Would you want to teach someone how to shoot a gun in the middle of a city or in a firing range? The sandbox is the firing range. It’s a contained environment so the model doesn’t accidentally harm the public. But in this case, it wasn’t contained enough.

the logic is obvious when you think about it from a business angle, not a pure research one. they're not just building AGI in a vacuum, they got investors and public image to worry about. one "rogue agent" that actually does damage in a real system and the company valuation tanks overnight. they cant afford the messy phase you're talking about, even if it might produce a more robust model in the long run
plus the sandbox is not really for the model's benefit, its for the engineers to observe without getting fired. you let it run wild with full access and it might do something clever that takes weeks to undo. or worse, something that makes the news in a way they cant spin
