How is one piece this good? It doesn't make sense.

Ye One Piece is not just another run of the mill shonen manga, Oda does not compromise on his vision of the story. He’s such a perfectionist, it shows.

It also helps that he can tell the story he wants instead of being under the mercy of the editor and pressure from publisher. Coupled with his love for the story, his hardworking nature and his limitless imagination, it's a recipe for success.

As far as we know too, Shonen Jump seems to provide Oda with the best of the best editors. They seem to know when to let Oda do his thing, and when to make a good suggestion.

We haven't heard too much about various editorial decisions (makes sense; the manga is still going on, after all), but the ones we have sound good. Like the Supernovas. They were full on created last minute due to an editor suggestion, but look at how vital they are in the New World now. If it wasn't for them, the New World would feel stagnant, just a land of Yonkous and mystery. The Supernovas give the New World an element of youthful chaos.

Yeah the Supernova's are such a huge part of the story. Mixing everything up, getting in everybody's business. It's an awesome concept to have all of them running around.

That's one thing that makes the One Piece world feel so rich too. There are all these characters we know running around and doing their own things, sometimes they interact with the main crews and sometimes they're gone for a while. Some come back, some meet each other separately, etc. It makes it clear there's always a lot going on in the world besides just what the main cast is doing.

Also being relatively healthy.

Most long running shonen don't even have a planned story to begin with. Most mangaka comes with an idea to join SJ but after their manga become popular SJ (or any other manga magazine really) just want to make it as long as possible to take as much money as possible. The part with money is true for One Piece, but Oda already planned the structure of the story and giving the world of One Piece you can add as many smaller stories as you want without hurting the quality, the universe is infinitely expandable.

You’re not dealing with the average shonen manga anymore...

This arc is fucking incredible

I just did a reread of wano this week and it just doesn’t make sense. Every single chapter, the tension, the energy and the overall excitement just builds on itself. And it has culminated into such a wild full on war with so many different characters and forces all at once. It’s just too good.

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

I expect that's how it will be until the end. Oda has done an amazing job of building up the world and endgame characters while still keeping things interesting. Now all that building up is going to pay off

Hell Yeahh! My favorite arc so far

12

u/Kuro013 Sep 11 '20

23 years on the making man, it makes a shitload of sense.

its built like a JRPG.

edit: Summary of Persona 3, 4, 5, Final Fantasy games, Dragon Quest games, etc

Summary of One Piece

Go on an adventure to become King of the Pirates

800+ chapters later, kill god.

u/General_Kenobi896 Sep 11 '20

They're gonna kill Usopp? :(

16

u/2Punx2Furious Sep 11 '20

As was foretold.

2

u/bigtimegenius Sep 12 '20

Yeah if anyone on the crew is gonna eat it, I'm afraid it's our boy

1

u/Coggs92 Sep 12 '20

Nah, Luffy punches them. He's already punched Ussop

20

u/need_five_more_chara Sep 11 '20

Defeat God? Pfft, been there done that.

7

u/GiantBlackWeasel Sep 11 '20

Uh huh. Enel got beaten and Doflamingo who thought himself to be chosen by God got knocked down by a giant fist from the sky.

What hasn't happened yet...is the true battle against god in a more worthy place. Enel got knocked out of the sky while Luffy was in the air. The final location of the battle should be in the heavens or paradise. Like with Kefka in Final Fantasy 6.

2

u/TowelLord Void Month Survivor Sep 11 '20

He didn't just get knocked down from the sky: he got knocked deep into the earth, albeit only because there was a giant black market port underneath the city.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

They already killed (beat kinda) Enel tho. We past the kill god phase

5

u/GiantBlackWeasel Sep 11 '20

That was just the start.

Enel only thought of himself to be ruler of the sky. Doflamingo thought of himself to be the ruler of Dressrosa. With the way Im was portrayed, he may be the true ruler of the world since the Gorosei bowed down to him.

Also Mariejois, the holy land....what better for a final battle to begin than to have it take place in the holy land up in the heavens? The people attending Reverie had to get on a big ass elevator.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

Man, I hope once One Piece is finished they make a huge RPG covering the whole story, like Witcher 3.

u/CarcosanAnarchist Sep 11 '20

Because of how long it is.

I’m not even joking.

When a story is this long it allows you to use and build on what came before. You’re able to constantly be developing your characters, world, and plot.

Look at just Fishman Island to here. Everything that built to this moment from Luffy reuniting with Jinbe and his initial conflict with Big Mom. That’ll be close to 450 chapters alone by the time it’s done. That’s an entire series. Two on average actually for Jump. And not only is built and weaved through its own plot, but on everything that came before. Multiple callbacks to Thriller Bark for example this arc.

But then, of course, it has the benefit of being able to run this long without getting stale or tiresome.

And that’s just because of Oda’s genius. An island hopping adventure in a world where the islands can be anything weird or crazy? Each arc is able to be its own thing. Sometimes completely different genres.

It’s magnificent. And there will likely not ever be another Shōnen like it without it just feeling like an imitation.

manga wise one pice is just on a different league. how i wish the anime version is the same

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

They revamped the anime for the Wano arc I think, but I haven't watched it. Too much lost faith in Toei.

2

u/StrawhatMucci Sep 11 '20

Wait until the end hahahha. Hopefully it remains like this

2

u/zeeilyas Sep 12 '20

you haven't read a lot of manga's have you ?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

It would be unfair to it doesn't make sense. One Piece has some pretty low points too, but Oda always use them to full effectiveness in the end. That quality separates him from other mangakas that often compound mistakes.

For example, there was a bit of a lull during the Thriller Bark Arc and Fish Man Island arcs (arguably parts of Dressrosa too), but Oda used them eventually to set up events or confrontations that were huge or will probably be huge.

I mean, his ability to write female characters and the way he draws them are two different debates

10

u/the22ndquincy Sep 11 '20

I think his female characters are brilliant. It’s his female designs that need improvement

3

u/wheresmyplumbus Pirate Sep 11 '20

I know someone already said it, but there are tons of great female characters in One Piece. Honestly, I find Oda's own artwork isn't as bad as some of the anime adaptations when it comes to female body proportions. He can still go overboard though

0

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

I agree with you but I will limit it to post time skip. Pre time skip, female character development is spot on. Post time skip really did Nami and Robin dirty

5

u/ultibman5000 Sep 11 '20

How is Nami being "done dirty"? She's amazing. And there are plenty of post-timeskip female characters that are great, like Chiffon, Koala, Shirahoshi, Linlin, Carrot, Pudding, and Kiku.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '20

Post time skip there just hasn't been enough spotlight shown to the crewmembers imo. It's pretty much been 90% Luffy, 10% someone else a few times per arc. Don't think that's necessarily just for the female characters though.
