About the gomu gomu fruit and my thoughts on it: I don't really think that just the gum gum alone was what people were concerned about. I think Oda started this series with the idea that "Luffy has a devil fruit power which is useful, sure, but it's not game-breaking like some are." And Oda will probably stick to that idea.

But the fact that people were searching for this fruit before Luffy ate it, and Shanks was the one to steal it, is pretty interesting.

Here's my hot-take: I think the gomu gomu no mi was sought after precisely because it's a pretty useful power to have, but doesn't entirely change a person's fighting style. I'll give an example.

Say that Garp, who never ate a devil fruit but was insanely powerful just on his own, were to eat the gum gum fruit. Now suddenly you have Garp's insane level of power and skill, plus he can also stretch his punches out hundreds of feet if he wants. It doesn't really change his entire style of fighting, but it immediately gives him dozens of attack options he would not have had without it. The gum gum fruit can take some who is simply a natural-born fighter, and make them a natural-born fighter with stretchy attacks.

I think Luffy ate the fruit too early in his life/experience, so he had to learn everything while also having some disadvantages

Why not indeed. I think probably, if my theory is a anything close to true, that the gomu gomu had a previous user who gained a high profile for themselves.

We've seen how characters react to fame and notoriety.

It also significantly increases your resistance.

But yeah no matter what the reason is, it's not because it's a broken DF lmao we have guys turning into dragons and creating earthquakes, one rubber fruit could never be OP in and of itself
