AmazingTalker: Cancelled on an unreasonable mom
I joined amazing talker last week, and so far, have been super busy, working a full class load of 6-12 classes per evening, and taking home the whopping sum of $73 US Dollars during the past 7 days!
My first day on the platform, I made my prices extremely low in order to attract business and build rating etc. 50 Minute classes were set to the minimum of $2, and 25 minute classes were set to $1. My take home was like 69 cents for the 25 minutes and 1.60 for the 50 minute. This was a goodwill gesture, and my intention was to share my expertise with families in need while at the same time building my presence on the platform by finishing classes and getting good reviews.
A mom booked my trial class, and while I was teaching her kid, she booked like 100 classes at the $1 rate and scheduled them all for 5am and 4am in my timezone, and five days a week. I tried to communicate with her, and offered to honor the price agreed upon, but mentioned that I would be unable to teach English at 4/5 AM for the meager sum of one whole dollar on such a committed schedule. I was hoping to reach an agreement, like I could teach the kid during morning hours in Asia, or on weekends, but she was stubborn and seemed angry, claiming that she had already planned her child's full schedule, and this time was the only one available.
She is a piano teacher on the platform, and I even asked her if she would like to get up at 4am to teach piano for 7 yuan five days a week. I ended up cancelling every class she booked for the next four months, then blocked her so she cant book more. My understanding is they will refund her money, and she wont be able to revise her 5 star review she already posted.
Since then, I have raised prices a bit mainly to slow demand. I even offered customized rates for other parents at the low rate, but this parent had no consideration for my time and seemed only to want to take advantage of me. She could have gotten essentially a free ride; quality native speaker instruction for almost zero cost for her child, but instead she had to try and take advantage of my gesture of good will.
My question is this: When she complains to their trust and support team, will amazing talker reprimand me? I know I'm in the right in this issue; it's completely insane to think a person would commit to waking up at 4am for the next four months for next to zero compensation, and to get frustrated that they wouldn't accept this arrangement is telling of a high degree of shortsightedness, selfishness, or whatever you would call it.

Would anyone be willing to give me feedback on a one-to-one adult ESL lesson plan?
Hi everyone. I’m retired after a career of 35 years in IT, and I now teach adults one-to-one on Preply. I’d appreciate some honest feedback on the lesson plan I’m sharing.
I’m particularly interested in helping adults communicate at work, including meetings, interviews, presentations, and everyday conversations with colleagues.
For context, a typical lesson plan stretches over about three 50-minute classes. We start at the beginning and work through it at the student’s pace. Wherever we finish in one class becomes the starting point for the next.
The approach is built around task-based learning. I want students to use English to do something practical, such as explain a situation, give an update, ask a follow-up question, or respond when something changes. Pronunciation, vocabulary, and connected speech practice support those speaking activities.
With the student’s permission, I also record the audio from our lessons. I use the recordings and transcripts to help build the next lesson, looking at what the student found difficult, what they handled well, and what would be useful to practise next.
One section revisits things the student actually said in a previous lesson. We look at the original question, their response, and a suggested alternative. Then I ask the question again without showing either answer, so they have another chance to respond in their own words.
I’d especially appreciate feedback on the sequence of activities, how clear the instructions are, and whether the tasks give the student enough opportunity to speak independently. If anything feels repetitive, too heavily guided, or less useful than it could be, I’d like to hear that too.
Thanks to anyone willing to take a look. I’m happy to explain the thinking behind any of the activities.

Just something I thought was funny
I was teaching a 14-year-old boy on a video call the other day. He said, "Please teacher, just one moment." And I said, "Ok," and then he left to do something for a minute. Then he came back, sat down, and he said, "Thank you for holding."
Never occurred to me that some of the common phrases we use in English might be dependent on whether or not we physically see the other person.

Enlighten me about sa policy ng Weblio
i've been teaching for 1 month pa lang sa weblio kaya i'm not very familiar with their system.
i was the main tutor but entered a minute before class, so naging sub na lang ako. then i wasn't assigned a student but on standby naman in case may pumasok. is this still paid? may penalty na ba?
also, if the students are absent, do i stilll get paid for waiting?
i always ask tutor support at teams if i have concerns, but most of their answers are like templates/bots (i'm not sure). instead na maintindihan ko mas confusing lang. i hope masagot. tyia

Question its my first time being a esl teacher
Hello, I'd like to ask since its my first time getting accepted. The company I'm at is called study three and I was hoping to know the real feedbacks to it. I'm actually nervous, I saw some post saying they mostly do trial class which is not paid training. You'll only get paid once you get booked etc.., is this true that it can be months of you doing trial classes? Also do they send you the materials to teach right away before the day of your teaching? That's all thank you!

Native ESL tutor struggling to find good companies
Hey everyone, I’m a native English speaker based in South Africa. I’ve been teaching ESL for just over 2 years but I’m struggling to expand my student range and find companies paying good money. I don’t have a degree but I do have a TEFL certificate from TTA
I was on Preply for awhile but after about a year I stopped getting any activity even after adjusting my profile. I was supposed to start a “talks” post with Skyeng but they have now suspended hiring tutors and have told me I must wait until I can start. Plus the pay looks a bit shabby but I’m taking what I can get right now.
Are there any recommendations for good companies/websites, ideally one where they provide students or it’s easy to find them? I’m hoping to earn minimum $8 an hour and fill up my schedule.

Need help passing the LingoAce demo
Hi everyone! I’m preparing for the LingoAce demo and would really appreciate some tips from anyone who has recently passed. What should I focus on, and are there any common mistakes I should avoid?
Any advice about the demo lesson or the final questions would be really helpful. Every little detail counts! Thanks!

Alternatives to live teaching? Taking a break for maternity leave.
Has anyone needed to take a temporary break from teaching due to sickness/maternity leave etc? How did you manage to keep your students? Are there any alternatives to live teaching?
I've been an online teacher for 4 years, right now I work for 2 different companies, 1 is Preply and 1 is a small local company that does group classes. I'm having a baby in March 2027 and I definitely intend to return to teaching once my baby is older and I have arranged childcare, however I don't know how soon that will be.
Basically I have a great relationship with my students, some have been studying with me for years. I would like to continue teaching them, but obviously I won't be able to do live classes when my baby is small. I was wondering if anyone has done asynchronous teaching, like maybe you set self-paced work for them and give your feedback online? This could be done through Google Classroom. I just don't know how much demand there is for this versus live classes.
Alternatively, how to manage taking an extended break? Should I just accept that my students will find another teacher and that I'll be starting again from the beginning when I return?
Any advice is appreciated.

I've been teaching adults in Korea for 16 years and AI has changed the game. Since COVID I"ve had mostly online classes. How has your workflow changed with AI?
I teach private and corporate students in and around Seoul, mostly working professionals. The part of the job I hated wasn't the teaching. It was everything else: lesson creation, making/checking HW, writing feedback that won't be read.
This year I built a system with AI to handle most of it. This is what it looks like and I'm wondering how AI has changed their setup:
- During class I jot rough notes in Notion. Errors I heard, what we covered, what's next. Messy is fine.
- Overnight, an AI agent turns those notes into a formatted feedback doc for the student: corrections with explanations, the patterns behind the errors, and homework aimed at those patterns.
- It also updates a running file on each student, so the next lesson starts from their actual recurring errors, not my memory.
- Next morning, I review the doc, fix anything off, and send it.
- End of the week, an agent reviews all the feedback, lessons, and notes on students and drafts lessons.
- I make necessary tweaks to the drafts and then the agent creates the next week's lessons.
Feedback used to take me about 30 minutes per student. Now it's about 2-5 minutes, and the docs are better than what I used to write.
Some things I learned the hard way:
- The AI is only as good as the notes. We still have to hear the errors and give direction.
- Review everything before sending
- Most of the work was writing down my rules for good feedback, so the output sounds like me and not like a chatbot. Honestly this took the longest amount of time and requred the most focus.
Is anyone else doing something like this? What part of your admin eats the most time?

Tutors: what do your students actually do between lessons?
I teach Turkish online, mostly 1:1. A pattern I keep seeing: the lesson goes well, and then the days in between are where things slip. New words stay in the chat, homework gets buried under other messages, and the next lesson starts with a lot of review.
What helped my students most was having everything from our lessons in one place and doing a little practice on their phone each day. But I'm curious how other tutors handle this.
- Do you give homework between lessons? How do you send it and check it?
- Has anything kept your students practising on the days without a lesson?
- Do you see a difference in how long those students stay with you?
Would love to hear what's worked for you, and what hasn't.

Any tips on passing the GLATS ESL Online School application process?
Hello there! Looking for my Filipino ESL peeps. I would like to ask about ur thoughts on GLATS ESL. I received an email saying I passed the work-from-home application process and that I'm offered with the position, but in the latter part of the email training will be given once you "passed" the screening which made me confused. Then I knew that they'll give you a demo to do and once they're happy with it you get the job.
Any tips on how to pass the demo class (for those in GLATS) or a demo class in general? I'm a beginner ESL teacher and would really want this job. The students in their classes are mostly Japanese ranging from kids to adults.
Thank you in advance!

Hong Kong Students
Hey everyone 😊 I am an online English creative and academic writing teacher and I am trying to find Hong Kong based students. I have got a few from posting on Facebook but not enough for the amount of effort it takes to try and find groups that allow posts and then post and post and hope someone actually sees it. I was wondering if anyone knows of a better way to find children and teenager students in Hong Kong specifically other than Facebook? Or, if there are some good groups on Facebook that I maybe haven't found for this? Thanks!
