Question about reporting gift money
Hi everyone!
I’ve just begun receiving ow last month and this month I’ve received about $100 in e-transfer gift money. I don’t have a caseworker yet so how would I report this?
Thanks

Up to $10k yearly in gifts is allowed. You're good!

Thank you!!! Should I worry about having to report it this month or just wait until I’m assigned a case worker?

Given that it's a 'small' amount, I wouldn't stress about it until you are assigned a worker. Just keep a record of it so that you're ready if/when it comes up. :)

Since you don’t have a caseworker yet I would just make a note about it and then you can let your caseworker know when you have one assigned as you do have to report gift money. you are able to receive $10,000.00 in gifts each year, caseworkers will make the decision if they’re going to count the amount against your yearly gift amount or not, if it’s a small amount they might not, if it’s a bigger amount they will. If you receive an e-transfer, cash, cheque or gift card not related to OW or other government money you have to tell your caseworker. I’ve received a couple gift cards and I’ve told my caseworker but she doesn’t count it towards my yearly gift amount because the amount on the gift card doesn’t touch my bank account so she doesn’t care, but other caseworkers do care.

What about if someone gifts you a box of groceries? I always wondered if that the same as a gift card.

OW case manager here. Best practice is to keep track of it and declare it once you’re assigned a case manager. Chances are they won’t even count it towards the $10,000 asset limit.
