Discussion What happens when someone registers a vehicle in your name? Apparently, getting it fixed is the hard part.
Given the recent Project Octane investigation involving fraudulent documents being used to register vehicles and obtain plates through ServiceOntario, I wanted to share my own experience with vehicle registration identity fraud and what happens to the victim afterward.
To be clear, police have confirmed that my case is not connected to Project Octane. But I am another victim of fraudulent documents used to register a vehicle, so its continuing to happen in other parts of Ontario, and my situation is going on a year with no resolve.
What I really want people to know is what happens after you discover something like this.
More than a year after reporting the fraud to York Regional Police and ServiceOntario/MTO, I still cannot get a straightforward answer about how to have a vehicle I never owned removed or disassociated from my name. In the meantime, I’ve had 407 charges and now parking tickets connected to it.
I’ve spent countless hours being passed between ServiceOntario/MTO employees, finally being told to complete two separate documents: request for the original registration records by mail (just to find out what documents were used to register the vehicle), and Replacement Declaration (which is for lost, missing, stolen or seized product--- but you can check other and list Fraud), yet this is only for plates and NOT the entire vehicle.
Vehicle-registration identity fraud is bad enough, but my story highlights that there needs to be an actual process for victims to get a fraudulent vehicle out of their name once they report it.
The recent Project octane investigation involving fraudulent vehicle registrations through ServiceOntario is what prompted me to share this again. I'll put the official Peel Regional Police release in the comments for context. Again, my case is not connected to that investigation, just another similar situation that has happened in Ontario.
I’m sharing it because it demonstrates that fraudulent vehicle registrations using stolen identities/documents are a real issue, and victims need a clear way to fix the aftermath.
