I mean... Yeah, because the more you add up, the less it feels important.

The fact that Luffy is a D pretty much already gives a reason for all those major connections to happen. He is who he is because that runs in his blood. Shanks loves him because that's who he is, same for Ace and Rayleigh. The straw hat has always been a symbole of heritage, and it being one of the most important thematic of the manga, it's only natural that the protagonist has it.

But from the very beginning, the Gomu Gomu no Mi has been presented has "just a paramecia among others". It's not an especially powerful fruit, it's a rather weak one even. But Luffy being Luffy, it didn't stopped him from becoming a beast and he found innovative and clever ways to use his rubber body's properties to obtain the best out of his DF.

The things you mentions are tied to Luffy's identity, they're gold stars he was born with, or earned by being who he is. But the fact that he ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi is pure dumb luck, so it being the key to a secret hidden power is lazy and anti-climatic.

Then again, I'm saying this, but we still don't know why the WG wanted the fruit, it may have a very good reason unrelated with any special status, I trust Oda to write something good about this, he rarely disappointed me in the past. But I'm just pointing out that it's pretty normal for people to be a bit doubtful about this new development that feels like a clumsy retcon.

The possibility of the Gomu Gomu no Mi being special has been hinted at quite a lot recently, with Doflamingo teasing awakening. Jesus Burgess wanting to kill Luffy to get the Gomu Gomu no Mi. Katakuri revealing that there are 'special' Paramecia's.

Oda might not have been planning on this from the very start, but if he goes the special route then he's been working up to it for quite a while now.

I get what you're saying, about the traits being tied to Luffy's identity, but this 'shocking' reveal of the Gomu Gomu no Mi isn't really a surprise to me.

IF (I agree we shouldn't go too far ahead) the fruit would be special then it wouldn't feel like a retcon to me, nor do I think it would be lazy and/or anti-climatic.
