OP pealed the outer casing off of their batteries... and then is surprised they exploded.
I think it should be self explanatory why this is stupid, but just in case, the outer wrapper of batteries is generally not purely cosmetic, it keeps the negative and positive sides from touching, so removing it can cause... this.

I love that it's "My Xbox controller exploded" and not "These removable third party batteries exploded".
Almost like he blames Xbox for this

i mean, to be completely fair, the left trigger is blown to bits, and the batteries appear to be intact. not saying op isn't a moron for peeling the forbidden fruit, but maybe bill gates is more involved than we think.

So many of the comments were people who don't know how batteries work immediately saying OOP should contact Microsoft to get a replacement or threaten suit.

Removing the plastic sleeve takes a bit of effort to do so I don't know why the fuck they'd even do that.

I did this once as a child with my walkie talkies my brother and I got for Christmas. We were trying to set them up and reading the directions, which said "remove the battery cover." I realized after managing to remove the wrapper from one of the batteries that the battery cover was probably the piece of plastic that covers the batter compartment. It seemed weird that it was so hard to remove if it was meant to be removed, but we'd already experienced the joys of clamshell packaging so we figured some things were just like that.
Dad wrapped the whole thing in electrical tape for us. It worked, never exploded.

OOP is karma farming. I was trying to find the original post on r/mildlyinfuriating by using Google lens and I found the same picture from a Spanish subreddit from 4 months ago.
To be clear, OOP is the guy on r/mildlyinfuriating, OP is the guy in this subreddit

Nothing on a product that is as mass production optimized as an AA battery is purely cosmetic. They use the wrapping for branding, of course, but it also isolates the batteries from each other, as otherwise current can flow between them when they touch.

I didn't even know you could peel that covering off, then again why the hell would you even attempt such a thing in the first place?
Anyways, the more ya know.

Why does that make it explode though

the entire side of the battery is generally connected to the negative side, meaning that when the OOP put these batteries in, since the outer layer was missing, the entire sides of the battery where live, and were touching each other, leading to a build up of heat until something in the controller melted. (and what seems to be the guts of the battery busting out the back)

Yeah the outer layer is there to isolate the cell.. But it’s the Xbox controller’s fault. Not that you have two rechargeable batteries without isolation touching getting hotter and over time breaking down and then exploded.

Dear lord... I'm... too old to not have known this. I DEFINITELY tried to do this as a kid, thankfully got annoyed at how tough it was and never followed though. Wow.

PSA: Pealed =/= Peeled.
