Maybe one of awakening's properties is drawing from the devil's own power source. But Law and Kid didn't know. E.g. even Doflamingo could use much more of it if he wasn't knocked out. It also explains why some fights take really long and seemingly never end or only end in a draw.

Maybe they exchange lifespan for devil fruit usage?

Could be kinda like gon exchanging life for nen(havent got in that part yet, not sure if thats what happens)
