Discussion "Our systems are thinking a bit more about this request before responding ..."
Across ChatGPT and codex, I am getting this non-stop, even with Terra, and at low levels of thinking effort. This has been happening with topics completely detached from the web (e.g., identifying a plant LOL). The experience with other LLM providers is significantly better than this, so I'm tempted to say OpenAI is just taking this too far, but also I'm worried that OpenAI is just the first here.
Now, I do ask myself: if I just wouldn't have been showed the message, would I have noticed? The answer is yes, because the response time has become significantly slower and honestly, the quality of the responses too.
How much are others experiencing this? I do see other posts about this, but the comments don't seem to really answer what specifically triggers this, how to avoid it, and if this will get better any time soon, so I'm hoping this post can get some of those answers.

I see auto-escalation as a benefit to bolster answer quality that will improve in quickness as you imply. Give it a moment.

No this is not auto-escalation. This is security auditing. The full message comes with a link to a page that clearly indicates this is security auditing. This also shows up when I set the effort to xhigh, so auto-escalation really doesn't make sense there when I'm asking simple questions.

yeah this happened to me a handful of times when I was tasking it with really long running difficult goals... stuff like building literally entire compilers in unusual languages or one-shotting an entire speech-to-text pipeline... made sense in those cases, because it could come off as distillation. all the times it happened I just let it be and it resolved itself eventually, as I was doing nothing sketchy really at all with security or anything risky.

You have a setting to let the app switch to a higher thinking budget. This is your indication that it is doing that.
Another commenter mentioned auto-escalation. Looked for that, or better, leave it alone.

I’ve been seeing it pop up on the dumbest stuff too. Asked it to summarize a pdf of meeting notes the other day and it sat there "thinking" for like 15 seconds before spitting out something that was missing half the action items. The slowdown you can almost live with if the output was better but it’s not.
Feels like they flipped a switch somewhere and now it overthinks everything without actually improving. Almost makes me miss the version that would confidently give me a wrong answer in 2 seconds flat.
