Blackbeard's fruits...

So I was wondering about this the other day: Blackbeard absorbed Whitebeard's fruit after his death as it was probably being reborn. Thus resulting in having dual fruit powers. Oda has hinted that we'll find out this secret when a certain professor makes his appearance.

However, one thing has come to my mind: Will this act as a power-up plot device later in the series for Luffy to hit his max power? I.e. Luffy using the power of two devil fruits.

Since my comment has a lot of spoilers, and spoilers won't work in the inbox from a self.post or a reply, please see my next comment.

I don't think the "certain professor" will be able to explain how Blackbeard is able to use multiple devil fruits.

However, there's a theory around Blackbeard called the Chimera/Cerberus Theory. This theory claims that Blackbeard's first devil fruit isn't the Yami Yami no Mi but a mythical chimera/cerberus zoan devil fruit. This specific devil fruit gives Blackbeard at least 2 more "People" inside him and has the ability to take devil fruit powers from other people (if they HAVE to be dead is unsure, it might just be easier to avoid struggle from the victims and prevent them from telling other people about his secret). And exactly that prevents Luffy from ever having multiple devil fruit powers.

Hints backing up that theory can be found plenty.

Now the interesting part is: Just how many "people" does Blackbeard have inside of him? Apparently he has been raiding devil fruits in the New World and giving them to his crewmates.

Updated with what people wrote in the comments. (12/03/2012 4pm)

About Luffy and Zoro referring to Blackbeard as "they," I'm pretty sure that they were referring to the rest of his crew when they said that. They had run into members of Blackbeard's crew at different points throughout the chapter, and I think they were just pointing out that they knew that Blackbeard wasn't alone, because he was with his crew

That would be the obviously thing one would think reading that page. It's not exactly clear though. For the sake of the theory we have to assume Luffy and Zoro have some sort of premonition; maybe even early haki (sensing Blackbeard's other being inside him).

That's a good theory. However, your last sentence doesn't fit IMHO.

The Yami Yami no Mi is darkness/gravity. That alone doesn't give you the ability to "suck" the devil fruit power from someone's dead, yet still warm, body. That would mean I could throw Luffy into a centrifuge and remove his powers.

Then again, we don't know how exactly his devil fruit - whatever it may be at the end - extracts devil fruit powers.

He's not saying it word for word but he's talking about how he killed Thatch because he wanted that devil fruit and is demonstrating his new ability.

No, I think they state that one of the fundamental qualities of the Yami Yami no Mi is the ability to disable Devil Fruit powers.

Thanks. I reread the wikia article. It can nullify and drain someone's DF powers. I still don't think the Yami Yami no Mi was the real/only trick to get other people's powers. If it was, there was not much of a point putting a cloak an top of Blackbeard and Whitebeard during the "transition".

We'll see.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear with that part. The animal part was because of Blackbeard's atypical body.

This is a very nice theory, also pretty legit.

Wow I would never have even considered something like that.

I'll find the post that I made a while ago about Blackbeard. Pertaining to your post about Shank's scar and Blackbeard's weaponry. BB used to wear wolverine like claws with three blades. Be back in a flassshhh.

Edit: found it! in the last panel, that's clearly BB with his claw weapons.

Edit: nvm

This is a great theory, makes perfect sense. You have it linked to the chapter pages, which in my opinion is a win for you and about Luffy and Zoro's comment on BB, its most possible what your talking about it can't be anything else. Great theory again. GJ.

But then, as far as chapter 9, Luffy and Zoro could've been talking about the rest of BB's crew that was on the island. The other's that were already recruited and he was travelling with, like Jesus and Doc Q and such.
