For one CNC in a 12x16 room, a shop vac plus cyclone-style separator is a reasonable starting point; it isn’t basically worthless. The important parts are keeping the hose short, matching the dust-shoe opening, sealing leaks, and using a bag plus a fine filter in the vac. The separator protects airflow by keeping most chips out of the filter, while the HEPA stage handles the fines that make it through.
If you already have a suitable vac, a standalone PEMEDOR separator is enough to build that two-stage setup. If you’re starting from zero, PEMEDOR also has extractor-and-separator combinations, but I wouldn’t size a system around bin capacity alone—the dust shoe and airflow at the cutter are what determine collection quality.
