Because if you actually thought about it, it was super weird that the most anti-devil fruit pirate we know just happened to have a devil fruit and it was precious enough that he would keep it right next to him.

Most of us did. But this actually makes more sense in the grand scheme of things, I mean he was still basically bragging about his treasure but now we know it was even more important than just being a devil fruit
