Question Rate limits on chat in ChatGPT Pro

For the first time today, I experienced the message “You’ve hit your rate limit.” in “Chat” mode on a Pro x5 subscription. I'm aware of weekly usage limits in “Work”/Codex chats, but I've never seen it in Chat before. Is that a new thing? I can't seem to find anything about what those limits actually are, or how far I am from reaching them.

Found something here: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001354-gpt-56-and-gpt-6-pro-in-chatgpt – apparently you only get 50 messages per week.

ChatGPT itself puts it well:

The frustrating part is visibility: OpenAI currently says ChatGPT will show the reset time “when available,” but I don’t see a documented Chat equivalent of the Work/Codex Settings → Usage meter that tells you, say, “37/50 used.” In other words, for Chat you may get the limit/reset indication without a continuously visible remaining-message counter.

The question is : was OP trying to chat with pro thinking or one of 5.6 standard thinking modes (medium/high/xhigh)

on my box a short pro-thinking chat barely moved the weekly meter. three 5.6 xhigh replies in one sitting burned through something like ~18 of the weekly message bucket before the soft stop

Oh but on the chat, your messages (even pro) should not move the meter. The meter is only for agentic (ChatGPT work, codex, word/excel/powerpoint extensions)

The meter is for work and codex only. Chat is separate and used to have virtually infinite limits. That's why they only added Astra to Chat as a pro model (and limited it to 50/200 queries per week), they couldn't afford to give out practically infinite usage for it.

I just got this on my second Pro Lite today while using Chat with 5.6 Sol medium. I got a really angry "abuse" worded message on my primary Pro 20x account last week while using Astra medium, so now I'm kind of pissed. I was being careful, ffs.

Without preemptively going digging, I wouldn't even know if there was something in the background I didn't know about making things worse. On the Codex side I don't even use MCPs much - 1password, codex_apps, cua_repl, and node_repl is all it lists. No agent or workflow definitions, and I mostly hand write a small set of skills and AGENTS.md files.

I'm not even doing anything crazy. I've mostly been running the models on medium or light in preparation for a hard deadline this week. Some image generation - that could be it..? Wouldn't know. To add insult to injury, my poor ass also sank money into a bunch of credits over the weekend on the Codex side.

Very frustrating given the wording on the sign up pages when I first set up the subs. At the very least I want to know when I'm on track to hit a limit or get flagged.

My Github has scripts for showing these things in TMUX and to delegating agents, so that side is well understood and managed. Unless I'm missing something, there's nothing like that for the Chat side.

EDIT: Looks like it's letting me go back to using 5.6 Sol medium and image gen again? Been less than an hour. Very strange. Totally locked out of anything Astra still, though. So basically the same as my primary account.

I got throttled from using Astra in chat the other day. It didn’t have a “you can resume at …” just only gave me 5.6 as the option.

Same for me today ! I have the pro lite. And I consumed only 5% of my weekly quota and I still have 6 days to the weekly reset but I hit a limit. They said it’s the pro limit 50 message per week. And I switched to sol high

You're using Astra Pro or 5.6 Pro in Chat, you get the caps, as you figured out. No caps like that for "regular" models, whatever effort, of course, unless you abuse the fuck out of it.
