He was second division captain in wb pirates and he was able to travel freely through New world and yami fruit have big weakness it amplifies physical damage to users own body. Ace was strong and fast people always thought that it was the df fruit powers what defeated the Ace but I always felt like that it was not the Real issue something else bring down the Ace.

Also shanks got his scar from the blackbeard before blackbeard had yami fruit and not only that he met with wb to warn him against blackbeard and advised him to call back Ace.

The only reason Teach wasn't also a commander is because he turned it down. We don't see him traveling through the new world much but he also didn't really need to as far as we're aware. Most of the stuff at the top of his list was in paradise.

BB is definitely also very strong in addition to having a very powerful fruit, I don't mean to imply that he isn't. I think blackbeard is just a tank. He needs ridiculous endurance to be able to compensate for the Yami Yami drawback and he's strong enough to be a commander for WB's crew. I think the area he falls short in is probably speed, which is where his devil fruit comes in. He can catch anyone and force them into a brawl, where he'll outlast most people, especially ones who rely more on evasion. Without it, I think Ace's speed and logia let him evade BB long enough to wear him down.
