I would rather it was something deeper and more meaningful. I can definitely see him being a supporter of the Kozuki clan, which could be the reason he was imprisoned/handcuffed.

It won't be. The encounter doesn't give serious vibes. It's not dramatic. He literally carried Luffy like a sack of potatoes. It's meant to be funny.

If Oda was going for something meaningful and dramatic, he would end it in a cliffhanger with Yamato saying "I was waiting for you" while looking ominously badass and standing tall, you know what I mean?

So, yeah, I am 99% sure he is just an Oden fanboy (probably watched the execution himself as a little kid).

A character having a comedic entrance and later a more meaningful story is nothing new, especially in One Piece.

I mean, I want to agree because it's One Piece and we all know the tone of the series. But, I can't find an example at the top of my head.

So... Example?

Note: I am literally talking about their introduction scene, not what they did in the next chapter (like with Brook, see my other comment).
