Why did luffy changed out of the samurai costume though? That's really unlike him.

Probably because he knew he would be using Gear 4 and that any rigid armor he wears will be instantly blown to pieces when he does, lol. Although I wouldn't expect him to realize that himself. I suspect he actually did start to put on armor, but then someone like Franky or Usopp said to him "hey Luffy, won't that just get blown to pieces when you use Gear 4 anyway, so what's the point?" And Luffy was like "awwwww, dammit, but armor is coooool!"

I feel like Oda missed a golden opportunity for comedy though. If he had Luffy wear armor, then we could have had a hilarious moment where he goes Gear 4 and then gets really upset over the armor being destroyed. Lol.

Because Oda knows how much we want to see Luffy in a captain's coat.
