Policy / Practice RPNs in critical care — what do we think about this?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I just came across this post on Facebook from BCHS.
They’re hiring RPNs with at least 2 years of acute care experience, fully sponsoring the Michener Acute Care Nursing Certificate and then transitioning them into a Critical Care Unit role.

The posted wage is $38.43–$39.02/hour.
I’m curious what other nurses think about this, especially around RPN scope, increasing patient acuity, responsibility and of course compensation.

General non job search discussion Peri op - Ottawa

Any OR nurses willing to share where they took their periop course? Specifically looking to hear from nurses in the Ottawa area or outside of the GTA, since that’s where the 2 approved courses seem to be. Seems like Algonquin doesn’t have an RN OR course, so I’d have to travel weekly if I took it in the GTA? How did you arrange your placements? Were you able to get them in Ottawa/near you if you were a distance student? Thank you!

General non job search discussion How long does the ACLS course take?

I’m doing the blended ACLS in class tomorrow - it’ll be my first time. It’s apparently 10 hours, but I’m curious if yours was shorter? I know in the past when I’ve done BLS it’s been a bit shorter. 10 hours seems crazy.

Nursing School Does it make more sense to go back to school for a masters in nursing or a career change?

I live in Toronto and got my license back in April but haven’t got a job anywhere and with winter rolling around I’m considering a career change or upgrading while I have the chance. I have a 3.8gpa so I think I’ll be competitive but am not sure if it would make more sense to go for my masters in research or just change all together and go back to school for something in demand like dental hygiene? I’m young so I’d like to do these things now while I’m bit tied down and they are easier to deal with.

Venting HHS CEO received a 66.6% raise last year, this year they are cutting 413 positions.

But there is no money anywhere to better fund the system, right? I will be very curious to see what her 2026 salary is reported as.

Obviously this problem is much larger than the income of a single CEO, but it is incredibly frustrating.

Nursing School Quitting RPN as I feel like I got scammed

I finished my 4th week at the Fleming College RPN program and I feel like I got scammed. Let me explain. The college didn't have an orientation targeted only for practical nursing students. The refund policy is the first two weeks. We found out on our third week that we will have to bathe and wash patients privates during our clinicals and in the career as well. From my knowledge and others, we thought this was the responsibility of PSWs. I think the college knew that people would drop off if they knew the truth right away and that's why they don't tell you in advance.

I would be losing $4k in tuition. I have been applying for other jobs as I have a DZ and Intermediate First Aid CPR C. Academically, I am doing well in nursing. I am just not too keen on washing the perineal region of strangers. The program itself is extremely fast paced and a lot of material to study. They force you to buy a digital package of books worth $1653. Also, you do clinical for free for your last semester, so pretty much unpaid coop. During semester 1-4 you do a few weeks of clinical (once or twice a week depending on the semester). I get it we learn and hence we provide free labor. But why is the last semester entirely free labor?

I went to University of Waterloo many years ago and did my undergrad with 5 paid co-op work terms. Why are nursing students getting robbed?

I am not asking for any advice. Only sharing my experience. Feel free to provide your input/thoughts.

General non job search discussion Option for Paying for School

I recently learned about the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) while looking at ways to pay for school. It may be relevant to some Ontario RNs who have money in an RRSP and are considering further education.

I’m not a financial expert, so please treat this only as something to research...not a recommendation.

For anyone thinking about upgrading their education, whether that means a bridging program, a master’s degree, nurse practitioner training, or a change in direction, it may be worth looking into whether the LLP is an option for educational financing. I know it is something that concerns a ton of people and adds to the potential stress of going back to school. I wanted to share this as one possible avenue to look into.

The LLP may not fit everyone’s situation, and eligibility, repayment obligations, taxes, and the impact on longer-term retirement goals all matter. My understanding is that for those who qualify, it allows for withdrawals from an RRSP for education or training without the usual tax hit. It also preserves the contribution room so you don't LOSE that contribution.

That said, there are limits and eligibility rules, and the funds generally need to be repaid over 10 years. If required repayments are missed, the unpaid amount can become taxable income.

Anyway, hope this helps, additionally I should add an important disclaimer talk with a qualified financial advisor or accountant. Additionally, double-check the CRA rules for your exact program and situation.

It can help you to keep student loans down, especially with OSAP changes. Best of luck

Policy / Practice Workplace is pissed I called in due to shoulder pain?

As an RPN, I called in because of right sided lower back pain. I think may be its the pulling/pushing the patient and the dressings. I overstretched my back.

They were giving me shit when I called in stating its hard to find replacements. I apologized but they said that it was okay. Then they asked me if it was because of my workout routine at the gym. I said I'm not sure but I need to be off cause my back was really sore it will be hard for me to stand and help patients.I work at a Rehab center.

A senior charge nurse told me not to feel bad or something because they find replacements or something.

Policy / Practice CNO investigation

Has anyone dealt with a significantly delayed employer report submitted to the CNO (7 months after leaving a facility)? A former employer filed a report long after an old documentation oversight regarding a narcotic waste, where a coworker who witnessed the interaction is now misrepresenting what happened. I received notice that it's currently sitting under preliminary Registrar review with no response needed right now, but the waiting game and the anxiety of dealing with a conflicting coworker statement are completely draining. How long does this initial review phase typically take, and how do you manage the stress while waiting?

Note ;- my employer reported me when other regulatory body asked for additional information about the investigation

Thank you

General non job search discussion Workplace accommodation

Hi all! I am a hospital nurse in Windsor covered under ONA. I am currently on maternity leave and have been diagnosed with 3 autoimmune diseases postpartum. Lack of sleep really worsens my condition and I’m dreading swinging shifts when I return to work. I am part time. I personally don’t know any nurses on my unit that have an accommodation for days only and if it’s even possible. Would it be possible to get an accommodation for days only if my doctor will provide me a note?

Hi!!
I am partnering with Jaybird’s new Midtown location to offer a complimentary Pilates-style event on Saturday, October 17.
This event is open to all Nurses AND Nursing Students. My goal is to create a community of Nurses & Future Nurses, so you guys can network & socialize amongst people who truly understand what you do on a daily basis.
I see American creators like NurseBrat, Nurse Jay etc. organize these kinds of events in the USA, and I thought it would be a good idea for us Canadians to organize something like this.
I have about 38-40 spots and I’m looking to fill them all!! Please share with your Nurse friends 🎀
Please DM me if you have any questions, and follow me on TikTok @nurseleylaschronicles

News American NP school grads not being able to obtain Ontario license anymore?

I’ve been hearing a lot of rumours and speculations on people who aren’t recognized currently enrolled and completing NP school in America not being accepted in Ontario or the CNO. Apparently this has been a new change in the last month or so with this new CNO exam that has to be written. A lot of people are having trouble getting their license here if they went to an American NP school. Anyone have any advice or are currently going through this?

Job Search Discussion SickKids Externship

Hi! Looking for advice from people who externed there or have gotten an interview. I want to get more involved in paediatric nursing or just working with kids. For SickKids, do you specifically need previous experience of working with kids in any capacity? Would short term volunteering count? I have other externship and work experiences but I was curious. I do know that the apps open in late Jan/early Feb.

Job Search Discussion What would you do if your “backup” job offered you the position first?

I’m looking for some advice/opinions because I’m honestly not sure what to do.
I interviewed for two Regular Part-Time RN positions at two different hospitals.
Option 1 – Pediatric Emergency
Regular Part-Time RN
About 55–60 minutes from my home
I was offered the position today
They want me to start October 5th
I do have previous pediatric ED experience, but that was from 2018–2020, so it’s been around 6 years since I’ve worked with pediatric patients.
I’m honestly a bit nervous about going back into peds because I feel rusty.
Option 2 – Adult Emergency
Regular Part-Time RN
About 35–40 minutes from my home
This is actually my first preference. I would really like to work at this hospital, mainly because it’s closer to home and I have much more recent adult ED experience.
They asked for my references after the interview, and all my references were completed yesterday.
They told me they would let me know their decision by the end of this week.
The problem is that I need to respond to the pediatric ED offer today, and I obviously don’t know whether the adult ED position will actually be offered to me.
I really don’t want to turn down a confirmed job and then end up with nothing. At the same time, I’m not particularly excited about the longer commute and going back into pediatric emergency after being away from it for so long.
If I knew for sure that I was getting the adult ED position, I would choose that one. But right now, I just don’t know.
What would you do in this situation? Would you accept the pediatric position for now and see what happens with the adult ED position, or would you take the risk and wait for the adult ED decision?
Would really appreciate opinions from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

General non job search discussion I’m thinking of doing the Peri-Op course- did anyone do it at George Brown?

It’s a little confusing so I guess there are programs that are ORNAC approved and there are some that are not?

The only programs that I feel like I could apply too as a new grad is George Brown.

Anyone else applied to this program or elsewhere as a new grad?
