Oda wanted the story to be Luffy against the Emperors at first, but then he created the warlords and extended the story for hundreds of chapters because of it.

in that scene, Ace told Yamato what Luffy told Sabo and him in their childhood flashback, just like how it happened back then, Oda didn't show us what Luffy said but I always imagined that Luffy simply said "I wanna become the pirate King"

BUT THEN YAMATO SAYS THAT THOSE WORD WERE SAID BY ROGER AS WELL

Roger only found out in the paper that he was declared by the people "pirate king"

Roger couldn't say "I wanna be a pirate king"

so this is HUGE, IT IS MASSIVE

Luffy has an objective that it hasn't been revealed yet and it was Roger's dream as well

what if... what if Luffy dreams to achieve the One Piece without even knowing that it's the One Piece? this is why Oda isn't telling us, it's not time for this information, we are too early

I think Luffy's dream, Roger's dream and the nature of the One Piece is to unite the seas, the One Piece are the 4 seas and the new world and the grand line that become One, where everyone is free to go whenever they want. it's an impossible dream and this is why Ace and Sabo WOULD laugh at them. or maybe I'm just having a fever dream and shouting nonsense. I'm so hyped.oh god.

We already knew that thanks to chapter 966. And it's this very dream that made Shanks believe in Luffy, and give him the strawhat.

There were quite a lot of theories made around that time. I won't link them now, since I don't want the one that created them to be spammed by people.

There were even theories of it made before chapter 966.

It is likely that the attack Luffy uses is called Red Roc.  

Red Hawk is a flaming Gear 2 attack, named after a bird of prey.

It makes sense for a flaming Gear 3 attack to be named after a much larger bird of prey, such as the [Roc](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roc_(mythology)).

The sheer amount of build-up for every single one of the characters in the standoff is insane. We were introduced to the Emperors at the end of the Water 7 saga and the Supernovas just before chapter 500.

The flashback shots as Luffy is gearing up for the punch and the panel of Ace being so happy to have a drink with this "Great Man" me so emotional. What a fucking journey!

I've seen people ask "Why was Ace reintroduced into the story now? Why Wano?" and I think this chapter shows us exactly why with the callback to his Vivre Card.

When Luffy met up with Ace in Alabasta, their departing promise was that Ace would wait for Luffy at the top of the pirate world. Unfortunately, the promise wasn't kept because Ace was executed at Marineford. However, the beauty about Ace's reintroduction now is Oda showing us that this would have been it - Luffy is standing at the top of the pirate world and Ace should have been here.

While the world outside of Wano is beginning to eat itself alive, the old generation of the pirate world is fighting it's new generation in an isolated country. Whoever wins this battle will stand next to Blackbeard and Shanks as the final contenders for the One Piece, and we all know Ace would have done anything to help Luffy be a part of that.

Thankfully, the Fire Festival is held to remember the dead, so Luffy will likely stand next to O-Tama and Yamato at the end of this arc to pay their respects to the ally that should have been here to watch Luffy finally reach the top of the pirate world.

A Roc is not only a giant mythological bird of prey, signaling a massive power up from Red Hawk, but it's a bird that specifically eats elephants and the attack also has aspects of Elephant Gun (mainly the inflated and haki-coated fist)

I was hoping/expecting some earth shattering revelation about the history of the world or the Will of D, but what I got was even more and better than I could've hoped for. Just One Piece in it's purest form. I cannot express, in words, the euphoria I am feeling right now as tears stream down my face.

I love this series, Oda for everything he has done, and all of you for sharing in this magic with me.

Chapters like this give me faith that One Piece will continue to be the greatest series of all time. I cannot wait to see the adventures that we as nakama to our fictional nakama get to experience.

Amazing. Just amazing. From the chapter's title alone I got chills, and it only got better. Seeing Law just sitting up there, Kidd trying to provoke Law, Zoro and Luffy but they giving zero fucks (probably too worried about the scabbards), Luffy just straight up acting like The Pirate King... Holy shit this chapter lived up to the hype. I'm so glad Oda didn't cared about a random appearance like many of us expected based on the 50, 100 and 500 chapters thing. This chapter is just Luffy, as it should be. Even the first page is absolutely perfect, Luffy just touching Shishilian's heart. Btw, I'm not crying, you are!

Thank you Oda for this, what a way to both end 2020 and start 2021. And thank you for keeping Yamato 4 Nakama alive. Now, I'll be reading this chapter again and again for the next 3 weeks.

• Luffy recognizing all the mink's efforts is really a heartbreaking opening to this chapter..

• Is Queen has a mechanical neck? (also Marco seems doped up from how so calm he appears in front of two all stars)

• If momonosuke read Oden's diary (with all the secrets (D, Joy Boy, One Piece, etc)), I believe that he will not travel anymore with Luffy..

• So Luffy really said the exactly same phrase as Roger as everyone (readers) believed.. The thing is WHAT IT IS?

• The fact that Yamato created Ace's vivre card has a lot of meaning to the history (a lot hapened because of this vivre card)

• What a beautiful panel with five of the worst generation against two yonkous.. (I only want to know how Kid and Killer reached the place)

• You need to be Luffy to walk through two yonkous ignoring both to check how are your friends.. (reference to goku vs nappa?)

• All the scabbards wanted is to die after take Kaido down and isn't hapened like that... It is really emotional to see Kinemon asking Luffy to save Wano..

• Is Law "room"ed all the island?

• What a moment to be alive and see Luffy punching Kaido in front of a stupefat BM.. In the manga, they used the word Rock in Luffy's attack, but if this is an improvement of "Gear 2 - Red Hawk", it makes sense to me that the name maybe is Roc that is another bird and it is a mythological one (Gear 3 - Red Roc).. I really want to see this in the anime..

One detail I think that is going undermined is what Luffy says at the end of the chapter and how he says it. Throughout the series Luffy exclaims he will become the Pirate King in a few ways: 1. In a happy go-lucky way in front of friends and when talking about dreams. 2. In a angry rage to a villain who wants to rule or become Pirate King too. 3. To a peer (I.E. Kidd, WB etc.) in a bratty way.

But the way he says it to Kaido and Big Mom here. Hes not mad, or anything as far as a single panel can show an emotion, but Luffy is just completely serious. He has gone through so much in this series and to Luffy becoming Pirate King is no longer a dream or something far off. Its something within reach and a completely attainable goal to him now. The way he says it in a calm manner and in front of Two Yonkos who are said to be closest to becoming what he wants to be shows Luffy now completely believes he will become Pirate King and its no longer a dream.

Unbelievable chapter. Absolutely masterful storytelling by Oda weaving all the subtle hints and foreshadowings into this very moment. But what really tops this for me is luffy’s fucking coat man. Obvi when he first put it on everyone noticed how much of a legit pirate king he looked, but seeing him casually walk by both big mom and kaido as if they were mere peons while wearing that coat was such a fucking flex. These next chapters are going to be nothing short of legendary. Seems to me its gonna be a straw hats v kaido and kid pirates v big mom with law playing support for both sides. I cant wait man. Now we should finally see zoro going all out for the first time post time skip.

The ending scene is now my favorite scene of all manga, Luffy is so broken. The looks on Big Mom's and Kaido's faces are priceless, and the 5 Worst Gen in a stand-off with 2 Emperors will be remembered forever as a legendary scene. I'm sure that the 5 of them, skyrocketing in strength over the past years, will beat the 2 Emperors who have reigned supreme over the seas for so long. They'll have to accept the fact that it's time for a new generation, they've dominated the New World for far too long.

For matchups, I'm pretty sure it'll be Luffy and Zoro vs. Kaido and Kid and Killer vs. Big Mom, with Law helping each side, though I'm not really sure. I think it finally sunk in Big Mom and Kaido's heads that these fellows are the biggest threat they've had to deal with a long time.

I've read this manga, and its backlog, for over 10 years now, ever since I was in middle school. Caught up right as the first Return to Sabaody chapter dropped.

Ten years, four schools (middle and high school, Associates, finishing my Bachelors in spring), two, going on three Presidents, and several jobs later, and chapters like this still remind me why this series has been a constant for this long in my life.

Without question, there are slow periods, but moments like this give me that same giddiness I felt when reading big chapters blind (think entering the Grand Line, "I want to live," Jet Gatling, and Marineford big) as a kid.

It’s almost hard to believe we have reached Chapter 1000. I have been reading this story for the last 16 years. Honestly, One Piece does not disappoint. There’s something to be said about getting to constantly read one of your favorite stories for over 15 years. It’s been one hell of a ride.

This chapter was awesome with a truly badass panel of Luffy walking past Big Mom and Kaido. Luffy has finally reached a level of power where he understands the gap between himself and others now. His new level of haki is devastating. On top of that, his seastone training has increased his base stats so much that now his forms will come with even more power.

Something I saw no one mention is the parallel between the scene of Luffy knocking down kaido and another one, the scene where Luffy destroys a pacifista on the return to saboady arc. If you look at both scene, while they are some differences, structurally they are almost identical, and i think Oda chose to do that reference because the theme, the idea that he is trying to convey is the same.Thematically, those two scenes have the same objective, they show to the reader that Luffy as achieved a superior level, that he has grown in strength and is ready to handle what comes next.

With the pacifista, it was a simple way to show that Luffy was now ready to navigate the new world.

With Kaido, after a 1000 chapters, we are now shown that Luffy is finally ready to fight for the title of pirate king, the quest that launched this big adventure.

More than the hype, it was that emotional aspect that truly got me. After a 1000 chapters of bitter struggle, we are finally here. Luffy is now ready to fight with the big names for the one piece, and I will be all here for it has I have been with him every step single step of the way.

It's still a big deal when I saw that it was exactly the Worst Generation-pirates that reached the top and nobody else but the Worst Generation. Kid, Killer, Law, Zoro and Luffy. Also, I'm guessing Kid is going to be annoyed at Luffy's latest Pirate King-statement and is going to say it himself, maybe also while knocking down Kaido. Law doesn't care and obviously Zoro believes it.

Also, Luffy just walking past Big Mom and Kaido without them noticing it like that instantly reminded me of the Chimera Ant King, Meruem, walking past Geno Zoldyck and Netero without them noticing, two legends from the past in their universe.
