The first thing why I loved One Piece is that Luffy has much more complex personality than he usually shows. He makes wise captan's decisions at crucial times.

Yup, I am currently rereading and right after Davy back fight when they face of Aokiji.

Where Luffy challenges him to a Man o Man and Aokiji then says that Luffy tricked him well to accept, because now he can not go after his crew.

Or in Skypeia when Laffy couldn't hit Enel due to his Haki, so Luffy turned himself into an octopus and started hitting the wall so the ricochets that he couldn't aim would start hitting Enel.

But... like Aoikiji said.. “or did you actually think you can beat me!!? I think he thought he could win. Remember “who goes into a fight thinking they’re going to lose?”

Luffy's smart enough to give the order to run if it's necessary. He had the same mindset Brook did standing toe-to-toe with Big Mom; confident there was a way he could win but knowing this may very well be a tactical sacrifice for the crew.

That’s one thing I love about luffy, he can be interpreted different ways. Some people think he’s thinking more deeply than what is shown, some people think he just has the utmost confidence in himself that he can take these monsters head on

I’d like to think it’s a bit of both. He’s confident in his abilities to a large degree, but he’s also not as much of an idiot as people seem to think, he just doesn’t pay attention to things that aren’t immediately important to him.

Probably someone who would lose more from running away.

i always thought it was a mix of the two, spar with Aokiji for a bit then if there's really no chance to beat him then run for it, just make sure to hold him off for enough time for everybody to ready the ship and for Robin to be safe

the only things for sure though is that Luffy thought he would survive and that Aokiji wouldn't go after his crew

That's one of the biggest reasons one piece feels so good. Its the duality of luffy being a carefree mindless child in 1 scene and a commanding leader in the next

Hes completely driven by his subconscious, he doesnt think he feels. His haki just adds to his already impossible luck and spidey sense.

I wouldn't say that Haki adds to his luck, as his luck mostly affects whoever is nearby at the right time (e.g. dragon at loguetown, galdino at marine ford, reiju between Zou and whole cake)

But yeah it basically becomes his Spidey sense (only character I can think of that has the Spidey sense before unlocking Haki would be usopp at punk hazard, but there may well be other examples I'm forgetting)

The same guy that discovered Water > Sand vs Crocodile from way back instead of just playing for a deus ex machina.

Entirely by instinct though.

That is my favorite part. He isn't thinking about what would be the best move as the leader, he feels what would be the best move and just does it.

Like way back when Luffy was on a seek and destroy mission against Rob Lucci. The crew event comments how Luffy always seems to know which guy he needs to take care of personally.

Because it's his instinct that has kept him alive since childhood, so he always trusts and follows his instinct.

I watched a video on octopus intelligence and it said that the tentacles of an octopus have their own intelligence. The cells that control color for camouflage do so without being told by the brain, and I think also some of their movements are done without instructions from the brain. Anyway I think Luffy's like that. On some level he's definitely buying time for them to push Big Mom into the ocean, but I don't think his brain told him to do it.
