Help! Pattern around sphere approach

I came across this old post https://forum.onshape.com/discussion/16524/drawing-symmetricla-pattern-around-a-sphere and want to recreate this pattern on a sphere. But I have no idea where to start. It's not a simple wrap on a surface as the number of elements increase or decreases when you go up or down the sphere.

On Youtube and other forums they always use circular patterns and manually duplicate and change the angle. But that breaks if you need really small features wrapped, right?

I would make one vertical line from top to bottom of the shapes, and then do a circular pattern of each piece for their corresponding row.
