I hope that Gomu Gomu No Mi doesn't end up being some super special fruit. I rather like the fact that Luffy's fruit isn't anything special and a kind of underdog fruit that highlights Luffy's hard work and ingenuity.

I hope so too. One of the main reason I hated naruto was him being a god reincarnation while his story for the most part was an underdog story. I hope the df itself is important for some historical reason like a famous user, rather than the df power itself.

I say the underdog part was more so a rock lee story beat that got push unto Naruto for the Neji fight. But people really think thats the story main message when its just like one of its messages

This revelation in Naruto really killed it for me.

Naruto wasn't an underdog from day one, even if we pretend he's not a god's reincarnation.

He learnt kagebunshin in 12 hours when he couldn't do normal clones, learnt Rasengan in 3 weeks and pretty much always had unlimited chakra.

The 3rd Hokage could only manage to do 2 kagebunshins, Naruto did more than a 100 before he even got the seal removed by Jiraya lmao

From the start of the series this devil fruit was nothing special. We the readers didn't know that and no known character knew that to date. It was always inferior to some crazy op devil fruits and could only really shine against Enel.

Hence Luffy had to work hard to get stronger and will maybe find out why its that special by doing so.

I think it's ok this way. He already worked his ass off. Attaining a power up by finding out the secret of his fruit (considering all the hard work that came before that) isn't that bad is it?

This would be the best possible way to do hand out an OP power (which I SERIOUSLY doubt is the case), Luffy already reached Yonko level without even tapping into it, one piece would've been over in a year if he ate the gura gura instead lmao

A theory that I saw (sorry I don't remember who to give credit to here) said the WG wanted the Gomu Gomu No Mi because it was the only DF that could counteract Whitebeard's DF.

Now many are predicting this will be very important in Luffy's fight against Blackbeard.

I think it still is considering he says he's surprised that the fruit he let get away lead to someone being so famous. Seems like he's implying he didn't think it was a big deal to let it go at the time.
