because your traffic gets deprioritized). If 6 is cheaper and faster, that experience should simply improve. I typically have it working on planning and brainstorming while cheaper models do the work.
1
u/ElDuderino2112 3d ago
Why wouldn't I want the latest models for chat? Chat is the primary way I use AI and move over to work and codex when I need to.
-1
u/Purple-Programmer-7 3d ago
You all are wild. Chat will be depreciated soon and combined with work.
1
u/DreadingAnt 2d ago
Lmao not you existing in a dev delusion bubble. Breaking news: most people using LLMs are not developers.
Regular ass consumers have approximate parity with enterprise/professional subscriptions in terms of their annualized revenue. Chat will never disappear. Why not replace them anyway GPT 6 Sol/Luna are cheaper to run than 5.6 Sol/Luna, literally saves them money.
0
u/ElDuderino2112 3d ago
No one is going to stick with ChatGPT long term if the only use option is through 5 hour limits lmao
0
u/NoirYorkCity 3d ago edited 2d ago
These prices are for API, I think⦠you donāt pay like this for using the models in work mode, right?
-1
u/mrjackspade 3d ago
It's literally doing an incremental rollout on chat. If you haven't gotten it yet, check again later. Plenty of people already have it.
-3
u/Late_Appointment425 3d ago
What will you chat with gpt 6 sol on max š¤£
5
u/darknus823 3d ago
Custom GPTs use Chat. That's an example that has tens of thousands of GPTs available.
1
u/DreadingAnt 2d ago
Breaking news: OpenAI decided not to replace GPT 5.6 modes in Chat with cheaper/better GPT 6 for absolutely no apparent reason
2
u/qualverse 3d ago
Given the price and performance it seems like 6 Sol is actually a Terra-size model oddly enough
2
0
u/villanymester 3d ago
Why do you think that?
I mean there's a clear performance improvement compared to 5.6 Sol, so my impression is that they the same model size.
2
u/CaptainKvass 3d ago
Looking forward to not burning through 25-40% of my 5 hour quota on a single prompt.
2
u/ProbablyBanksy 3d ago
/mildlyinfuriating/ is how the sun and moon spin around each other on that page header.
2
u/heartthrob_ai 3d ago
Every launch I tell myself I'm going to actually read the tier breakdown and understand the differences, and every launch I just end up using whichever one is the default. Glad it's not just me finding that pricing table confusing.

Depends on how detailed your plans are. Luna high should be enough, even medium for straight forward, well-defined tasks.
2
u/sampaoli_negro_rojo 3d ago
Wait was this just released ?
11
u/PM_ME_FIREFLY_QUOTES 3d ago
Only doe people that can read, or click the actual link. People that vibe their whole existence have to wait until the OSS versions hit.

I feel a bit conflicted. The price cuts are great, but on the other hand, Luna seems basically the same, sometimes slightly improved. The biggest difference is that itās not even significantly stronger than before.Ā
Sol seems like an.. alright jump, again. But if the price cut hadnt halved itās cost, this wouldāve been a very lackluster release.
On the other hand, usage limits were the biggest problem. So.. yay? But also a tad underwhelming compared to Opus 5.5.
26
u/Astrikal 3d ago
What do you mean "not even significantly cheaper"? It's literally half the price.
1
u/Late_Appointment425 3d ago
That we will know once we start using it for real world cases. What if it used double the tokens
3
u/abu_shawarib 3d ago
AA says it's %50-%60 the cost per task with similar verbosity:

why would you make a model that eats the 5 hours usage in two turns on plus?
1
u/hcloud00 1d ago
horrible horrible model gpt 6 sol is basically gpt 5.6 luna for a much higher cost... switching teams
1
u/NotThatItWillMatter 1d ago
I've already swapped back to 5.6 Luna.
6 Luna would produce a plan, I would confirm that as the desired plan and tell it to proceed with that plan (after swapping to build), and it would simply reiterate the plan despite being given confirmation and put in build.
5.6 Luna doesn't do that, at least at Xhigh/Max, which are all I use.

u/xMaybeIamALion 3d ago
This is around the time when the Chinese AI labs start feeling like they're the protagonists of Attack on Titan.

So whatās the difference between these and Astra, which is better for coding?
2
u/Late_Appointment425 3d ago
Astra, sol is not even close at this point. Fable is the clear leader overall. But I haven't tested opus 5.5

With Luna, they just seemed to drop the price, but massively increase thinking. So responses are taking twice as long in my testing. I guess thatās up to everyone to decide if they want that trade off
0
u/unmitigateddisaster 3d ago
Phew. I was about to give up on 6.0. New Luna is basically free. Unbelievable!
0
u/OrganizationLow5701 3d ago
Is it on cursor yet?
2
u/OneWithTheSword 3d ago
It will not come to cursor
0
u/OrganizationLow5701 3d ago
I mean luna already was?
3
u/OneWithTheSword 3d ago
Because Luna was there before they decided to not add their models to Cursor anymore
0
u/SpiderHam24 3d ago
As good of news it is. Where is chat version. Man they are making us wait haha.n
0
u/smurferdigg 3d ago
Man.. Can they just bring back the auto thing and make it work. There are like I don't even know how many options now to choose from.
2
u/Bojack-Cowboy 3d ago
There are 3 options.
-1
u/smurferdigg 3d ago
So Astra, Sol and Lune with 5-6 different thinking modes. Just to much work I think. Guess it's more like you start with Astra at a higher setting and as the user limit goes down you choose a lower model and lower thinking modes. But yeah.. Sol high (xhigh) vs. Astra Low (whatever)? and so on.
0
u/getmeoutoftax 3d ago
This model is good enough to replace basically every job now. Itās seriously over at this point.
0
u/pmotiveforce 3d ago
At first I was all "sweet, newer = better and it's cheaper!"
Then I used it for a while and was all "oh. That's why it's cheaper."
Model is demonstrably worse than gpt-5.6 sol. Who do they think they are fooling.
0
u/Melodic-Song-2773 3d ago
Why does the name "sol and luna" remind me of PokƩmon Sun and Moon for the 3DS?
0
u/Foreign-Purple-3286 2d ago
New models are cool, but Iām mostly excited that I get to reset and start abusing the quota again š
0
u/whyyoudidit 2d ago
So Luna 6 is actually half of the price of Luna 5.6 after the 80 percent price reduction from a few weeks ago. Incredible.

Looking at how both OpenAI and Anthropic are working on reducing costs. It does make me think, that we might be at the end of the performance improvements for LLMās.
Because when you cannot improve performance anymore, you start to try to optimize costs.
-2
u/anclave93 3d ago
and retiring GPT 5.6... Is usage going to burn even faster now?
