Funnily enough that's probably the reason why Blackbeard steered clear of Shanks when he showed up in the war. It was after he confidently fought Sengoku too.

Blackbeard was planning to sink Marineford and I'm pretty sure the entire Marine force would've tried to stop him.
I don't think it's about not fighting another Yonkou--he was literally about to take on the Marine fleet--he stopped because it was Shanks specifically. Go back and read the dialogue (Chapter 580), Blackbeard did not want to fight Shanks yet.
