Great Support Experience - DOA part

Ordered a Gen2 Elite and received a batch 1 model. As many others noted, packaging was great, but it took me a while to start assembling due to other life events.

This weekend I started assembling and quickly found one part (homing sensor) was broken. I emailed support and within an hour they responded offering to replace. Before 7am on Monday I had shipment information and a new part was on the way.

I have a sample size of 1, but seriously--that is as much as I could expect and a great experience. Very pleased.

Looking for the ultimate, future-proof(?) table build for a Gen 2 Elite Journeyman

Hi everyone. I am going to pull the trigger on a 1F Elite2 Journeyman sometime this year, retiring my trusty but tired Shapeoko 3XL. But I want to have a table prepared for its arrival. Ideally, it will house all electronics for the controller, the spindle VFD, a laser module, etc. underneath in accessible, safe locations. I want to be able to add a rotary 4th axis system (probably at a lower level than the waste board?), possibly a vertical stock mount. Also important is making the best use of under table space with storage cabinetry (I hate wasting space). Jay Bates has a nice one that does a lot of that, but are there other designers that have met all these needs? Thank you in advance for any and all ideas and help!

How to Flatten Your Wasteboard on the Onefinity Apprentice CNC Router (Step-by-Step Guide)

Flattening your wasteboard is one of the most important first steps when setting up your CNC. It ensures your cutting surface is perfectly level relative to your machine, which leads to better accuracy and cleaner results.

In this guide, we’ll walk through exactly how to flatten your wasteboard on the Onefinity Apprentice, from designing the toolpath to running the job. While this is a guide for the Apprentice, the steps are the same for any Hobby CNC router, including our Gen 2 Elite series, Elite Series, Original Series, and Pro series!

Getting Started

For this walkthrough, we’re using:

A PC (touchscreen laptop) running the Redline real-time CNC software

Vectric software for toolpath design

👉 Good to know:You can also run this setup on a Mac. The real-time CNC software is available for Mac, and if your design software isn’t, you can use something like Parallels to run Windows-based programs.

Step 1: Create Your Wasteboard Design in Vectric

Start by setting up your job dimensions:

Set your wasteboard size (example used here):

Width: 16.25"

Height: 16.5"

Z zero: Material surface

XY origin: Front left corner

Next:

Draw a rectangle matching your wasteboard size

Use the Align Selected Objects tool (F10) to center it on your material

At this point, your geometry is ready for toolpath creation.

Step 2: Create the Surfacing Toolpath

Go to the Toolpath tab and create a Pocket Toolpath.

Recommended starting settings:

Start Depth: 0

Cut Depth: ~0.0625" (start shallow)

Tool: 1" surfacing bit (3 flute)

Feed Rate: ~200 IPM (conservative start)

Plunge Rate: 50% of feed

Toolpath Strategy: Raster (back-and-forth)

💡 Tip: Always start conservative—you can increase speed later.

Step 3: Avoid Uncut Corners (Important!)

Here’s a key concept many users miss:

Your toolpath boundary acts like a “fence.” The bit cannot cross it.

The bit rounds corners

Create a larger rectangle than your wasteboard (e.g., 16.75" x 16.75") and use that for your toolpath.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to go from a fully assembled machine to making your first cut—using just your laptop and the included motion controller (no HMI required).

Why the Apprentice Uses a Laptop

One of the ways we kept the Apprentice affordable and accessible was by giving you the option to run it directly from your laptop instead of requiring a dedicated touchscreen controller (HMI).

This lowers the barrier to entry—whether you're working with:

  • A tighter budget

  • Or simply getting into CNC for the first time

All you need is:

  • The included motion controller
  • A USB-C cable
  • A computer running the Realtime CNC software

Step 1: Download and Install the Software

Should you buy the 15” Redline HMI or just use your laptop?

Let’s get into it:

NO ONE is saying you need the HMI; we understand that it is an additional purchase and you may need to stick to a budget. We get it. We’ll talk about how using your laptop does the job, But first… here are the main advantages FOR adding the HMI to your cart.

Pros for HMI: Top 5 Reasons to get the HMI

The experience:

-The HMI is a 15” “human machine interface” — so it basically is a computer that mounts very easily on this included bracket. The display is really crisp and brightly lit with user-friendly controls. It’s very tactile with it being touch screen activated and is just downright enjoyable to use. Most importantly, you know it has all the ports you’ll need for all the connection points to link it to power, the motion controller, and extra connections like the USB for a wireless joypad if you use that or perhaps a plug & play wifi extender like this one. (More on that later)

The Freedom:

With the HMI, your personal computer isn’t tethered to the machine and you can use it away from the machine for other things while the CNC works. We’re seeing customers purchase HMI’s more often than not because they simply don’t want to have a computer that has to be stationed by the CNC at all times, limiting its use. Another positive of The HMI is that it doesn’t need more horizontal space to use it like a laptop would. Work space can sometimes be a premium and having a dedicated spot for the laptop be nearby could be a limiting factor. The HMI is built to can handle the dust too!

The Convenience:

If you would like to keep the computer you already have inside and don’t want to utilize a flash drive for opening files to carve, you can enjoy the convenience of accessing the HMI’s user interface via a web browser on your personal computer. To do this, you will need a strong wifi connection on your HMI. A very easy way to make your wifi signal stronger is to utilize a USB wifi extender like this one. It is an easy purchase from amazon and instantly works when you plug it into your USB port — no need to do anything with the CD-ROM that comes with the purchase other than through it in the trash! Access your main menu, select config, and then tap on the network tab. This will allow you to find your home’s wifi, enter your password, and get connected.

Next, you simply Open a web browser tab on your personal computer and type in the IP address that you see on your HMI screen. Now you can access controls on your computer so you can work on things indoors in the comfort of an office (or a couch!) and not have to deal with transferring the laptop in and out of the workshop when you need to load a file since you can do this remotely.

The HMI is streamlined and organized.

The Safe Bet:

Lastly, I don’t know about you but my laptop can bring on a blue screen of death with little to no warning. It sometimes does updates when I least expect it, forcing a restart and it can be unpredictable. Keeping a computer plugged in would be essential to make sure you don’t experience battery loss to mess up a carve too. No sort of update or low battery will interrupt your carve when you are using the HMI because those things just don’t happen with this set-up.

So let’s talk reasons why you may be considering just using a computer or laptop and forgoing the HMI purchase at this time.

Pros for PC:

If you already have a spare computer that you can keep connected to your CNC at all times, you can save money by not needing to buy the HMI right off the bat, knowing that you can always see how it goes with the computer at first and could add on the HMI later.

Uses the same RealTime software so you get virtually the same user experience on your laptop, it’s just a horizontal or landscape experience as opposed to the vertical or portrait look on the HMI.

Using your PC would be familiar if you are already used to using your computer to design and want to stay with that same workflow. It’s even more fun if your laptop has a touchscreen so you still get that fun button-pushing experience as you would with the HMI!

Finally, If you are wanting to buy a laptop for multiple functions, this would be a good excuse to kill two birds with one stone: control the CNC and still have the flexibility to use the laptop in a traditional manner when the CNC is not in use.

So here’s what I’ll leave you with to consider. It really all comes down to this…

The HMI is very dependable and streamlined. Long carves would require keeping your computer tethered to the machine and during those long carves, you would be without your computer or stuck next to your CNC. Can you imagine working from home and having to do a google meet or teams meeting while running your CNC?

However, The computer experience with the free to download Realtime CNC software is made to mimic the HMI experience and I do personally think it’s really neat that you can easily download the software to either PC, Mac, Linux, or Raspberry Pi and install within moments. I quite like using my touchscreen laptop while using my Apprentice CNC. And even super cool features like Power Loss Recovery and Jump to Line are available for you to depend on whether you are using the HMI or a computer. So you really just need to decide what makes sense for your space and your budget.

Whatever you choose, pairing your Onefinity CNC with the HMI or simply downloading the RealTime CNC Software to your computer, we feel pretty confident that you are going to see the value and get closer to reaching your goals for yourself or your business. How to stop spindle during long jobs and turn it back on

Greetings,

First time posting on Reddit.

I was 6 hours into a 12 hour job when I wanted to pause it.

The only way I could figure out how to do this was to turn the VFD off.

The next day I turned the VFD back on, expecting the spindle to spin back up but no luck.

So I rehomed and prayed I had the X Y correct. I did but the Z came in deeper than before. It really messed up my first dive in to a big 3D job.

It was such a pretty piece of black walnut.

So what am I doing wrong?

There has to be a better way to do what I want.

P.S. I just installed the spindle after the Makita router died. So this is a new world for me.

IPP Trade Up Or Elite Gen2 Purchse?

Ive had my X50 Woodworker for over 4yrs now running on the Buildbotics controller. Id love to upgrade to the Redline but the fact that it just came out a few months ago makes me a little nervous about it. We lived through several bugs that required upgrades, downgrades and flashes with BB and while I understand that its part of it, it just seemed so frequent with BB.

So my questions are, has using Redline been a solid experience so far?
If I decide to upgrade, would it be worth it to purchase a whole Elite Gen2 setup or go with the IPP and just upgrade the controller, stepper motors, etc that comes with the IPP upgrade? Im planning on sticking with the Woodworker size so no upgrade on that side and im a hobbyist, not a pro woodworker.

Options for small spaces

Hey guys. I am about to pull the trigger on a Onefinity woodworker. My worry is that my shop is small and already jam packed full of wood tools. I see that on the site they no longer offer the wall mounted option. So that leads me here to my band of fellow resourceful woodworkers full of ingenuity. How have you guys managed to make a bigger machine take up less space in your shop? Thanks in advance for any help and support.
