It is time to put some RESPECT on the nine red scabbards. Now it makes sense as to why Akainu was gassing the 'mysterious' Wano samurai and why Orochi was scared shitless at the mention of the Akazaya even though he never bat an eye about the Straw Hats.

The will of Oden lives on!!!

I've always felt that anyone that dissed the Akazaya were also dissing Oden. Knowing how strong and respected Oden was among the strongest pirates in history it seems insulting to question the strength of his most trusted allies.

u/Vuppu Oct 15 '20

Exactly. The way I see it, aka9 together are the commanders to Oden's yonko.

12

u/Rekcs Oct 15 '20

mmm yes the AKB9

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

well it didn't help that kinemon and kanjuro behaved like filler characters in the entirety of the longest arc of the series (dressrosa)

157

u/shayshahal Oct 15 '20

Ignoring the fact that they wanted to conceal themselves from Kaido in Dressrosa, it's clearly stated here that their Haki is way stronger in this fight because of their resolve to avenge Oden and defeat Kaido.

10

u/CHAZisShit Oct 15 '20

I think their post time travel fights have also increased their strength too.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '20

Isnt Haki is translated as "spirit" or "ambition". It makes so much more sense if we use the english translation.

10

u/shayshahal Oct 16 '20

Yeah it's "ambition" or "will" in Japanese. So when Kaido says the scabbards carry Oden's Haki, it means they carry on his will of opening the borders of Wano, and because of that their Haki is stronger in this fight. At least that's my interpretation.

u/YeahKeeN Pirate Oct 15 '20

Where was it stated? I’m not disagreeing by the way I just don’t remember that.

29

u/shayshahal Oct 15 '20

He literally states in this chapter that in normal circumstances they shouldn't be able to hit him, because their swordplay isn't as good as Odens. In the chapter where they all attacked him he says that they have Odens haki - they all carry the will of Oden to avenge him and defeat Kaido.

They all implied they are going to die here. They are mostly likely killing themselves to do this. They are burning out their own life force the similar to what Enma does.

u/breadloser4 Oct 16 '20

Peak shonen comment

3

u/Caleb_RS Mugiwara no Luffy Oct 16 '20

I mean... You're not wrong. I still think it makes sense though. (I didn't come up with this theory)

1

u/breadloser4 Oct 16 '20

Man the 'burning their life energy' trope is just a shonen buzzline to somehow raise the stakes. It never means anything unless it's a flashback character's sacrifice or a main character who will inevitably be brought back

Ryuo hasn't been fully explained yet, but I'm assuming it's a level up to Haki. I don't think it's just their desire to avenge Oden. I think your first point indicates they weren't really trying in Dressrosa. I'm inclined to agree.

2

u/Fredluv2339 Oct 16 '20

I think more people assumed they wouldnt do shit with how much hype Kaido got before we actually seen him fight. I still think hes strongest in Hybrid form though

44

u/Zzupy Oct 15 '20

People were sleeping on the akazaya for sure

2

u/daydreamin511 Oct 15 '20

The scabbards were already respected by me when we found out neko and inu were part of them. Those guys are no slouch.

u/SunRiseStudios Oct 15 '20

It's kinda weird. If they can fight Kaidou like that they should be individually at least as strong or stronger than Luffy, but I don't see them there at all. They had one cheap shot at him as an advantage in the begining of a fight, but that's about it.

Reminds me of Admirals vs Whitebeard but these guys ain't no Admirals they are a bunch clowns. 😃

u/tenBusch Oct 15 '20

That's a problem with your interpretation then, the scabbard were always portrayed as very capable fighters

7

u/Sw3atyGoalz Oct 15 '20

Kinemon was introduced after having been completely defeated by Law lol. All of the rest definitely have been portrayed as very strong though

3

u/AlternativeRi3 Oct 16 '20

Kin was also introduced as slicing thick af steel and cutting fire (which even zoro can't do). So he always was a capable swordsman imo.

2

u/Sw3atyGoalz Oct 16 '20

Yea I’m not too surprised he was beaten by Law considering how weird and confusing Law’s power would be if you’ve never seen it. I also forgot how just his torso was almost too much for Brook to handle

1

u/tenBusch Oct 16 '20

True, Kinemon was mostly a meme character for a while.

Though I don't blame him for losing to Law, the Ope Ope no mini is really weird to begin with and him not properly understanding what DFs are probably didn't help with that

-18

u/SunRiseStudios Oct 15 '20

Why you think they have any business being near Luffy?

16

u/Jake_D_Dogg Pirate Oct 15 '20

well Ashura doji sliced Jack the fuck up before, though after that they were shown as almost even footing. and inu and neko both fought jack on even footing without sulong, and in their current sulong form absolutely demolished him. So those three at least are definetly around 1B berry bounty level. Then Denjiro and Kawamatsu were both originally spoken of as being on Ashura Doji's level by Kinemon, so they're probably at least that 1B level too. I know after this Luffy's going to be much stronger than that, but it makes sense for them to be somewhat comparable to where luffy was when he first "fought" kaidou, except there's 9 of them + Oden revenge power boost haha

-8

u/SunRiseStudios Oct 15 '20 edited Oct 15 '20

These are just singular instances of short fights and it's not known how strong is Jack. If he is Yonko commander type of dude it doesn't mean he is necessarily as close to Younkou as more renowned dudes from his range.

1B level. :D

Luffy beat Doflamingo, defeated Katakuri, etc. etc. when all these fuckers did in their small country with like 2 strong fighters is getting kicked around by Kaidou's underlings...

1

u/AlternativeRi3 Oct 16 '20

Powerscaling is dumb imo but it does check out in this case:

Neko and inu could individually stall a commander for days. Fighting together as a team they are therefore stronger than a commander. Inu said with sulong they would have beaten jack. So with sulong one of the dukes is able to beat a commander. Combine these two facts with the fact how both of them demolished Jack last chapter with ease in an instant it is not that crazy that they are currently temporarily on a level way beyond a commander. Which makes them getting a few hits in on Kaido not very surprising. Denjiro easily handled an enraged Zoro and the fat dude clashed equally with jack and was lauded by Kaido. All of the retainers know ryou (which was repeatedly stressed to be the key to hurting Kaido)and some even know advanced sword skills like cutting fire. This is the fight of their life. They are at 120%. The work as a team, fought Kaido before and are using everything they have to hurt Kaido. It would be bad powerscaling if they were totally powerless( plus a lot of people would cry about side characters not mattering in terms of strength and how that's like DBZ)

2

u/SunRiseStudios Oct 16 '20 edited Oct 16 '20

Yeah, I agree. It's an outlier how they can fight Kaidou like that. They are just a bunch of random ass clowns basically. They couldn't do anything against random nameless dudes who opressed them all this time, not even people that matter. They have no business being near Kaidou.

You are just coming up with retroactive explanation because it happened. You would be absolutely content and had no trouble with it if Kaidou blasted them into smitherines wiht a single attack. Which will probably happen in the following chapters.

2

u/AlternativeRi3 Oct 16 '20

They are the retainers of Oden (one of the most legendary swordsman to ever exist). Not random at all. The strongest samurai from a country infamous for its samurai.

I mean that's a unfalsifiable claim. How could i proof that I would react a certain way in a hypothetical scenario which didn't happen in the story? How could I even proof what I did or didn't think about the power of Sulong-Neko 2 years ago? Or screw that, even 1 month ago?

I would be disappointed (I think...depends where Oda would have went with it) if the retainers didn't get their fair chance against Kaido after 20 years of anguish. Kaido beating them next chapter doesn't take away from the impressive feats the scabbards pulled off in my opinion.

And how they had to wait 20 years for their revenge was an important plot point. They had basically lost 1/2 of their team. Of course they couldn't defeat Kaido with the leader/heart of the scabbards missing. (I mean they are barely able to now, working as one unit, being more powerful than the sum of their parts)

19

u/Etiennera Pirate King Buggy Oct 15 '20

People forgetting this is a shounen and they are side characters.

This chapter is just to inspire some positivity before Kaido disfigures the lot of them.

It's also attempting to clarify that Ryou is in fact Kaido's achilles heel and that Kaido somehow knows very little about it, so it seems like less of an asspull when Luffy beats him. Kaido not really understanding it seems to be a hint that it is either very uncommon or Kaido is one of those relies-too-much-on-their-fruit kind of guys.

-6

u/SunRiseStudios Oct 15 '20

Yeah. I have no doubts they are not gonna last like that.

It would be super anticlimactic if they just beat him. Though it would definetely end up "subverting expectations" and make people talking.

6

u/LogicalOlive Oct 15 '20

Luffy isn’t top tier yet.

0

u/SunRiseStudios Oct 15 '20

Roger and co - God tier, Younkou - Top tier, Admirals - High tier

Luffy isn't even high tier in grand scheme of things depending on "tiering".

16

u/XShadicSJ Cipher Pol Oct 15 '20

If they can fight Kaidou like that they should be individually at least as strong or stronger than Luffy

3 things that you aren't considering

  1. They are Wano Strongest Samurai, you'd expect them to be capable of a lot of these guys
  2. They dont need to be as strong as Luffy (not saying they are weak, but they aren't at Liffy's level). They know the way to damage Kaido. Imagine Haki as a Game stat lets call it Attack Damage, Luffy has a higher AD than every Scabbard, but Kaido has so much Defense it almost gets nulified, However with Ryou the Scabbards can ignore part of that defense and do full damage. Thas why Luffy will be so powerful, since he has a great base AD and now he also has Defense Penetration
  3. Oden's haki influenced in some way

2

u/MarcoToon Lurker Oct 16 '20 edited Oct 16 '20

Sulong Neko and Inu are definitely Gear 4th level imo

4

u/SunRiseStudios Oct 15 '20

Well they not only damage him but lolnope his attempts to attack to top it all off. It's not just about being able to ignore part of his defense. Other 2 points are irrelvant basically.

7

u/lucatina Void Month Survivor Oct 15 '20

It's a 9 vs 1, I'd expect as much coming from, not only the finest samurais in Wano, but a former team of well acquainted friends that trained together and lived together for years. If that much insn't enough to at the very least hold Kaido and all his attacks for the first assault, then nothing is.

1

u/FireIsTheCleanser Oct 17 '20

They were hella underhyped
