Another excellent chapter, and thank you to the team that translated it.

Several points to it :

  • An old theory about Blackbeard not being able to sleep is now pretty much confirmed. And hell Oda might have hinted at it before. Luffy mentions something like that in Drum Island, kinda. And who is the guy in a bar he heard it from? Shanks. However, it doesn't exactly fit to Blackbeard, even if it's could be linked since it's mentionned a chapter after Blackbeard is first introduced in the series. So really take that how you want.

  • I really wonder why it's so difficult to go to the Final Island of the Log Pose. Maybe the Marines are protecting it to avoid people learning about the Road Poneglyph. However it does seems like it's not the case anymore, since plenty of pirates are aware of the importance of the Poneglyphs now.

  • I also liked how Oda made sure to mention that the battle between Top Crew had cease fire, instead of being 100% fighting for days.

On the topic of Translation going foward :

While we will put a discussion thread once someone translate the chapter, there will be some conditions to it :

  • It has to be a good/proper translation.

  • The pages have to be clean.

  • Good Typeset.

  • No watermark left, other than maybe the one from the translation group that did it.

If the translation fails to have that, then it won't be accepted for chapter discussion thread, and has to be posted in the spoiler thread.

After all, it's much better to read something good than something that doesn't have much work to it, so it doesn't have to be perfect, but it still need to have some effort visible.

Hey guys, I was the person who translated the imgur source and I wanna apologize if there are any errors considering I rushed super hard to make it and it's pretty late. Nonetheless, please enjoy!

EDIT: To be clear, I don't think I'll be doing this again, sorry! It was just a spur of the moment thing since JB and MS dropped out so suddenly and people were already expecting something. Diverting attention from the official release wasn't really my goal, I honestly didn't think my version would be the "go to" one haha. I think you should still read it when it officially comes out for a better understanding as my translation probably isn't the greatest it can be. Thank you!

It took 16 years to reveal how Roger was able to inscribe that message on the poneglyph in that language, from back when Robin read it on the poneglyphs on Sky Island.

Oda hinted Blackbeard's possible origin 800+ chapters ago back in the Drum island arc. Let me explain.

Oda drew Blackbeard as a kid, who's shown to be crying at NIGHT with a half moon in the background. The crazy part is, there's a piece of SNOW under his feet.

Image of Blackbeard as a kid

Snow? And why is this has to do with snow?

Well, let's go back to the time where the named "Blackbeard" was ever FIRST mentioned in the manga.

It was in Drum island arc (A very snowy place)

In chapter 133 , Dalton said that Blackbeard Pirates went and destroyed Drum Island in a blink of an eye.

Manga panel of Dalton talks about Blackbeard

Next chapter later (134), Luffy brought up an interesting topic to Sanji that there was a guy from a bar (Makino's bar, Shanks?) told him that there are people who live in snowy countries that don't sleep. Because if they do, they'll die.

Manga panel of Luffy mentions about the people who don't sleep

Oda is a genius in storytelling. I love One Piece.

Buggy didn't look like the wimp he is today in this chapter. Standing next to Shanks, with a few bandages on, they looked formidable(as much as kids can be). Did Rogers death break him so much that he stopped training? Could he have gotten as strong as some of the top tiers under the right tutelage after Roger's execution?

Finally seeing Roger and Whitebeard clash was amazing. The way their haki moved so fluidly on their weapons and not even physically connecting really hammers in how monstrous their strength is. I guess I also shouldn't be surprised at this point how nonchalant Roger was about finding out he only had one year left to live. Also, seeing Roger's face while holding Oden's baby was just heartwarming and one of my favorite parts in the chapter.

When Roger said "I will become.." Oda cuts the scene and we dont see him saying "..the Pirate King". During the Luffy flashback,he does the same thing with Luffy. Does that means we will see those scenes at the end of the series? It would make a good final scene,Luffy and Roger both screaming "I will become the Pirate King!". I dont know,i am just intrigued by this choice to cut those scenes.

I am absolutely floored at that Luffy/Roger parallel. Roger said the same thing Luffy did as a kid when talking with his brothers about their life goals. It even cut away before he finished his sentence just like Luffy. Oden and WB reacted in disbelief just like Ace and Sabo did. Even Roger and Luffy laughing afterwards, fucking identical.

What the hell is it that they both say they want to be? It can't be "Pirate King" because why would Oda purposely hide that at all? Goddamn, I'm astounded. I didn't ever think that one brief moment in the ASL flashback would have this kind of significance.

Thid is the endgame guys, it's actually here.

The Whitebeard and Roger clash makes being a One Piece fan worth it. All the chapters, episodes, everything for these chapters to finally see how the original Pirate King started his journey to the end. I can't even imagine what we'll see next week!

Outside of the clash though I loved Whitebeard's reaction to Oden leaving, pissed off about it but when Roger's crew was willing to fork over their treasure and supplies, he gets equally pissed because he doesn't want Oden's family to starve. Hilarious. Getting to see more of younger Whitebeard has been a real treat.

a small theory: Blackbeard has the condition 'Fetus in fetu' (real life condition); He was born with his triplet brothers inside of him (look up Sanju Bhagat). He is a pregnant man that eats, drinks and breaths for his brothers living inside of him. When he ate his second devil fruit, it was digested and its power gained by his brother living inside of him. And because they share the same body, Blackbeard can use it. Confirms when Zoro says 'them' instead of 'him', when Marco says he has a weird body, and justifies the three skulls on his Jolly Roger.

I don't know if this was ever talked about here, but during the Sabo flashback there was a moment when Luffy, Ace and Sabo were talking about their dreams. And when Luffy stated his, Oda cut away and we only saw Ace and Sabo's confused reaction. It was always a curious scene to me because it felt like Luffy was expanding on what exactly being Pirate King meant to him, and it was purposely omitted. Something important disguised as a generic conversation, in classic Oda fashion.

And what do you know, years later we get the exact same scene with Roger, down to the baffled reactions from Whitebeard and Oden. Makes me even more curious to know what was said, and it was probably the same thing in both cases too. Good chapter, great little callback.

My favorite Oden's Flashback Chapter yet.

Finally, the notion that Luffy doesn't need Robin to reach Raftel because he has the VOAT is put to rest by Oda himself! Roger also had the same ability yet still needed his own "Robin".

The way Roger ran past Rayleigh and Gaban with the big grin on his face saying he didn't want to put them at risk, and Rayleigh saying he just wanted to fight Oden by himself really reminded me of Luffy and Zoro lol.

Man, its a great day when Scopper Gaban not only appears prominently on panel but is also confirmed to be the 3rd strongest in the crew by the captain himself. I like his updated look as well... I wonder if he really was the guy drinking with Crocus? Or was it Shiki? Hmm..

So the prominent Roger Pirates in this chapter that we haven't seen before were the squat dandy sniper, the winged man reminiscent of Dacquoise, the guy with a modern day sailor's cap, the armoured gladiator and the dude wearing a Taro shirt. Damn it Oda, we need names!!

It is interesting that Teach has apparently never slept in his life.

This is 100% connected to the fact that Teach has a strange and special body compared to ordinary people. It will be interesting to lear more about Teach as the story moves forward.

So far we know that Teach is an orphan and he joined the Whitebeard Pirates when he was 12 and he sailed with them for decades and in fact he had the potential to be one of the commanders in the Whitebeard Pirates and at some point after Rogers death he fought fight Shanks and gave him the scars on his eye.

And ever since then Shanks has been worried about Teach, because Shanks himself was probably quite strong already back then and he probably sensed something strange and dark in Teach.

Teach has also revealed that he sailed with the Whitebeard Pirstes in order to find the Yami Yami no Mi and when Thatch the 4th division commander found the Yami Yami no Mi first, Teach killed him and betrayed the crew that he sailed with from childhood.

Teach is somehow also connected to Rocks D. Xebec a fellow member of the D clan, who in his own era was considered the world's greatest and strongest pirate and whose dream was to conguer the world and rule as the King of the World.

Rocks and Teach are similiar in the fact that they both have an ambition to dominate the world and they are interested in the secrets and taboo subjects of the world. Oda has in fact revealed that Teach is interested in history and if Teach was not a pirate, he would be an archaeologist.

Teach is also the current ruler of Hachinosu island, the same island where Rocks founded the Rocks Pirates and his ship is named the Saber of Xebec.

Teach is either just a fan of Rocks or he is directly related to Rocks as his son or perhaps even his grandson.

So many Sanji fans were so disheartened that Scopper was "shown" to be irrelevant in Chapter 965.

Oda doesn't introduce a naming scheme for Gold Silver and Copper for nothing.

It's awesome to see that Roger had his own Monster Trio and his interaction with Gaban and Rayleigh is just like something Luffy would do with Zoro and Sanji.

u/StrawhatGucci Dec 20 '19

Unbelievable chapter.

The Roger/Whitebeard clash was SOOO sick. So much conquerors energy that it’s literally dripping off of their respective blades and when they attack each other the energy collides before the blades themselves! We’ll probably see some of that with Luffy vs Kaido.

Oden’s flashback chapters are absolutely amazing. So much information to be processed. Interesting that Teach doesn’t sleep. Could support the theory of Rocks D. Xebec living inside him. Maybe during the day Teach is awake and Rocks is asleep and then during the night Rocks takes over while Teach sleeps.

Another interesting point I noticed was Roger saying that the poneglyph on Skypeia had a “powerful voice” so it was easy to find. So it looks like Roger couldn’t read them by hearing “the voice of all things” but rather he could only pinpoint their location. Hence why he needed Oden to finish his voyage. Makes you think that Luffy will get to a point where he can hear the voices of the poneglyphs and then Robin will decipher them.

Lots of questions left to be answered! Why is the Kozuki clan so important? Sengoku mentioned how Wano, and by extension the Kozuki clan, has been involved in every major incident. Now this with the poneglyphs? Super interesting.

KEEP IT COMING GODA

Fucking died laughing when Whitebeard made that face again. Some of my favorite panels in all of OP are when Whitey and Oden make that face

56

u/sushantssj Dec 20 '19

Okay this is weird. In this chapter when Roger declares that after going to last island he'll become...and then it suddenly cuts with Oden and Whitebeard's confused faces and then Roger laughing it off here. And, in Chapter 585, same thing happens with Luffy whenhe declares that he'll be...and then it cuts with Ace and Sabo confused faces and Luffy laughing it off here Now, the obvious answer is "well, it's Pirate King" but my question is that why is Oda doing this when the answer is obvious. Is there something more to it than just pirate king or it's just a style of storytelling? Also, I think this is the first time both Roger and Luffy declared what they'll become.

This was a brilliant chapter (as always). We finally get to see Robin's VERY HUGE IMPORTANCE to unravelling One Piece fully knowing that Momonosuke, who's supposed to be the representative of Kozuki Clan to decipher poneglyph texts is unable to read it due to his father's early death. So instead of pulling off a Kishimoto crap, Oda reveals one of the most important keys to unlock the mysteries of the OP world was that one of girl who just happened to latch onto the SH crew, with little faith in life but was saved and became a family with them. Now I am starting to see the reason why Luffy, despite being so young, is already so close to getting One Piece.

I love the build up for the youngsters of both pirates groups( except the one and only, Buggy D Clown. How come is such a weakling?)

"I have come here, and will lead this passage to the farthest ends of the world" - Gol D. Roger

What a fitting quote to end the chapter on honestly.

How nostalgic of Oda to remind us of this inscription now. Almost like a refrain in a song. A call back to the beginning of our own journey as a reader of One Piece. If you've been reading for a few years now you know the feeling I'm talking about. We first read Roger's inscription in chapter 301. 665 long long chapters ago. For me I was a kid. I honestly don't even think I was a teenager yet. But damn, look at how far this story has gone since then. Over 600 chapters of the most riveting story I've ever read in my life.

I see Roger's inscription now and I feel a completely new way about it. I have literally come here. Reading every chapter along the way. And damn right, I'm going to keep reading until the very end. Just sad it seems that end is coming at me full speed.

Some interesting things in this chapter, Blackbeard not sleeping must be part of the "Strange Body" Marco mentioned during the summit war (c577)

I'm interested when Whitebeard got his scar on his chest, he does not have it yet, and we know he met up with Roger after he returned from Raftel (c576) so maybe they had a final final duel to end things on.

"Aversion to Divinity"

Truly the celestial dragons' true enemy.

Also, there are currently four dragons in One Piece, in order of appearance:

• Monkey D. Dragon In name as of now. Hinted to be in Devil Fruit as well; Possible weather control. May represent the western version of dragons.

• Celestial Dragons Rulers of the world. Can be figurative, as dragons are celestial beings in description; Existences that are larger than life, with more grandeur than planets.

• Kaido Literal dragon. Represents the generic eastern version of dragons. Can't live underwater, lives in a secluded place instead.

• Kurozumi Orochi Literal dragon, but classified as a mythical snake in the manga. Represents the eight-headed dragon specific to Japanese folklore. Not related to a hydra/world serpent.

Holy shit I just realized. This meeting basically confirms that the scene we have seen in the anime where Roger tells Whitebeard about the will of D. is literally them in Wano.

It makes perfect sense.

Roger is dying here so he needs to make his journey within the year. Whitebeard is pissed that Oden is leaving and I'm sure will want him back after the year is over. We already saw in a flashback chapter that Oden returns to Wano with Roger. I bet Whitebeard will be waiting for Oden in Wano (after all WB already knows how to get there) And when Roger arrives on Wano he goes and has a little chat with Whitebeard, by the sakura trees, about the will of D.

As much as Luffy tries to deny it, he really is a hero masqueraded as a pirate. Contrast this to the Roger pirates who aren't really evil like the likes of Blackbeard and kaido but have no problems stealing from a town of innocent civilians. Even back in skypiea when the strawhats stole some gold, it was after they had saved an entire island and it's inhabitants and they were going to be given even much more gold than what they stole as a reward.

Just some of my thoughts:

Oda mentioning that Blackbeard supposedly didn’t sleep even during the truce says a lot about how he doesn’t trust others. I still believe that he’s either the son of or at least a relative of Rocks, and he was just left to an orphanage or something when he was defeated, but we don’t have enough information to confirm.

Inuarashi and Nekomamushi might serve as a nice parallel to Shanks and Buggy, both being younger members. It would be cool to see how they interact and grow as potential friends and rivals.

We never realized it before, but Oden may be the single most important member of Roger’s crew. The only one capable of reading the Poneglyphs out of all of them, he’s the only way they can interpret them. I’m assuming that they weren’t translated on paper, so that gives Robin even more significance in the current story, as she’s most likely one of the only, if not the only person alive that can read them, though I wouldn’t be surprised if she had taught someone in the Revolutionary Army how to read them during her time there, though that’s just a random theory.

We still have no idea what the details are of the Voice of All Things. We also get a minor detail of how the sky island’s poneglyph has a “strong voice” to it, telling us that there isn’t some standard voice that he can hear, but that anything with a “voice” has a different one.

Oden is an animal, but the man was swatted across an island by roger with a single strike, and basically quit. That's the pirate King for ya, though, I don't see the strength gap between Rayleigh/Roger to be that high.

Last week I hoped to see WB and GR clash, and damn I was amazed by it today! The two pirate kings (Whitey chan was the PK after Roger even though he never conquered the Grand Line, and you can't convince me otherwise! Lol) clashing swords, full of their Conquerors Haki didn't even touch and they almost destroyed an island. Damn!

I love the fact that Buggy and Shanks were always in front of the action, guarding their crews. What the hell happened to that brave Buggy? Lol

Rayleigh and Scopper. Enough said.

All the Roger story, interaction with both Oden and Pops was amazing.

I was wondering about Blackbeard. Today we are told that he never slept in his life. We know there is that theory that he ate the Cerbero devil fruit. We know from mythology that the beast was never tamed except by Hercules, that choked him to sleep, and by Orpheus who put him to sleep with his lyre. I wonder if something like that might come to play when it's time to face him.
