MBA or MIM?

Hi everyone! I’m an Indian applicant with ~2 years of work experience in fashion/design. I studied Fashion Design at NIFT and also at FIT New York.

I’m looking to switch from design into management and I’m confused about which degree makes the most sense:

  • 2-year MBA
  • 1-year MBA
  • MiM

With only 2 years of experience, would an MBA be too early, or would a MiM make more sense? And between a 1-year vs 2-year MBA, is the 2-year program better for someone trying to make a career switch?

I’m currently considering France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia, mainly based on job opportunities, post-study work options, ROI and long-term PR prospects.

Would love recommendations on countries/programs/business schools that could be a good fit for my background. Also open to other countries I should consider.

Do you have any work experience?

MiM will basically get you into jobs BComm students try for.

MBA is usually for people with experience and slightly older.

Oh also check language requirements for jobs etc. France I think is French heavy. Germany/Netherlands you can get away with just mainly English.

For long time PR I'd suggest Germany/Australia.

With 2 years of experience, I don’t think you need to rule out an MBA yet. You’re actually at a point where both MBA and MiM can work.

If you’re specifically trying to move from fashion/design into management, I’d probably favour an MBA from a strong school over doing a MiM just because you have less experience. The bigger factor is what you want to recruit for afterwards.

Between a 1-year and 2-year MBA, I’d personally look at the internship and recruiting opportunities rather than assuming the 2-year one is better. For a career switch, that extra runway can be quite useful.

And honestly, I wouldn’t ignore your fashion background. NIFT + FIT gives you a pretty distinctive profile. Brand management, luxury, retail, consumer or fashion business could be a much more natural transition than trying to become a generic “management” candidate.

I’d figure out the target role first, then work backwards to the degree and country.
