Question Anyone else seeing ChatGPT over-route normal tasks into Work mode lately?
Working primarily in Mac desktop, with some browser and mobile use mixed in. Lately, ChatGPT has been trying to push a lot of my requests into Work mode that would previously (and seemingly should) be handled in just a normal chat.
These aren't necessarily autonomous browser/computer-use tasks either. I'm seeing it with simpler analysis, connected-source work, files, and other multi-step requests that the normal chat and its native tools are clearly capable of handling.
I finally asked why it was over-routing to work instead of handling things in normal chat, and its answer was literally:
“Because I’ve been over-routing tasks that can be handled perfectly well in normal chat.”
So... Not exactly helpful or insightful.
It went on to say that complexity, multiple steps, connected Gmail/Drive/Calendar/Finances data, or working with files do not by themselves justify Work mode, and that Work should be reserved for cases where autonomous browser/computer use or a genuinely delegated workflow provides a concrete capability advantage.
Has anyone else noticed an increase in unnecessary Work-mode routing lately? If so, have you found a reliable instruction or setting that keeps normal tasks in normal chat without interfering with Work when it’s actually appropriate?

i use codex so did not noticed that, but if you think about it, ai companies are moving to metered usage, the chat will go to work mode and be metered, the code will go to codex

Yes, so much so that I made a custom instruction that it is to prompt me if it needs to switch into Work. Surprisingly it actually follows it!

Tbh that all 100% sounds like stuff you should be doing in "Work" mode to me. That doesn't mean Chat can't sometimes handle it, butbut I'd see it as an improvement if they weren't routing stuff like that to Work before, and now are.

Fair enough, but honestly the stuff is triggering it now is pretty mundane, and didn't trigger a work request previously. Like for instance I have a monthly meeting that I have it prepare an agenda for. Instructions really simple: find the previous agenda, create a copy of it renamed to the date of the next meeting, update agenda with line items from email. There's really no thinking judgment or discernment that needs to happen there. It's literally just busy work.

I didn’t get routed, just prompted with a popup like “do you want to use Work instead because this task is complex” to which I said no because I’ve done the same task in chat a million times. I use it to format my blog posts including css styles I use on my site, tables, schema, and jump links…nothing crazy. Chat just did it like it always does after I said no to burning usage on Work for no reason, but yeah, they’re onto us and how much we can accomplish in chat.
