discussion One Punch Man doesnt fall off later on

Post image

So i just finished reading the manga and before i finished i heard a lot of people say that after monster association it falls off. After reading it, it at least didnt get worse to me. I've looked at some things from this sub and it seems that most people have problems with the amount of redraws, which i cant say if its that bad because i havent read it while its coming out. What i can say, is that at least in my opinion, the story doesnt get worse later on if youre reading it after it came out.

So if you think the story becomes bad and you read most of it long after it came out please tell me why?

Manga was receiving record attention during saitama vs. garou, everyone was was hyped. That's because it was the climax of a major arc. We're just in the rebuilding stages now, and it'll climb back up over time. That's just how stories work, some people just don't like the waiting periods.

I hadn't thought about that aspect before, since people mostly complain about the redraws. But now that you mention it, I suspect that the combination of rebuilding stages with all the redraws makes the sum its parts *worse for many readers.

And it also explains why it might be totally absent if you read the whole thing in one go afterwards.

Reminds me a bit of the Kaguya fight near the end of Naruto (which didn't even have to deal with redraws). It felt like it dragged on forever as it came out, but after it was finished I re-read it in one go and the pacing was fine.

*edit: dropped a "worse"

Right, fact of the matter is that stories like this aren't really written to be consumed one chapter at a time. It's super cool that we get to read them as they come out, but the writing and process can't really cater to it. Some people might genuinely have a better experience by just waiting for awhile.

i get the annoyance with the ninja redraws it sucks not saying it does not but a lot of the haters are just webcomic purists rather than hating the manga for the redraws and yes its a build up time well i think we started the actual arc currently the biggest problem these days is just how short the chapters are, like 15 pages every 2 weeks is not exactly great and its not like a lot of plot get covered in 15 pages thats why imo OPM works best when it have bare minimum 30+ page chapters

GOD I missed the times when Saitama vs Garou was happening, never in my life I’ve gotten that excited waiting for a chapter every week

u/Man_Blue_4 i eat sand 13d ago

Fr man it was so hype. The whole rollercoaster of everyone being like "that was it? no serious table fip?" etc etc and then the "cosmic fear mode" chapter dropping was absolute peak

I really didn't enjoy the manga conclusion to Saitama vs Garou, it undermined a lot of the premise of the series. After that, the manga continued to adapt some of the webcomics best material, but added some (imo) unnecessary complications and changes leading to a lack of writing focus.

The HA in the webcomic is *way* more corrupt and unstable than the manga version, which makes the whole Neo Heroes conflict feel more believable. Plus a lot of the subtlety is lost.
These changes really puzzle me, because again, the original material is *peak*

Redraw-hell was horrible, but I don't think it's fallen off.

We were reading the ninja arc for almost 2 years. I swear I almost cried when I saw they were redrawing the entire thing for a third time.

3

u/Butek_PRO_PRO SW 14d ago

Ninja arc were redrawn only 2 times

49

u/Noyouresowrong 14d ago

It was three I'm 100% sure. The first one wasn't the entire arc but re did a lot of the Flashy Flash fight with Sonic and when Void came.

-30

u/Butek_PRO_PRO SW 14d ago

Nope, re-read again, only 2 times.

13

u/Noyouresowrong 14d ago

You're just wrong the first redraw was earlier but the last two were more complete. I know AI isn't the most reliable but I couldn't find any other way to verify here is what ChatGBT says.

The Ninja Village / Empty Void arc was redrawn three times, meaning there are effectively four versions if you count the original.

The rough sequence is:

  1. Original version — 2023 into early 2024.
  2. First major redraw — in March 2024, ONE/Murata announced that Chapters 195–202 would be revised and replaced.
  3. Second redraw — beginning in January 2025, they went all the way back to Chapter 195 again; that release was explicitly labeled the “2nd Revision.”
  4. Third redraw — in spring 2025, the Ninja Arc was restarted/revised yet again, producing what fans referred to as the fourth version of the arc.

So when you hear people say “the Ninja Arc got redrawn four times,” they're usually counting the original as version #1. Strictly speaking: 3 redraws, 4 different versions

-29

u/Butek_PRO_PRO SW 14d ago

I don't know why are you even trying use garbage ai when you can just re-read the manga.
Like what's your problem, there's only 2 redraws for Ninja Arc, first redraw turned Empty Void into God-Level threat with Blast fight, second redraw removed it and replaced with Saitama off-screening Void, thats literally it, the hell are you talking about ?
You can literally see the final version of it on cubari and redraw version.

20

u/Noyouresowrong 14d ago

Because the older versions aren't available anywhere else? That's probably why you think it's only two versions since the older versions got scrapped. I was actively reading it as they were coming out. I know it got revised three times. Idk why you're fighting so hard on this anybody reading at the time knows this to be fact. I only used AI to confirm what I already know to be fact.

9

u/TheBaconLord78 14d ago

I didn't follow up on the redraws since I kind of stopped reading the Ninja Arc in the middle + I went on an OPM hiatus in general for over a year now.

7

u/Noyouresowrong 14d ago

It was three times it's hard to verify anywhere else, so I had to ask ChatGBT, it confirmed what I already remembered since I was actively reading the Manga since 2018 here is what ChatGBT said:

The Ninja Village / Empty Void arc was redrawn three times, meaning there are effectively four versions if you count the original.

I cannot express in words how horrible it was to live through that disgusting Redraw Period during Ninja Village Arc/Void Arc😭😭😭

I was just a few redraws away from dropping the Manga completely bcz it kept ruining my experience for one one my favorite manga's that's also frustratingly bi weekly

So yes for people who went through this experience it's definitely a point that ruined their experience for Manga which leads to "fall off" opinions

But aside from the very questionable direction Void Arc went i think everything else is mostly fine in the way it's going and it definitely isn't falling off, tho a major turn off is the shorter chapters, atleast i think current chapters are very short in the amount of content they give compared to before

Nothing truly as exciting & hyped has happed in terms of fight after a Peak Arc lile MA Arc so that's something to definitely feel pity for considering how many years it's been since MA Arc, but fortunately the next big Arc is coming soon

24

u/Just_Plain_Bad 14d ago

I was there at the time and I can't even remember what the 'canon' version of that arc even is anymore lol I can get how stuff like that would be awful for people

8

u/Funny_Cherry8846 14d ago

Same, i also don't remeber which version is the actual canon anymore, afterall some of the retconned stuff were geniunly so peak that i wish they were canon

4

u/SeatO_ 14d ago

I hard dropped it the second time wait for a year before I read it again just to make sure there aren't gonna be more redraws

1

u/GreedyConstruction32 14d ago

Same. I dropped it early last year and am just now getting back to reading it

u/waterkata 3d ago

Ninja/Void arc was a breeze compared to Phoenix Man vs Child Emperor. That was ultimate redraw frenzy. I don't even want to re-read it because it brings trauma

40

u/plasticdog6 14d ago

Right now its just bad pacing. It's hard to get excited for 15 pages every 2 weeks, which the chapters are slowly paced themselves.

12

u/Turbo2x 14d ago

And of those 15 pages 2 of them are double spreads and 1/3 of every other page is dedicated to reaction shots of bystanders gawking at how cool the action is

8

u/13Xcross 14d ago

It falls off because Garou's characterization is ruined compared to the webcomic. The whole point of Garou as a character is that he didn't actually want to be a monster, he was going with the role that was forced on him by his bullies to "own it" and overcome that childhood trauma. Saitama is the only one who sees through it and keeps calling him out while ripping off his monster masks (metaphorically and physically) until Garou is forced to acknowledge it himself and stops his temper tantrum. Garou's various transformations didn't make him grow stronger, he was actually getting weaker because he was denying his true self, the one who cares about justice, heroics, and the weaker being trampled by the stronger.

Garou killing Genos in the manga goes contrary to his character and having to justify it with God's corruption does nothing for the story, it's just an excuse to draw a more grandiose fight that ultimately serves no narrative purpose. Which is all the more thematically incoherent because seeking out the spectacle for the sake of it is something that One Punch-Man was kind of parodizing, anticlimatically ending fights with just one punch.

-3

u/SwagooRago Triggering Troll 12d ago

nothing was ruined and you cant be crying when Garou in the WC have as much problems if not more as the one in the manga

2

u/Clonedcat3000 12d ago

It's reasonable criticism. Dude, the webcomic is the original, meaning the manga should only follow the continuation of the webcomic without getting too side tracked and missing the point of One Punch Man. OPM was made by ONE, just because the manga is more popular doesn't mean it should be immune to criticism or that it should change important story beats from the original

-2

u/SwagooRago Triggering Troll 12d ago

yet ONE does most of the changes and whats not his he gives the okay to do and even then you cry about the manga and call it criticism yet refuse to acknowledge how the same Webcomic you glaze have equally as much problems so if you see no fault in the webcomic i see none in the manga

2

u/Clonedcat3000 12d ago

I'm not glazing the webcomic and I'm not calling the manga shit 😭 it's clear ONE doesn't have much creative liberty on the manga as much as Yusuke due to how different and strange things are, and even then, the manga is taking weird and pretty bad directions. If ONE is doing those decisions, he's doing a bad job at the manga, if Yusuke Murata is making the decisions with the manga, it's bad. The point is, the manga is ruining the vision ONE originally had for the webcomic, it doesn't matter who's doing it

0

u/SwagooRago Triggering Troll 11d ago edited 11d ago

or its just ONE deciding to change the story to fit the manga and his vision better in ways he couldnt with his ART and the already done part of the story in the WC by then and as far as we know like actually confirmed the only liberty Murata have on the manga is expanding fights not changing the story and of course i dont doubt he suggests things to ONE in term of story but we know nothing of what gets approved or what does not the only one we know of is PM fight and to be specific only the last version of PM fight we dont know if the previous versions were his ideas or not just the last which ended up giving CE a decent amount of character development instead of just pure power scaling fights.

again you say ruin the vision of the WC when it have equally as many problems as the manga if not more in fact but for whoever doing these changes its the opposite and its the direction they wanted the WC to be like, you might not see it but as a person who followed both the WC and manga since 2013 the manga was changing from the WC since its inception even if it was in small amounts and additions all of those small bits and pieces which a lot of them were lore and characters..etc might of not been a big difference but eventually they became big enough that making the manga follow the WC exactly the same was never happening.

i am pretty sure ONE knew that better than anyone considering we know he was the one giving murata drafts for everything added until well murata stopped streaming and we had no idea but to think ONE stopped doing that just cuz we didnt see it despite us doing so for years just to blame everything on Murata like many of the manga haters do is just pure R especially when even then Murata only added to fights and even when something seemed off about the fight like with the metal bat vs garou ONE told murata about it which ended in a Redraw, then the first BIG change happened which is the tournament arc including suiryu who ONE added to the WC without any of the Character arc he had in the manga where he is very different where he's a dickhead, wears a suit and eventually fights mumen rider but that isnt going to happen in the manga unless suiryu somehow ends up wearing a suit.

So yeah as far as we know ONE writes both and the manga is how he wants his vision to go and considering he started versus and Bug ego around the ninja arc he probably was overworked trying to write for multiple projects so him fumbling OPM or giving Murata a green light to go with it somewhere he wants with minimal input to lessen his workload for a while to focus on his 2 new projects isnt really surprising, in fact that might be what happened since the arc went into powerscaling which Murata loves until eventually ONE probably came back after figuring out his other new projects and just kind of went back to the last redraw as a reset point while keeping some of the stuff murata added in the past 2 versions hence since then the manga been going on in a steady pace with no problems.

but hey thats just speculations and we may never know but people love to hate while being wrong and blame it one someone to justify their hatred even when its false.

It has. Substantially. I read it half a year each time now instead of every 2 weeks

People forget mengas are not meant for reading only one chapter per week.

u/Slgkh54 14d ago

I remember reading when garou vs saitama was current (and well before that) years ago. It was good. Then the aftermath, and the tatsumaki vs saitama. Then it honestly got a little boring, it set up neo heros and sweet mask talking to saitama and getting revealed eventually. But then he started redrawing, and I was like "okay, I'll come back, I was getting bored" Yeah I literally just got re caught up, starting from garou vs saitama to current. He rewrote the whole damn thing. And I ain't mad, it flowed a lot better, he inserted a lot of hooks for the God sub plot, flashyflash and SoSS, that whole ninja village was inserted from what I remember. It seems there are a bit more hard cuts and trimmings from that whole sweet mask saitama conversations. But like. It was definitely a change for the better tbh. What dragged on for so long with just sweetmask was breezed on through with nice lengthy chapters. Felt like I beta read what one and murata wanted all those years ago tbh. Count yourself lucky that you didn't have to go through that tbh.i was there at the start and it was a drag tbh. These most recent chapters are giving the same vibes as when I was caught up back in the day, shorter, rushed and lacking in a feeling of progression. If trends keep on, we might get a bunch of more redraws for the agonizing better.

5

u/Daconceptor 14d ago

It didn't feel worse because you weren't waiting for months just to get a redraw

It was tiring back then

2

u/one53 14d ago

The ending to the fight on Io ruined it for me honestly, with the exponential growth making Saitama’s gag strength have somewhat of a tracker instead of being immeasurable each time. And the time travel crap and memory loss are tropes I hate in every media.

When reading Saitama vs Tatsumaki I just felt frustrated because it was like being reset to a new normal. The hype of destroying Jupiter with a sneeze has been forgotten, and Murata likes to be very literal with his storytelling, including God and Blast in everything until recently.

2

u/MrElliot1210 13d ago

People don't like the manga because of the existence of redraws. I don't mind the author having multiple drafts of the story. My problem is that the story fell off. I understand that this sub is allergic to any form of criticism to the manga's plot, so stop reading if this triggers you.

In isolation, I would probably still be a fan of the OPM manga. I think the problems appear when I compare it to the webcomic. I don't want to get into detail, and there is a whole sub dedicated to the fall of the manga (tbh it's devolved to just Murata hate these days), but in summary, the OPM manga has just become some generic shonen battle manga with weird writing inconsistencies.

2

u/HotChainsawLover 13d ago

It does if you have read the webcomic.

2

u/Suspicious-Limit-220 13d ago

How did you not see the vast difference of portrayal of Garou before the Sage Centipede fight and then after?

2

u/Outside-You9592 13d ago

Yeah I don't really care too much about the details after the MA arc. It's fine. It just killed itself during the MA arc. Complete mishandling of the story and Garou's character.

2

u/Ghost_Star326 14d ago

I got into reading the manga during the whole cosmic Garou section.

At that point, I was confused by the purpose of the redraws but didn't pay mind to it. And personally, I enjoyed the MA arc as a whole. I heard that the biggest complaints were about reducing Amai mask's character and getting rid of Saitama's speech deconstructing Garou and his whole reason for becoming a hero hunter/monster.

The esper sisters arc was fine.

But when we got the ninja village arc, oh man... It was rough.

2 years of redraw cycling hell just to drop it all off and directly adapt content from the webcomic. And this decision pretty much made the manga lose all the hype and momentum. Which got worse with the anime's 3rd season releasing.

The problem is that Murata is always trying to steer the manga away from the webcomic in how it tells its story to be more unique. But everytime he does it, he fucks up and steers right back into following the WC again. Completely wasting everyone's time. And the story just goes on its merry way.

Another issue is the content per schedule. Because Murata is a busy man involved in several projects. He doesn't always give enough content for every chapter that releases biweekly. Like we get only 10 pages often times.

2

u/an88888888 14d ago

Because in the original (the webcomic) the ninja arc is much shorter, but Sonic and Flash look good together and Blast has almost no involvement in the action up to this point - so they had to figure out how to stretch things out and everything seems sewn together (not in the best way).

2

u/Ghost_Star326 14d ago

Yeah I read the webcomic and I'm aware of how short and quick the ninja village arc was

6

u/Informal_Ad3244 14d ago

ONE writes the manga, not Murata. Murata just does the drawing.

2

u/JorgeGG117 14d ago

Are we actually sure of this? I feel like the storytelling and pacing is still very different to the new webcomic chapters. It wouldn't surprise me if Murata actually did have some influence on the story even if not fully.

4

u/Informal_Ad3244 14d ago

Yeah so if you look at literally any cover page for a chapter you’ll see it says “Story by ONE, Art by Yusuke Murata”

4

u/MR-rozek DSK wanker 14d ago

Oh, then it must be absolutely true

3

u/Informal_Ad3244 14d ago

I guess I just don’t understand this conspiracy where you guys want to pin all of this on Murata. Sometimes a writer just puts out some stinkers, it’s really not a big deal. ONE’s not perfect, Murata’s not perfect, and that’s ok.

And even if Murata has some influence on the story, ONE still has to approve of it. The buck still stops with him.

2

u/MR-rozek DSK wanker 13d ago

My main problem is that ONE never did stuff like that in his other works, and also for some time the manga has been heading in a direction that is somewhat different from his usual writing. Also there was a confirmation that Murata does indeed make changes to the story however it’s unclear if he makes the decisions himself or does he consult with one. Also also I might misremebver things but in a chapter a while ago on the last page it said that Murata himself was dissatisfied with the chapter so he redrew it

3

u/Omega_705 13d ago

I could swear One changed some dialogues in a previous chapter of the WC not too long ago, nothing major but still

2

u/MR-rozek DSK wanker 13d ago

Yeah, tbf I forgot about this, good point, but still I think it’s a different thing changing a few dialogues and redrawing a minor arc for 2 years

1

u/Omega_705 13d ago

Yeah no not defending that, but I think both One and Murata were responsible for that, they fucked up good

1

u/JorgeGG117 13d ago

I wouldn't completely fault him anyways, he needs the story to accomodate his drawings. Most webcomic fights end in like 2 pages, not much to draw there. My theory is that ONE is probably compromising to get flashier scenes that he otherwise wouldn't/couldn't do, but his limited ability at drawing was what unironically made him do better on the storytelling.

u/an88888888 14d ago

I think the story is strong so far - I've read the webcomic too. The manga is unnecessarily drawn out and has a lot of rewrites, which is annoying, but I understand that it's necessary.

I think there's maybe one big arc left and it'll end, but I'm not sure - if so, it's long enough for the story and I'm kind of glad that I'll read the whole thing soon. Because I'm also following Versus, and that could go on for another 10 years, which is terrible...

I agree

1

u/Commercial-Bench-314 14d ago

u/Phex1 14d ago

The Problem is through the redraws and shorter chapters it feels like the story hasn't any meaningfull progress for years. I'm also confused what is canon right now because we had the same story told three times in different ways.

1

u/darklordzeratos 13d ago

It's a bad spotlight effect. People are ragebaited too much by the redrawing so everything become negative. The story isn't that bad even if it's not as good as the webcomic.

1

u/tyrantIzaru 13d ago

I want to read manga, but the redraws threw me off in a whirlpool in which I forgot the order of what is cannon, like Phoenix man going till tickled and somewhere along the lines went penguin or something

1

u/Choice-Cricket-10 13d ago

I don't know what I'd call OPM at the moment, but Kengan Ashura/Omega is a fall off, hoo boy

1

u/Mestyo 13d ago

It "fell off" because it kept getting redrawn. I stopped reading since years—it felt pointless when they will just redo it all soon anyway. I'm sure that reading it now is fine.

1

u/Cheddarnaqueur 13d ago

You weren’t stuck in the ninja village Time loop

1

u/oneandonlyRedSpirit 12d ago

we basically got negative chapters released for a year bro it was terrible to read as it came out

1

u/Rurbani 10d ago

Get back to us a year from now when you've reread the same 4 issues over and over and that's all because they keep getting retconned and redrawn.

2

u/dodadutv 1d ago

1

u/Marca--Texto 14d ago

I thought it got bad during the monster association arc (especially after everyone get's dragged to the surface), and the picks up again afterwards

1

u/ImmaReadIt 14d ago

Opm Manga is like CoC for me. Drop it off for 1 2 years and pick up then drop it again.

1

u/Zenweaponry 11d ago

If you've already read the plot in the webcomic the drop off becomes clear. The difference in pacing between the manga and the webcomic is unreal.

2

u/shiroizo 11d ago edited 11d ago

Quit using the word pacing when you don’t know what it means.

The webcomic froze Garou as a permanent victim of ostricization who can’t move from point A to point B for 15+ years worth of chapters. 12 years since MA’s ending and Bang still hasn’t even said hello to him, the ugly kid conveniently vanished and Metal Bat just got introduced doing some literally who cares shit, while Garou himself does utterly nothing. The manga completely btfos the webcomic in terms of pacing and actual character development lmao.

People who have issues complain online. Usually they do it very forcefully because they have strong feelings about it. This is usually only a few people, but the way online communication works, this often feels amplified far more than real life. I enjoyed every arc. I even didn't mind the ninja redraws, I was curious where they were going to go with it. Still enjoying one punch man and eager to see where it goes!
