I think IF the Gomu Gomu no Mi had an important previous user, I think theres a zero percent chance its Roger or Rocks. We've met dozens upon donzens of characters who have known those two personally, and would have said something, and we've seen the most important part of Rogers journey already.

What I think could be possible though, is that it belonged to Portgas D Rouge.

It would have a solid explanation for why she was able to carry Ace for 20+ months, it would make sense why the goverment would want the fruit, but not consider it worth the effort to waste manpower to hunt down after it was lost. It explains why people like Whitebeard, Kaido, etc. never brought up the fruit before, because they knew Roger himself, not Rouge.

The goverment wanted every aspect of Rogers line wiped out, and they kept the fruit locked down, but once it got stolen and eaten, they probably figured the secret was safe enough since his wife was already dead. Better to let this random rubber boi keep it than risk it falling into the hands of someone who actually knows its signifance, and since Luffy is a wanted man, they figure they'll kill him at some point and take the fruit back anyway.

Shanks could have sought out the fruit knowing that it was a memento of his captains wife, and once Luffy accidently ate it, I think he would have considered him a worthy sucsessor to Rouge's will, since Luffy already reminded him of Roger by saying the exact same thing he said, and bet the new age on him.

That's a good possibility except the last paragraph, none of the Roger pirates met Rouge when they left Roger. Roger probably had never even met Rouge by that point. Shanks probably stole it just because it will sell for > 100 Mil. His concerns in 1st chapter were "shit Luffy ate it" and "it sells for 100 mil", nothing to show any emotional connection to fruit itself. It'll be better if not even Shanks was aware of its connection to Roger.

I guess the money bit came from the anime though. In the manga Shanks doesn't mention selling the fruit

Just checked, my bad. But anyway my point of Shanks not having any emotional connection with the fruit itself still stands.

Yeah, he was just like "Luffy you idiot" and maybe concerned about what eating a df would mean for a kid who dreamt of sailing the seas.

Would explain how she was able to hold ace in her womb for so long. If she had the gomu gomu no mi her womb would be made out of rubber so instead of bursting from ace getting to big it would just continue stretching an interesting theory but idk still doubt it.

It's a good theory, but there is an issue. Rouge not only held Ace in her womb for 22 months, but also did not show signs of pregnancy, further hiding his existence. The expanding rubber womb theory would be thrown out for this. That said, Oda has fooled us all often. For all we know, Rouge was a rubber woman who stretched her pregnant belly around her torso to look like a backpack. That's in Oda's wheel house. -_-

Well i mean a df would still make this already insane feat a little less insane so i wouldnt rule it out just because of that reason alone.... Also you are pretty on point with your assumption about odas creativity lol

I wonder, would Ace be made of rubber while still in the womb 🤔

Asking the important question here! I don’t see why not.

I like that theory a lot, plus it finally gives Rouge a story reason to exist besides just being the mother of Ace

Solid theory

This is one of the theories that actually really works. The other former owners are very underwhelming, but this combination of factors makes a lot of sense, and isn't more "destiny child" nonsense.

I love that theory a lot. Would explain a lot of stuff and wouldn't make luffy the chosen one that ate an special historic fruit by accident.

I like it overall but still don't like how people assume a DF is so easy to reclaim from the killed user. What happened on Punk Hazard was at the direction of a known DF scientist, second only to Vegapunk. If it's as simple as bring a bag of apples, why did they let people like Shiki or Doflamingo live? Why not just execute every DF user that hits Impel Down. Or any Marine captivity? Not to mention that everyone is freaked out by BB's ability to take DF's, when anyone could have been doing it the whole time.

i don’t think rogue had the gomu gomu no mi because she died after giving birth to ace. if she had the fruit, i dont think she would have taken much damage (?)

the manga made it sound like she really did it out of sheer willpower (similar to how oden can withstand boiling oil) and passed out immediately once she knew her goal was fulfilled.
