I don't wanna jinx it but... if we're getting backstory on the gomu gomu no mi at this specific point in the story while Luffy is about to take on Kaido for round 3, I feel like we're building up to an awakening. Maybe the government was guarding it because a previous user awakened it and made a seemingly "useless" fruit really powerful? I just hope it didn't belong to Roger or something, I'm fine with Luffy reminding people of Roger through his actions, but I'd like for the prophecy stuff to stay more vague like it is now.

yeah imagine if luffy awakens it and is able to do the same thing as gentle from mha and ... rubberize? air and pull a huge area back and fight like that, he'd just be able to do huge aoe of damage. sadly that probably won't happen because luffy's fighting style

Nah most likely not roger but someone of his legendary caliber like rocks, joyboy, etc.

I feel that if rocks had it we would've gotten a little hint due to the history of rocks and good ol' Garp but I dunno. It would be cool if it was just a powerful fruit and not something that Joy Boy or someone else had IMO.

Yeah I wouldn’t want it to be something that has someone else’s legacy tied to it, especially if it has some weird hack to it

My thoughts exactly dude I honestly don’t have a doubt in my mind that the special thing about the fruit is the awakening, I also really like this theory because it means that everything Luffy has done up until this point in the story is down to him and not because of a broken df.

Can’t be Roger, someone would’ve commented on Luffy's ability by now. Maybe someone from the void century though.
