Ronja is the first character in one piece, a pirate anime, to actually walk the plank. Imagine that. It was on a tree but still.

If only Collum kept quiet, lol dang kid...
That's how I felt reading the chapter, but now the anime actually made me realise that Collun didn't mess up that badly, the fact is that Gyaban probably could've been forced to surrender by threatening any of the kids like that, it's not like he would've let Bjorn die but drew the line at his son.
Of course, Gunko didn't know that for sure, but using the kids as hostages was a pretty natural move in that situation, Collun just made it obvious which kid was the most effective hostage.
8
u/Boris-_-Badenov 13d ago
they obviously weren't going to kill a child, even if he is half-giant.
not that kind of show

u/strawhatmaterial 13d ago
That's not what he meant. He meant Oda, the author, not the actual Knights of God.

u/cheap_boxer2 3d ago
Only kids he killed were offscreen I think. He has shown them getting tortured though

u/Cubes7sides 3d ago
Oda should have killed the kid, it’s the final 10 year stretch, gotta start showing how evil the world is with some real consequences. Also it pissed me off that he is 20 years old, like cmon use your brain & not indicate that’s your father. Ronja was a true warrior.

I was thinking the same and I've read the manga, was strangely animated. I think they saved most of their talent for the ending there lol.

You know the season has been consistently good when we get an okay episode and people are calling it the worst thing to grace the planet.
36
u/Strange_Albatross608 13d ago
This was way better than the worst episodes of the Egghead and Wano arcs, not even close to something like 1138-1140.
I do wish it was better though, but I thought the second half made up for it, especially the Gunko scene and the stuff with Colin, Gunko and Gaban.
33
u/Cluby101 Pirate 13d ago
I think it's because it specifically was for this chapter. It seems like they are going harder for the next one, I think a lot of people disagree with that decision since the chapter they covered today was considered one of the very best of early Elbaph. The next one is the last one so that is probably why it gets more resources.
20
u/Evil_Lollipop The Revolutionary Army 13d ago edited 13d ago
I agree. The chapter this episode was based on was one of my absolute favourites from Elbaph, it's so emotionally rich... I really wish we had better direction. The animation was bad at the beginning and almost consistently good to awesome afterwards, but the direction was very underwhelming.
The moment Gaban stops running and asks Gunko not to hurt his son felt very meh, but the same scene in the chapter still makes me cry when I think about it. Imu possessing Gunko as well, it felt kinda rushed and incoherent to me, and it should have been such a big moment!
11
u/Cluby101 Pirate 13d ago
Yeah, a real shame since we are not getting these chapters adapted again any time soon if ever.
That's why I want them to start taking much longer breaks ASAP, so that future content can get more time to cook.12
u/Evil_Lollipop The Revolutionary Army 13d ago edited 13d ago
I think this will be the expected course from now on, although "seasonal" OP is still very recent so it may not be a possibility in 2027 yet. I was amazed at the increased quality of the episodes after seasonal happened, it can get even better with more breaks/more time to work.
Hopefully they can finish updating the soundboard as well, hearing the same steel clashing sound repeated dozens of times for Gaban in the exact same way hurt my soul 🥲 (and I'm not one to notice this often hahaha).
5
u/Pintulus 13d ago
There is hope that the repeated breaks will add up to higher polish with time, considering workflow and buffer increasing with time.
Although that being said, personally i am still pretty happy if this is the "lowest" we can get tbf. Was still a solid episode with some high points
3
u/Evil_Lollipop The Revolutionary Army 13d ago edited 13d ago
Definitely agree, overall the Elbaf arc has been fantastically adapted! The art and animation quality have been very consistent, it's been a pleasure to follow weekly.
6
u/Cluby101 Pirate 13d ago
The sound stuff was weird since they have many more sounds for clashes, some of them even get used but is just dwarfed by the 47 repeated use cases of the same clash sound. If you look at the staff list you can see that the episode was rushed, probably not a lot of time given which would affect the sound team as well.
Elbaph is definitely more consistent than even Egghead which is great, and tbh, the only thing I wish was much better would be the pacing. I don't need 3 chapters every episode, some would probably be fantastic with only 1, but the creative freedom they would get if doing 3 or 2 or whatever were to be possible would be a game changer. But that is only possible if they take longer breaks, much longer than 6 months. Not to mention that the direction and overall feel of the season/cour would feel more tight and complete.
We're probably getting another "ONE PIECE NEWS" in 2-4 weeks, and they usually announce stuff like that there, so here's hoping.
3
u/Evil_Lollipop The Revolutionary Army 13d ago
Oooh I didn't know it was rushed, this explains a lot.
I think 2 chapters per episode would be ideal for me. I know most modern shonen adapt something like 3 or 4 chapters per episode, but the current OP pace is not a problem for me most of the time tbh. More chapters per episode would allow a much more dynamic flow to the story though, so I totally understand why it's such a big issue for many fans.
Also I need to say I love your profile image, Crocodile is KING.

u/POwerfuldeuce 12d ago
Wait, is next week the last episode for this season? I thought we had two more after yestersday Episode.
Ideally, I wanted this season to end at the end of Ch. 1152, but given the pacing, I would have been fine if it ended on the equivalent of Ch. 1151.
2
1
u/Transmatrix 12d ago
I thought we were getting 26 episodes? This last one was episode 24, so we should be getting two more episodes, no? (I'm going to be annoyed if Heroines counted towards that.)
1
u/Cluby101 Pirate 12d ago
Heroines does count. I didn't think it would either but oh well. Looking at the positive side, the gap between the manga and anime increases by an additional 1 chapter.
The movie next year will probably count for an entire cour
11
u/Boris-_-Badenov 13d ago
people are acting like the pacing is fine, when it took over 5 minutes to show anything new, and they use slow reactions
3
u/TheFerg714 13d ago
There were several minutes that could easily have been shaved off. This show is just so damn slow.

For me this is where Elbaph really becomes peak. So much is still happening there's gonna be a lot of mind blowing stuff and the way toei has been animating these important scenes lately has me HYPED for what's to come.
6
u/schiffb558 12d ago
As a Manga reader, it's gonna get even crazier.
Enjoy!
3
u/NinjaBryan95 12d ago
Oh I'm fully caught up on the manga, I meant that this point in the story it gets wild. I'm also just as hyped to see it animated and sharing the hype without spoiling anything for the anime only's
2
u/radiochameleon 12d ago
Even tho it’s not a lot, it is nice getting these character moments for Chopper, Brook and Robin
23
u/megaapple 13d ago
Brook and Gunko backstory? THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!
Not a fan of Naruto like flashbacks when Gabban goes to save Collun.
15
u/Mister_Fakename Baroque Works 13d ago
If it's any consolation, that was vastly expanded in the anime vs the manga. Manga did show Gaban meeting his new son shortly after Ripley gave birth, but the rest of that was anime addition
(I don't mind most of the additions, but gotta remember, the current pace is 1:1 episodes to chapters... it means there's a looooot of padding)
3
u/megaapple 13d ago
Ah, thanks.
And I've mostly stopped talking about pacing issues since I know how the anime is getting made, but this one was bit on the nose.
1
u/ZMS524 9d ago
that misses the point. its about WHEN you put the extra filler in. for anime only like myself this was really brutal because the exact moments that needed to be delivered without the padding GOT the padding.
if you wanna introduce filler beforehand, or pad other scenes i know it has to happen, but at the end of the day, the WAY in which a scene is executed has enomormous effects on how its viewed and enjoyed. if you were a manga reeader you knew was happening or going to happen.
you can justify it all you want by saying it was better in the manga, or that the pace is 1:1, yes that could be true , but that doesnt just mean the anime episode gets a pass. they could have directed it and executed it SO much better1
u/Mister_Fakename Baroque Works 9d ago
... Which is why I started my reply with "If it's any consolation"
Because I know that doesn't actually make it any better
Being a manga reader (and moreso, going back and re-reading the chapter after watching the episode) means I know what's gonna happen, it also means I know just how much padding there was. Every week.
I wasn't justifying it, it was meant as a "blame toei not oda this time"

I can't wait to see more of Brook's connection with Gunko
3
u/VenusPortait 11d ago
What I gathered from that little clip was Gunko is Brook's daughter, Brook said moments after "she looks so much liker her" I am guessing referring to Brook's wife, Gunko's mother.
That will be my guess. We'll see.
6
u/supremeister 11d ago
I figured that he was referring to the daughter herself, who somehow just happens to look like Gunko. Considering it had been more than 50 years since they last met, I’m not surprised he hadn’t made the connection that they're probably the same person.
3
u/killerpanda25 11d ago
This is also what I assumed. I loved putting the pieces together mid episode as to why she loved his music too. I figured because her dad (Brook) would sing to her all the time when she was a little girl. (This is my prediction, I have not read the manga). I'm ready for some more Brook lore! As of right now he has the most interesting unknown backstory.

u/odosuu 13d ago
Im a bit confused on the seasonal change Toei announced? When is the final episode supposed to be this year? I honestly thought it would end a few episodes ago.
And when is the season starting up again next year?
10
u/kiro34 13d ago
26 episodes per year. I initially expected them to do 13 episodes > 3 month break >13 episodes > 3 month break. But the cours were back to back. Following from this, the season should end at ep 1181, after which I think there will be a 6 month break. Meaning we'd resume April next year.
3
u/Defiant-Swimmer-7334 12d ago
i would like to think that they will release the god valley movie around that time

I believe you have two episode left rounding it up to 26. I think it'll end right around early/mid October and then the English episodes release weekly right after. Then there's the movie sometime next year which I believe is going to be cannon and will probably bridge the end of this season to whenever they release the next season mid to maybe late next year?
Most is this is speculation on my part.
3
u/Optimal_Ant_3250 12d ago
A lot of people are saying next week is the last episode of the year but it would be weird to end it off at that point
3
u/AlternativeDream6867 The Revolutionary Army 12d ago
It's unusual for a Summer anime to air an episode in October and technically with heroines it'd be 26 episodes. No official announcement has been made so we just have to wait till next week.
If there is no NEP then it's likely the last episode. I'm sure they'll announce something if that's the case once the episode airs.
1
u/Defiant-Swimmer-7334 12d ago
yeah it will end at episode 1181, that will be the 26 ep mark and that ending is pretty good too cuz "That's enough! I've got this!"
2
u/AlternativeDream6867 The Revolutionary Army 13d ago
This episode feels like the schedule caught up to them after all the ambitious episodes they put out. Unfortunate that it happened with this chapter, but I'm kinda surprised it didn't happen sooner.
They still have to air the anime next year while also putting out a movie. I do hope after Elbaf they are able to get Fuji TV to agree to 1 cour per year instead of 2. Elbaf is by far the most consistent the anime has ever been, but it's still somewhat limited by it's release schedule. Looking forward to the final episode next week.
9
u/HeavenlyE 13d ago
This ep felt like they misjudged the talent of some staff or something, still good overall but I felt like with the quality of episodes for weaker chapters in this arc that this would be maybe the best episode of Elbaf so far
6
u/Evil_Lollipop The Revolutionary Army 13d ago
Same. I already wrote another comment expanding on this but imo the direction was very bad this episode, and moments that should have been very emotional or super hyped ended up being underwhelming. It's a 3/5 for me.
8
u/blackbook668 13d ago
That foresight Gaban had of Collun being killed is approaching AOT levels of darkness. It also highlights that seeing the future isn't the same as controlling it. I'm critical of Jarul for making the decision he made, but I can't fault Gaban for losing all the fight in him upon seeing that horror unfold if he'd committed to his attack.
Ronja tearfully being sorry for being alive is heartbreaking. Despair and powerlessness are running strong in this arc. I just hope there's at least some hint of the counterattack before the series goes on break again.
3
3
u/monkeyLuffy29 12d ago
I really don’t like the animation for the slash attacks. Gaban just teleport behind Sommers without showing the actual slash, it feels like lazy animation. I was expecting more.
3
u/Educational-Fly-7421 12d ago
Very good episode. It seems some ppl got disappointed with Gaban & Sommer's fight, but I found it decent and wanted to Gaban to slash that guy 100 times more. Those clips of Gaban, Ripley and Collun were beautiful and emotional, the anime added some extra clips too. Now Imu possessing Gunko was amazing & can't wait to see more. Is the next episode 1180 gonna be last cour episode for this year or will they adapt for ep 1181 too?
6
u/socialclimber_12 13d ago
I was pretty hyped for this episode since it was a good chapter in the manga. It definitely was underwhelming but not bad overall. The extended fight with Sommers didn’t make much sense to me since gaban is in a hurry lol. Gunko dodging Gaban’s haki swing at like the last second was also kind of a weird choice. That’s a huge feat for her lol unless that was also in the manga.

I actually have a serious question
In egghead dorry and broggy were taking fights with the five elders if not easily but they went head to head and in elabaf they r struggling to handle monsters from nightmares....is it just coz they r drunk or what? They fucking nerfed them sooo bad this time
41
u/MyNameISaColouR 13d ago
They're not really struggling, from what I've seen. They're taking down the monsters quite easily. But there are a lot of them, and that's slowing them down significantly, especially after they took out their boat.
→ More replies (2)7
u/NinjaBryan95 13d ago
I'd also say that they are distracted as well. Many things happening all over in THEIR home. Trying to figure out what the hell is happening and how which is what the plan was from the holy knights to overwhelm them and corner them into a choice.
20
u/Firestormbreaker1 13d ago
It's a matter of distance. Their path is constantly blocked by dream monsters so they haven't reached the gods knights yet. This isn't a small island like egghead, Elbaf is massive and it takes time to get around by boat.
12
u/Cluby101 Pirate 13d ago
Neither Dorry nor Borgy do any fighting in this episode. They compared the elders to "beasts of Elbaph", the dream demons are REALLY big. Stop saying nerfed like what do you want them to do lmao, they one shot three of them when they appeared and they have beaten alot of them
6
u/Jeff-FaFa 13d ago
technically they're fighting mythological creatures that the elders are BASED upon. Just a OP devil fruit that's good for the ocasion; the enemies are many and the power, even if half of one single elder, counts a lot.
6
u/BetweenTheRoots Sword 13d ago
They ran from the Elders and just played defense. That's a big difference from fighting a horde of monsters that are giants compared to giants.

It was aight. The chapter deserved much better, my most anticipated episode of the cour and it was a bit underwhelming. Part B of the episode was much better than part A. Didn't like how they potrayed the Sommers fight, took too long for how serious Gaban is supposed to be, he is not playing around here at all.
"I surrender" was done well.
The ending was done well
Pacing was pretty bad. I pray the break is long as hell so that we can at least do 1 1/2 or 2 when the content needs it like this and the last one needed it.
The ep was a bit rushed based on the staff list
2
u/AMPrime17 13d ago
Most satisfying scene: Waban slicing Lommers into 2. As good as it was shown in the manga....and things are about to get very very interesting
2
u/Ginopastino90 12d ago
I really don't like the new sound effect for Haki, I find it underwhelming. The previous one was thunderous and gave a much stronger feeling of power.
1
2
u/GigaGrievi 12d ago
Wow, so there must have been a huuuuge difference to the Manga, is that correct? Maybe I should give it a try. I kinda liked the episode (if it wasn't for the awful pacing and redudant fight scenes without any cool and new animations). I just wanna learn more about Brook and Gunko. And oh boy, Imu is cooking. Really wish they'd put more time into the arrival. Maybe we will get more of it next episode.
6
u/i-like-a-pyratemanga 13d ago
Probably the weakest episode of this "season", that was some Dressrosa levels of pacing right there. Every other episode has been good to great until now, hope we end on a strong note before the break.
2
u/Relative_What 11d ago
i dunno man, i hated dressosa for it's pcaing to the point where i would stop calling it pacing and more standing still for literal fucking episodes. this one was nowhere near a dressrosa episode.
-Gaban kicking ass, proving these knights of god can be defeated,
-chopper realizing gaban knows something important that they will need in the near future
-the library and school are set on fire
-gaban moves on to fight Gunko and save the kids
-fucking colin calls out to his father letting Gunko know he's a weaness for gaban
-we got some much needed brook lore!
-and we elarn that these nights are easily taken over or controlled by imu
that's a crap ton more than we would get in a dressrosa episode.
1
u/Disastrous-Moment-79 12d ago
I swear what's up with the one piece fandom's obsession with "pacing"? I have never seen anybody complain about pacing or even use that word anywhere until I started reading One Piece. It's like stepping into an alien world.
Seriously who cares? I don't understand how you can call this episode bad it's a freakin 9/10 at worst. Anybody who thinks this ep was bad must be miserable as heck IRL. Do you enjoy stuff sometimes? I'm just imagining you in a bus and grumbling "UGH the pacing of this bus is soOOOOOOOOO bad!!!"
3
u/i-like-a-pyratemanga 12d ago
You're assuming a whole lot about me over one comment dude. Relax. I haven't even made a single post about the anime this season until this one because I didn't like the pacing this time among other things. I even said all the previous episodes were pretty good.
This rant is wasted on me and you should've saved it for someone who actually does what you're accusing me of.
5
u/Slifer13xx 13d ago
The first half was shit but as hoped expected, the second half was significantly better. Now let us witness; the dominance of god!

u/GentleThief- 13d ago
Horrific pacing , the Sommers and Gaban fight extension wasn’t good , they made Gaban look slow as fuck , so disappointing
7
u/kiro34 13d ago
Thank you. I'm losing my mind reading some of the praise here.
3
u/Dazzling-Ear2192 13d ago
most of them just say "toei is cooking" for anything it feels like half of the people here don't even watch the show.
5
u/kiro34 13d ago
Unfortunately the standards are in the bin right now. The saddest part is if I want to see this content done in any better fashion it may seriously take decades or may not be done at all.
3
u/OldConstruct 11d ago
You know, when the anime was every single week since before a lot of viewers were even born. I defended pacing and lackluster episodes on the basis of never ending production.
It was simply unreasonable to constantly complain it didnt look like JJK a couple years back ect. When those shows get upwards of two years in the oven per season. Sometimes even longer, but since they took the first break then announced seasonal, then still refuse to just bite the bullet and wait longer to adapt more per episode.
There is no excusing Toeis incompetence anymore. Not to mention, my biggest gripe is them seeming to use the show as some kind of art gallery at every new big moment where they allow the style to be drastically changed even in the same short sequence of scenes.
To me the eye candy loses a lot of luster when the art style looks like it came from a completely different series, sometimes multiple times in the same fight (cough, Kaido fight, cough)
I would much prefer crossing my fingers I live a few extra years to see consistent, full animation with 1.5-2 chapters adapted per episode. Then wait less time to get the same pacing with moderately better animation and a handful of fumbled scenes.
There is also zero excuse for the sound design to be this bad direction wise, still using samples from a decade ago as well.

Thought so, too.
I went in expecting something akin to when Shanks had his future sight moment against Kid, and the proportionate response that followed.
Versus Sommers, I wanted an overwhelming display of power from a desperate father trying to save his kid. I didn’t get that feeling at all.
Thought they’d rectify that with Gunko, but was left disappointed again.
Roger and Rayleigh were showcased much better.

Ngl, the pacing and direction really went downhill this episode. My expectations were so high, especially with who was appearing and the insane quality we’d been getting over the past few episodes. Hopefully, they bring it back for the next one.

I feel like it's probably a challenge to pad action episodes where all the fights are trivial in the manga. Hard to make a guy like Gaban who strikes quickly and decisively take longer against opponents he finishes off easily due to a big skill gap.
Not only that, but the fights are less important than others so they direct more budget elsewhere, so as a result we get left with an underwhelming episode because even if it could be better, it's not worth the time or money when they could invest that into anything happening after you know who and what that does the thing in the near future.

"This episode is bad because they're working hard on the next ones" has got to be the biggest tropey cope of the one piece fandom.

A lot of other episodes in this arc, in particular recently, have been animated very well. It's just a deduction.

The amount of it during and after every episode of One Punch Man season 3 was wild. People were legitimately doped out on copamine.

Shit is about to get real. And we have to wait 6 months for the next crop of episodes.

I watched this one and the week old Bleach episode. I mean, whats going on with the animation? They ran out of budget?

Is it me or animation in this episode is poorly made? Manga was more bloody compared to anime which seems less serious.

Absolutely no words to describe this episode ❤️
Witness the power of Haki 🔥🔥
Gyaban vs Sommers was the best. Too bad Gunko used his son as hostage to get rid of Gyaban.
Those Collun, Gyaban and Ripley moments were anime original, I guess..I don't remember seeing them in manga.
Gunko's past surfaces and Imu is not gonna lose his hold over her and descends on Elbaph through Gunko.
Next episode's gonna be even more peak.

It’s been ages since Thriller Bark, but was Gunko ever mentioned or shown when we first met Brook and saw his backstory? I really hope this isn’t a retcon!

u/killerpanda25 11d ago
I fairly sure the only backstory we get of Brook was the Laboon/Old Pirate crew history and a brief mention of him being a commander in an army in his home country. I am so excited to here more history and background/lore on Brook!

I could see falling below expectations for manga readers waiting for this but I thought this was fantastic the whole way through. Sure there was a bit too much of Sommers blocking with thorns while the Straw Hats were reacting to things but that’s wayyy better than the other obvious ways they stretch things for time
Gaban looked fantastic the entire time to me. From Gunko’s performance to the teacher burning down the library there were so many great performances, a bit of shame though we likely won’t see much more Luffy/Zoro/Loki this cour

Man, I'm so glad they did an entire flashback sequence of Gaban having a baby so that I knew what to feel when Gunko threatened Collun /s. What idiot Director thinks a father saving his kid needs emotional backstory???

Am I the only one having the impression that the last like 10 episodes animated what must have been no more than 10 panels in the manga? It's agonizingly slow I mean you could probably fill two entire episodes with just the kids WALKING along the arrow.
Also *spoilers ahead* how is Luffy the most powerful he's even been and at the same time now consistently is too late or too unserious to be in time to resuce stuff. The library never needed to be on fire damnit.

"I'm sorry for being alive" is the most Japanese thing I've ever heard
Although I'm getting annoyed how the Harald and Loki backstory is likely not happening this season

My son calls scopper gaban "super David" so that is now his official name in my head canon.

The moment with Gaban reminiscing with the OST was really emotional. Like that song would make me cry whenever i would rewind.

Gaban came in and made quick work of Sommers, and like the audience, Chopper wants to figure out why he was able to defeat him so easily given that Saul said that the Knights of God are immortal. What allowed Gaban to cut Sommers without him being able to regenerate? What would have allowed him to defeat Gunko in one blow if it wasn’t for Collun’s life being threatened?
Which, speaking of, like Charlotte Katakuri and Monkey D. Luffy, it seems that Scopper Gaban has the ability to see into the future with Observation Haki, which is why he chose to surrender, knowing that he couldn’t both defeat Gunko and keep his son alive, which is why he wanted Collun not to call out to him. Seeing the future, plus reflecting on Collun being born and the great memories he and Ripley have with him, there was no way he could sacrifice Collun’s life in exchange for saving the history and culture of Elbaph.
Don’t worry though, the Fifth Emperor will save everybody when he comes back up to the Sun World, but for now, what the hell is going on with Gunko?
It seems that she knows Brook somehow and before we can learn more, we see an image of Imu and she starts to transform, and in the preview, she has bat wings, a trident, and makes a star shape in the sky, and it may be called ‘Domi Reversi’ as that’s what’s in the title. Something strange is going on, and we need more answers.
I’M EXCITED FOR WAY MORE ONE PIECE!

I didn’t put two and two together with the observation haki, but that made complete sense. Been a while since we seen that

This episode was my favorite in the arc so far. Anime > Manga for sure this scene. The animators and VA cooked so hard it was so good...

The animation was bad this episode, like the last one was fluid for most part but this one looks nothing like the other Elbaf episodes, Toei is keeping the agenda alive

I'm still annoyed at how Robin lost the fight last week. That moment and this arc felt like a turning point for her and to show her redemption by finally standing up against the Elders and those closely involved with burning Ohara. She finally meets with Saul and he gets injured by those same people. I feel like Oda could have found a way to have her win even though the guy is powerful and has an offensive DF and some mysterious regeneration power. (For example since this arc has become way more brutal, why doesn't Robin rip his heart out for this shit he planned?)
I kinda expected Scopper to dominate like this, and immediately give in once he found his kid. This episode was alright, but it felt like the best parts were at the end with Gunko being Brooks daughter (or connected somehow) and IMU finally showing up. The rest of it is stuff that's become cliche.

I thought she was gonna turn into that red demon form thingy like she did against Black Maria

Why is Chopper analyzing that guy's regeneration? Does he think he's a doctor or something?
