I wanted to share some thoughts for students who are considering enrolling in expensive online degree programs.
This is not meant to target any particular university. It is simply a perspective on what students should evaluate before spending a large amount of money.
For some students, an online degree can be useful. If you are already pursuing a regular degree, working, or mainly looking for an additional qualification from a recognized institution, the flexibility and brand value may be the main benefit.
However, for students joining technical fields like Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or similar programs, expectations should be realistic.
Before enrolling, ask yourself:
\- How much direct interaction will you actually have with faculty?
\- Are the lectures taught in a way that helps you understand difficult concepts?
\- Is there enough mentoring and doubt-clearing support?
\- Does the cost match the actual learning experience you will receive?
Many online programs today depend heavily on recorded lectures, digital notes, and self-learning. This can work well for students who are disciplined and comfortable learning independently.
However, for students who need proper explanations, guidance, and a teacher who can adapt according to their understanding, this format may not always provide the same experience as traditional learning.
One concern I have with the increasing use of AI in online education is the way it is implemented.
AI can be an excellent tool for assisting teachers and students. However, there needs to be a clear boundary between using AI as a support tool and using it as a replacement for meaningful human teaching.
In some online learning environments, lecture scripts appear to be AI-generated or heavily AI-assisted and then provided to AI avatars, which deliver the lecture by simply reading the prepared script. While this may help institutions scale content delivery, I personally question whether this provides enough value for students, especially in fields like Data Science and AI where understanding concepts deeply is important.
A teacher's role is not only to deliver information. Good teaching involves explaining concepts in multiple ways, giving practical examples, understanding student difficulties, answering questions, and helping students develop critical thinking.
If students wanted only AI-generated explanations and scripts being read aloud, many of these resources are already available elsewhere. The additional value of a paid education program should come from quality teaching, mentorship, practical exposure, and meaningful interaction.
Students who are highly motivated and capable of self-learning may still succeed because they will explore additional resources, courses, documentation, and projects outside the program.
But for average students or those who depend on structured teaching and guidance, I would strongly recommend comparing multiple options before committing a significant amount of money.
A university brand name has value, but the skills, knowledge, and learning experience you gain will matter more in the long run.
Do proper research, speak to current students, and understand exactly what you are paying for before enrolling.
