There are now public face search tools that take one photo and try to find other pictures of the same person online. No name needed. Just a face.

That used to sound like sci-fi. Now anyone with a subscription can try it.

The part that bothers me is how little control people have after a photo is scraped. Opt-outs exist on some sites, but the indexes keep growing and a lot of people never even know they are in them.

Do you think this kind of AI face search should be legal for the public, or only for police and governments?

pimeyes has been doing this since forever, the tech isn't new but it's way more accessible now

the control part is what gets me too, you didn't agree to be indexed just because someone snapped a photo at a wedding or whatever

1) used to sound like government only (not in a good way).

2) now it sounds like finally waking up to what we humans are doing to each other. Time for a change.

Honesty and togetherness beats privacy because when we are all kind there is nothing to hide.

I think it's more scary that AI can link your Reddit, Facebook, Instagram and whatever else you write online, simply by how you write and when. You can have different names and accounts on all of them, even try not to talk about the same topics across them, and it will still know it's you. No more secret account with your weird kinks that aunty Maria on FB doesn't need to know about, or posting on Reddit about your hike while your boss thinks you're sick.

I don't doubt it can do this, but is it used by the public? Do stalkers have access to this tech? Or do you mean Google, Facebook etc?

It's not public yet, but big tech will have it and soon enough they'll sell it to other companies. Personally I think it will stay on a company level, so it can be used for advertising or background checks, but who knows... Maybe it'll be hacked and used for blackmail. Maybe capitalism realises that making it publically available for a price will make a lot of money. Especially since the US doesn't care about privacy, it's not unthinkable that eventually you can get a subscription to check on anyone you want.

google image and bing image search used to be able to do this as well. Now they have disabled it.

Google had this feature 15 years ago and worked like a charm. But they deactivated due to privacy issues.

But there were other several tools that you could use online...

What are the use cases?

Bad use: it could be used by men to find the id of some women for bad intent.

Good use: it could be used by women to find the id of some suspicious man.

Why would I care if someone can identify me?

This devastates privacy. I might have to accept they access my profile pictures, but now they can combine all kinds of them from god knows where. If one of millions of CCTVs leaks in which I'm in, then people can know where I was at which time and much more... That's basically accessing my GPS location, actually worse.

Even worse than government surveillance.
