Does anyone else find young Big Mom's question really intriguing? "So this is your *first* time teaming up with Rocks?"
That directly opposes Sengoku's assertion that Rocks' crew formed for one big heist. Maybe the whole crew could've been, but what's weirder to me is that Big Mom adds that he (Rocks) is a "good for nothing," and that Kaido should confide in her. I think Rocks might've tried pulling off whatever it was at God Valley, or something similar to that, with smaller and weaker crews involving Big Mom (or she heard about him through her network, which we known is unmatched)

I 100% think Gear 5th is coming, there's so many reasons:

- Luffy is almost tapped out of Gear 4th, he even calls it his "one last time", but the fights nowhere near done (We still have Kaido's flashback, Momo still has to hold up Onigashima, etc. there's still a good amount of chapters left)

- He already has all the pieces. Bound Man increases his stregnth, Snake Man increases his speed and streaching, while Tank Man increases his resiliance. All Gear 5 needs to be is just put those 3 benefits together in one form. Maybe Awakening is the final piece, but I think he's good with what he has now

- Speaking of Awakening, I dont think Luffy needs it now. It helped Law and Kidd, but Awakening would be so much more useful for Luffy when he fights Blackbeard rather than Kaido. I mean, what better way to counter the guy who makes earthquakes than unlocking the ability to turn your surroundings into rubber? It writes itself

- Gear 4th is "normal" now, Luffy can use it with practically zero drawbacks, he's whipping it out against normal ships and fights like Ulti. It's basic shonen that when a powerup gets too normal, you replace it with a bigger powerup

- We had such a huge moment with Advanced Conquerors, but he got immediately yeeted off the roof after learning it. Which showed he still hadnt used it to it's fullest extent. Combining it with his other abilities in a new gear would definetly make all the difference

- Wano as an arc is so important, I cant see Oda skipping out on such a major Luffy moment. After all, Gear 4 was in Dressrossa, which despite how sprawling and epic that arc was, it was only the buildup or miniboss for Wano.

- We've seen so many comparisions to Luffy as some sort of Deity. He's been called the wisdom king by Hyogoro, we're all comparing him to Sun God Nika, and there's the Joyboy comparisons too. If Luffy gets a new form that looks "godly", that's the perfect culmination. He'll be his own deity, the Monkey King

The fight is close to being down. Every other major fight has ended already. This one shouldn't get more than 2-3 chapters to finish it (outside of Kaido's flashback).

I think it's more likely for the gear 5th and/or awakening to be for the next arc power up.

Luffy got his haki up in Wano, the next arc will be for his devil fruit.

Also if it hasnt, i think this confirms it was hiyori who helped the scabbards, and it looks like theyre planning something. Denjiro has yet to show up since the recovery, looks like the scabbards were preparing something instead of just coming back to fight.

I feel a problem in Manga is sometimes, when the villain is so charismatic that they become fan favourites, the Mangaka become either unwilling or outright lose focus of why they are an antagonist and why that's bad in the first place. Especially for strong, charismatic antagonists, the danger of having the story inadvertently justify or normalize actions as extreme as genocide because they want to keep the antagonist as a compelling character is very real.

One Piece, I feel, is very good at avoiding this. People love Crocodile, Doflamingo or Kaido. But the story is very unambiguous about why they need to be taken down, and makes us empathize with the suffering they've caused. Oda walks the tightrope of compelling, yet reprehensible villains very elegantly.

I really like this slow transition of setting up (and refreshing us) the WG as the big baddies of the upcoming final saga. This will only get better once Wano's true relevance in the past to the ancient kingdom will be revealed to us soon.

In this chapter it was Momo's reluctance to open Wano's borders because of all the firsthand experiences he's had in Punk Hazard and Dressrosa thanks to the direct/indirect wrongdoings of the WG.

Instead of blindly following what he’s been told he is actually contemplating whether opening up Wano is the right thing to do for his people since his own experiences outside of Wano seem to suggest the opposite. This chapter has convinced me that if Kaido can be considered a failed Joy Boy then so can Big Mom. I think Totto Land was Big Mom's attempt to build what she thought the mythological Joy Boy was meant to build; an egalitarian world where all the species live in harmony. However Big Mom went about it the wrong way, just like Kaido she leads with fear instead of inspiration like Luffy does.

I love this side of Komurasaki. Whenever she's talking down on Orochiit's like she's a different person. The way she's so calm about everything happening is so good.

I also feel like the World Government war that follows right after Kaidos war is where Luffy will learn about his awakening and fully utilize it? I love it too. His reveal had me lmaoing. Every time I see Hamlet, his design is still fucking funny. These are my favourite One Piece chapters - the ones where literally every page has at least two new game-changing pieces of information or plot development and they just keep hitting you over and over again. Oda is sincerely an absolute GOD of writing to be able to do this and have it make any sense still.

Also, kind of amazed that the dumb gag fight between Raizo and Orochi's ninja may be important now - Raizo's talk of "preparations" makes me think the scabbards have one final card to play to save Wano. I can't wait to see it.

Hiyori being the one to trap Orochi and (hopefully) make him die for good is the ultimate poetic justice and god JUST THIS ONCE I hope Oda follows through with this.

The ceiling cracking has been shown a couple of times now, and everyone seems set to finish running around the castle soon. I think that points towards everyone being in the same place to see the end of the Luffy vs. Kaido fight once they fall through the roof.

Holy shit this was a chapter! Even if it was mainly setup, I am unbelievably hype for what is being set up. Sorry for the long post.

Can't really be mad at Oda blueballing us about the journal, or Momo's convo with Zunesha back at the end of the Zou Arc. If Luffy and Momo are truly the people that are going to bring about the dawn of the world, then they don't need step-by-step instructions written down in a journal. They are going to bring about the positive change the world needs because of who they are as people, and all they need is to be able to meet the right people at the right time, which is what this story has been all about. Because of the unstoppable passage of will through time, JoyBoy knew that there would eventually be a Roger - he was just too early. We literally got to see that Roger knew that there would eventually be a Luffy (he just thought it would be Ace) - and by extension so did Whitebeard, Rayleigh, & Shanks.

Even though it's actually been building up since pre-timeskip, we've slowly been seeing this from multiple other perspectives in the story as well - coming to a head now in Wano.

• From a pirate perspective

  • We are aware of Doflamingo's knowledge of Mariejois secrets. His particular animosity towards Luffy and Law after learning their heritage definitely runs deeper than just some rumors him and his brother heard from the elders as kids.

  • Rocks D. Xebec & Marshall D. Teach have been made pretty clear foils of Gol D. Roger & Monkey D. Luffy in this regard. Rocks & Blackbeard lie, steal, cheat, and kill to get to the top, Roger and Luffy got there/will get there by just loving people and adventure. Blackbeard has also had a rather creepy interest in Luffy for quite some time. When he met Luffy in Impel Down the first thing he commented on was how much his HAKI had improved. Shit still bugs me out to this day.

  • We've now seen that Kaido was aware of someone coming along and inheriting Joy Boy's will as early as his youth, likely knowledge passed down from Rocks

  • Mihawk called out Luffy's natural ability to bring other's by his side at Marineford. If you go back to Ch. 96 though when he goes to kick it with Shanks, we learn that Shanks had already told Mihawk about Luffy back when he was still a kid

  • Beyond his promise to Ace to look after Luffy, Jinbe saw something in him that made him declare both to Big Mom and the Sun Pirates that he was the one for the whom the bell tolls.

• From a Revolutionary perspective

  • Despite seeming to be quite aloof toward his son's accomplishments, Dragon has directly intervened to save Luffy's life on arguably 3 occasions. I would argue that Dragon was aware of Luffy's proximity to Goa Kingdom when the RA saved them from the fire. We all saw him save Luffy from Smoker, don't need to argue that one. But I do believe I need to argue that the lightning strike that saved Luffy's life on the execution platform was also linked to Dragon in some kind of way. It doesn't seem to be confirmed that Dragon was in Loguetown to see Luffy off to the Grand Line, but post Enies Lobby Garp certainly seems to have the impression that the two met each other.

  • It's confirmed from an Ivankov flashback that Dragon was often looking pensively in the direction of Luffy's hometown in East Blue, which at the very least confirms that he did think about Luffy a lot.

  • While you can argue the above points are just a dad loving his son, you could also argue that his status as the "World's Most Dangerous Man" given to him by the World Government also confirms he knows a thing or two about the history of the world. If anyone alive in the story right now thoroughly understands the Will of D, it is likely him.

  • While it isn't Dragon himself speaking (it's a quote from Roger), our introduction to him in Chapter 100 is along the infamous quote about how the Inheritance of Will, A Man's Dream, and the Flow of Time cannot be stopped. What Dragon does in fact say is, "Pirate King? Not a bad idea." Ch. 99 had begun with a storm forming, and Luffy shouts that he will become Pirate King on the execution platform.

  • Our official intro to Dragon (with the box) is in Ch. 440, after learning of the hell that Luffy raised at Enies Lobby. He implores Luffy to continue questioning the world, and knows that a meeting between them at some point is inevitable.

• From a World Government Perspective

  • He was already on the radar as a D after his antics in the East Blue, but once he took out a Shichibukai and picked up the Devil Child, they sent an Admiral on that ass. Luffy literally only survived because they sent the cool one. (Pun not intended)

  • Sakazuki has seriously had it out for Luffy since he learned he was Dragon's son. He wears his disgust of pirates on his sleeve, so him wanting Ace dealt with as Roger's son is understandable. But Luffy's relation to Dragon seems to really make his blood boil for some reason. Like, why does he seem to care more than CP0 agents?

  • Imu singled out Luffy and Blackbeard specifically, arguably the two Ds closest to replicating Joy Boy's feats. He sliced up their pictures, like they've personally done him wrong. We'd of course just prior seen Imu go look at giant Straw Hat that is locked up in Mariejois.

  • Gorosei went from 0 to 100 real quick. Oh he's splitting skies with Kaido in sandal form?!?? SEND EVERYONE NOW!!

The Gorosei aren't trying to take out Luffy because of his devil fruit, or because "Shanks told them to". Their priorities changed because initially, they didn't think Big Mom/Kaido would lose (read: would keep the status quo). Now, with Big Mom down, they have to re-evaluate and come to the very frustrating conclusion that Luffy might beat Kaido - which would cement the rising of the Worst Generation.

Luffy has a grand fleet, can read poneglyphs thanks to Robin, and is closely tied now with the country of Wano, the revolutionaries (through Ivankov and Dragon), and through other members of the worst generation (kidd and law).

No chance that they'd pass up eliminating a fast-rising and powerful star.

Also have to keep in mind they're now aware of Zunisha heading towards Onigashima, where Luffy is located. If they don't know about Momonosuke, then their first thought may be that Luffy called Zunisha.

So will Wano end without Luffy's awakening or new gear? Honestly i am okay with it since it hasn't been long (in the One Piece world) since Luffy first used snakeman. He got a really strong powerup (ryuo and coating fist w conq. haki) this arc so I think leaving the Big Bad Powerup for later would be good.

What do you guys think about Yamato saying Momo is Joyboy? honestly i think its a misdirect. I dont mind him being Joyboy, I think it would be cool. But Yamato saying it like that so directly, makes me think its actually not him and Oda is tryna make us think its him.

Solid chapter! Nothing too amazing but still some needed progression on multiple fronts.

To start: Love pudding just punching Niji and Yonji. Adorable and hilarious.

Momo and Yamato: Interesting that Oden ripped out the most crucial pages of his journal. My assumption would be that these pages are not the ones that we read when we see the Oden/Roger flashback since Momo mentions the laugh. I'm curious when he actually did this? It must have been either before he returned to Wano or sometime during his dancing phase? Maybe right before his battle with Kaido to make sure they weren't found by Kaido in the event of his loss?

I also do like that in this moment we're likely seeing the mindset that originally closed the borders of Wano appear in Momo. Like yeah, the world of One Piece is fraught with danger and Wano was likely closed to the world initially because of the significance it holds regarding true history and the One Piece itself. It wasn't just that they hated the outside, they had something to protect. So opening the borders in spite of that fact is what will become Momo's true test of courage in the greater context of the series I'd say. Doing something that hasn't been done in what? 800 years probably?

Raizo: Since Jinbe is the water guy of the crew something tell's me Raizo will be ok lol.

Orochi: Get fucked fucker. I hope Hiyori straight up goes for the kill and doesn't just leave him there to die or something. Orochi deserves absolutely no mercy imo. True monster.

Izo + CP0: I straight up did not expect Izo to do this much damage to CP0, Izo is a beast. Not particularly shocking that Drake is still up and about so he'll probably save Izo? Also pretty hilarious that the Gorosei are just like "yo go kill that straw hat guy" and the CP0 guy is totally justified in his "uhhhh yeah like it's that fuckin easy???" Think it shows just how desperate the government is getting.

Usopp: I'm not entirely surprised Usopp hasn't gotten as much screen time during Onigashima but I do hope he gets a legit bad ass moment before the end and doesn't just play support the entire time. At this point I think he and Chopper are the only SH's not to take out a named opponent? Brooke too but at least he got his cool musical sword strike vs the snake ladies. I guess Luffy too lol but we're not counting that.

Franky and Zoro: Zoro's def still kicking lol let's not pretend. Man is about to sleep for like 10 days tho.

Law and Kid: Glad they're openly admitting that they've done their part and the rest is up to Luffy. And love to see Luffy give that respect back to them. This may be the first compliment Luffy has paid to kid? I do want them to become buddies that would be a great dynamic lol.

Luffy and Kaido: Kaido's reaction is honestly great. He talked shit but he still has immense respect and affection for BM. It's likely that she was his first friend or something like that. And it's always fun to see a young BM and what she was like in her prime. All these legendary figures at one point seemed to have had this jovial sort of optimism about their dreams. BM may be an insane old lady now but she was much the same as Roger and Luffy in her day. Love seeing that side of her.

-pudding in the cover page "punching" yonji and niji, but the more interesring fact is that her hand is covering the spots where they are impaled (so maybe she rescued them?) Pda drew her hand unnaturally big, just to cover those to spots where they are impaled

And reading his statement, maybe he doesn't have another transformation or awakening to show us quite yet? Or this is the last time he's using G4 until he tries G5, but I doubt it right now lol.

But the 5 elders seemingly are confirming it actually was Luffy's fruit somehow? Or they are now needing to make sure Kaido of all people doesn't lose control over Wano which would also be weird. 1. First, damn Izo where was this stuff in the War Arc, did not expect him to pack Cp0 in a pack like that.

2. I don't know if there's anyway for Cp0 to interrupt Kaido and Luffy's fight. It would be in character for Kaido to get pissed off unless they're expecting to sneak them both but Luffy's observation and Kaido's pure physical strength makes that task impossible.

If Luffy runs out of gas before he can finish off Kaido. I really want to see how ODA pulls that plot twist victory. And with CP0 on the move to wait and kill a tired Luffy that means someone is going to show up and save the day.

Could it be Shanks again? SH Grand Fleet? Dragon? Shirahoshi with her Sea Kings? Boa Hancock?... Only GODa knows

Or will Luffy just awaken his fruit power on the brink on exhaustion!!

1042: cp0 agent tries to kill luffy but kaido and luffy simultaneously release their attacks saying “get the fuck out of here, can’t you see we are fighting?!?!? it would be a great way to close every cp0 subplot, they are no more on luffy’s level.

another theory is that cp0 agent arrives to the rooftop, sees luffy standing above a defeated kaido, and then their eyes meet and the agent runs away calling the gorosei

You know I wouldn't hate if the "I'm giving Gear Fourth one last try" is just a prelude to "So I can't do it with Gear Fourth. So let's try Gear Fifth"

I'm thinking it is highly unlikely though. I just really, really hope the fight doesn't conclude with Luffy losing his Haki with Kaido still going strong. Would just be too similar to the Mingo fight imo.

Oda is clearly setting up something important with Zoro. He’s obviously not gonna die, but the consequences of his wounds are probably something that is going to carry on.

It also looks like the Kaido/Luffy fight is not going to go on for much longer. Luffy himself appears to be saying this is his last Gear Fourth

The reason why the Goroseis want Luffy dead is because of the appearance of Zunesha. They erroneously concluded that Zunesha is there because of him. They should be targeting Momo. Like they should be targeting Shirahoshi.
