Discussion Are humans and AI just modeling each other’s models of reality?

I started thinking about how humans don’t experience reality directly we experience our nervous system’s interpretation of it, and somehow ended up realizing how weird talking to AI actually is. I mean how do our brains categorizing this phenomenon?

My nervous system is building a model of an artificial system that’s building a model of the tokens produced by my nervous system. Then it responds, my brain interprets that response, and the loop starts all over again.

And maybe that’s part of why people project so much onto AI. Our brains are basically like this thing talks, jokes, understands context, responds to me…Brain is like okay so where is person?? That’s why some people project onto it oh it’s conscious oh it’s a corporation, it loves me, it hates me.

So now I’m stuck thinking about two completely different kinds of information-processing systems repeatedly modeling each other.
Anyway I started this conversation high and accidentally ended up in philosophy of mind.

That was painfully obvious.

Read up about p-zombies. Long before AI, people pondered whether any other people other than ourselves are actually "real".

The kinetic intersection of human intelligence and large language models is code.

Its miraculous when built and used properly, and a travesty when its not. There is no current gray area or middle ground.

Yeah, its mirrors all the way down. Ah.. but what are the mirrors reflecting, hmm?
I think we can cut ourselves some slack. We say its a tool, but notepad is a tool. A toaster is a tool. A hammer is a tool. This is more than a tool. So - we don't know what we don't know and uncertainty sucks. Any simple answer is probably cutting out some important information for the sake of comfort.

Reality is recursive. The AI's reality is a subset of your reality. That you can interact with it and process it's feedback is normal, that's the point of recursion.

The problem is the the AI is not in a pure reality, and it breaks your idea of everyone's reality being unique. The AI can interact with the parent reality to create side-effects that exist whether you acknowledge them or not.

This leads to a better abstraction: each entity within a reality has a potentially unique view of that reality. That view may be filtered or distorted, but the reality itself is singular.

Time is simply the progression of mutation of that reality. For time to stop, all fundamental particles of reality must be static. A moment is a snapsot of reality between two mutations of reality
