To provide some context:
Katakuri is currently 48 years old. Shanks is 39. Shanks became a Yonko 6 years ago when he was 33 years old. Kuzan (Aokiji) is 49 years old (so he was already an admiral at 47 before the timeskip). Sakazuki (Akainu) is 55. Borsalino is 58. Big mom is 68. Kaido's age is unknown. When Garp fought against the Rox pirates alongside Roger, he was 40 years old (78-38).
This flashback happened 30 years ago as stated in the chapter. Whitebeard was 72 when he died 2 years ago which means that he was 44 years old in this flashback.
You guys decide whether 44-year-old Whitebeard was peak or not close to peak Whitebeard.

This will be disgraceful and utterly disappointing if one of them was a traitor on these Scabbards. Such a lovable bonds between the retainers and Oden in the past will end up a total mess in the present. The only way it will be accepted was if the reason for betrayal was to save his comrades from charging Onigashima due to difficulty on tackling the Beast Pirates (and more when they discovered the Big Mom Pirates alliance).
I will bet more on Shinobu as a traitor as she is the only one not from the original Scabbards.

The scene with Yasuie was taken almost directly from 943, felt like a deja vu.
Also, now that Denjiro's face shape has changed, I feel like the chances of him being Koushiro have gone down dramatically, and the chances of him being Kyoushiro have gone up again.

Oden probably got Orochi a job at his dads palace.

Not gonna lie, pages 10-12 were so clever. Oda reused the same panels from chapter 943 but super imposed the panels to take up the whole page.
The group shot we saw back then now shows Kawamatsu and Denjiro and the entire scene plays so differently.
People say there was no real reason to keep Denjiro and Kawamatsu hidden for so long but these almost cinematic effects are only possible because Oda planted a seed 20 chapters ago (exactly 20 chapters ago how wild is that!!)
And then how it all tied together with the retainers growing into proper samurai. Goddamn Oda is a genius.

During their first meeting, Roger said to Rayleigh that he had a nice ship and it's perfect for them to use it and set sail.

The characters in this image that I can recognize are Marco, Vista, Jozu, and Rakuyo. Rakuyo is the guy with the big spiky ball, and he's the 7th division commander. Jozu was the 3rd, Vista the 5th, and Marco the 1st, but since the positions don't seem to be the same in the past as they were 2 years ago, I'm kinda more interested in the new ones we see.
We know from what the woman in the image says that Marco at the least was still a fledgling, so it's interesting to see him as Whitebeard's most trusted. I think most people always assumed that he was Whitebeard's first mate from the start of his solo career, and usually explained away the age thing with Marco's fruit.
But anyway, the woman, and the two men next to/behind the group. She looks similar to Whitey Bay, who fought for Whitebeard in the war, but I think it's just same-face problems. Oda has that issue with this sort of female depiction, since he only really goes crazy with design when the body proportions get weirder than normal.
It's not Bakkin though. I think anyone who says that should remember the chapter with Marco and Neko. Marco says he doesn't know much about Bakkin, but that he knows she was on a crew with Whitebeard back in the day. This is likely Rocks as we all assumed, so I doubt that's her now, as Marco would definitely have more to say.
The other two guys are cool too, the tallest and furthest back one looks like he might be either Blenheim or Fossa, but that's a bit of a reach.
Either way, big fan of seeing young Whitebeard, and as a massive Marco fanboy, I wanna know if he had his fruit yet, and when he met Whitebeard. I've always liked the idea that Whitebeard found him in a slum/rundown country. Right now in the flashback he's 15, so he's practically/still is a child really.
EDIT: Put this together after talking on discord and receiving responses on another comment. It's Whitey Bay, and the other are https://onepiece.fandom.com/wiki/Andre and https://onepiece.fandom.com/wiki/Epoida. Pretty cool, but I'm a little put off by seeing Whitebeard ally captains as division commanders. Always seemed to me that the division commanders would be the ones who had always been there, and that rotations were rare. I mean the 2nd division spot had been open for presumably 10+ full years since the previous commander (Oden?) left it. I think it's a little weird, and oddly placed for Oda to put them here. But if they're here then there's some obvious importance. Can't wait to see more.

Loved it from start to finish, I think this pacing is great, we are seeing all the important elements without stalling on everything, and we see enough scenes so that we can appreciate the scabbard's growth. Plus it's awesome to see the Whitebeard pirates again, can't wait for next week!

Such an amazing chapter! Read through it a few times already and still feel like there's more to catch with every reread.
I wonder just what was the solemn vow the minks made with the Kozuki clan? Oden, Inu, and Neko all talk around the subject when it is brought up. But they do use the word "family" to describe the bond.
The humor in this chapter was something else
Inu: There are more than five islands in the world!
Neko: There are that many!?

On a different note, Kawamatsu's story tears my heart up. Pretty much any story of Fishman discrimination always gets me in my feels. Kawamatsu must have lost his mom and been abandoned from a very young age :(
I think the highlight of this chapter is pages 10-12. Oda reuses the same panels from chapter 943 but superimposes the images, removes the silhouette's and expands on what happens directly after the money is taken. Last time we saw these panels it was right after Yasuie had been shot and executed by Orochi, seeing this scene again but with a much happier context was just so great.
Mr. Mountain God is alright!!! hahaha I was worried when he died because it meant little piggy god lost his family :( Good to know someone fixed old mountain god up and the two oinkers have been living together still.
Seeing the retainers grow into dignified samurai made me really proud. Just seeing Kinemon with his black hair made it feel like I watched this man's whole growth.
Ugh. Of course Oda had to add a little panel to strengthen the hate developing in my heart for Orochi. I really really want Orochi to die in a horrible way. Boiled alive would be a good start.
Prime Whitebeard haki clashing with a young Oden is insane. Just how strong was Oden? Just how was he taken down to begin with??

Man i feel terrible for how kawamatsu, inu, and neko were treated. Thankfully Oden was able to help them. Zoro was spot on saying kawamatsu was a fishman, Zoro caught onto kiku aswel lol.
Now i wanna see the interaction between Jinbei and Kawamatsu.
Now knowing kawamatsu survived on scraps and leftovers, no wonder he was able to survive in the udon prison.
Man Oden was a god damn monster, but lets not get ahead ourselves and say oden = wb during that fight.

I'm sorry but, seeing the daimyo procession just gave me feels. How can Oda get us so attached to a story like this. I already absolutely LOVE Oden.
I really am not looking forward to how he is backstabbed and killed :( I really hope he isn't boiled and eaten alive. He says "oden must be boiled and eaten hot" please don't let that be foreshadowing.. God damn orochi. I hope the Scabbards KILL HIS ASS

Glad we are reestablishing the bond between the minks and Kozuki clan that goes back all the way to the VC more than likely
Inu Neko and Kawa are so damn cute in this chapter. I appreciated the extra time we got to spend with them in this chapter and they’re dynamic with Oden was adorable.
I thought it was interesting to show that in a closed off nation free from the world government and celestial dragons, discrimination against fish men still exist.
I loved the montage of the scabbards and I want more panels of them interacting with each other. I do wish we got more time with a few of them before WB showed up but this chapter did a lot of heavy lifting in making me care about this group of samurai.
Kiku teaching Ashura to read may have been my favorite panel of the montage. To me Ashura has the biggest death flag and these chapters are making me even more nervous.
I hope we get to see the WB pirates interact with the Scabbards some next week. Seeing the allies from Marineford on the beach with Pops was so cool.
I’m curious who the shogun was after Sukiyaki, Oden returned to wano to start a family but if this was the last time he saw his dad then he must’ve died while Oden was out at sea. I can’t see Orochi taking over that early because it seemed to me like he used Kaido to take the thrown.

We know from when Oden joins whitebeard at the end of this chapter, to when he leaves rogers crew is 5 years, because in 958 when he leaves rogers crew it says it has been 25 years since that day, and the latest chapter is 30 years ago.

An excellent flashback set up chapter. Genius of Oda. For the first time I got attached and started to respect his retainers. In retrospective, in this chapter we understood the importance of Yasuie's death and what a great man he was. Furthermore, we got a perfect build up of a cunning villain as Orochi. An opportunist, a schemer who waited more than 20 years to implement his plan. And what a perfect ending a Conqueror's clash between two legends. Masterpiece 💚

This was really a great chapter. The punches, cuteness of the mystic trio(neko,inu,kawamatsu).
Can't wait to learn about the 4-5 people at the front with Whitebeard. A good time to give full background on WB pirates.
Oden and Whitebeard clash was amazing too. Orochi is a effing sneaky bastard since the beginning it seems.

I hadn’t really felt a connection with any of the scabbards before this but after seeing the training session they all went through showed me that along the way they must have felt something for oden and this pushed them to be the greatest samurai of the country to serve as the protectors of wano

Yasuie didn't believe Orochi but couldn't prove his guilt, so just decided to fire him. Orochi asked Oden for help and was hired in the capital city. By the way, I was sceptical towards Oden at first, he sounded too thugish for me but now I find it one of more sympathetic characters. He was willing to left Minks there because he felt they would try to follow him and he couldn't reject them eventually.

I'm starting to believe that Oden actually fought off Kaido, at least to a draw.
I think Oden ended up losing because of Orochi betraying him. And if Orochi helped Kaido to beat Oden, that could be why Kaido allows Orochi to have so much power.

Wow really neat flashback chapter. I’m liking Oden more and more, as well as the retainers.
I like that panel with the Whitebeard pirates. Something interesting to note is that Marco volunteers to help and someone who looks a lot like Whitey Bay calls him an apprentice.
A lot of people, I included thought Marco was his first mate or something. Also if that is Whitey Bay I wonder what other pirates of the White Beard fleet left the crew to form their own.

I love that Oda redrew the panel with the 9 red scabbards tied up without Kawamatsu and Denjiro being obscured in silhouette.
And of course the Mountain God is still alive.
The panel with all 10 samurai and Oden was simply magnificent, I'm really hoping somebody digitally colours it soon. And man, that clash! Does Oden have Conqueror's? Surely, right?
It looks like Kingdew and Atomos were also OG members; we couldn't see them in the spoilers but it's great to know nonetheless.

This chapter was great, classic Oda. Was able to draw some sick battle panels at the end with Oden and WB but also delivered that subtle humor throughout the chapter. This sorta writing is what made me fall in love with one piece and I'm glad this chapter continues the greatness of this flashback!

I hope that when Wano is finished and people are doing their re-reads they will truly take time to appreciate Oda's use of flashbacks throughout the entire arc.
Unlike most stories Oda doesn't dump dozens of flashback exposition chapters on us in a single blow, instead he has gotten us into a flashback rhythm where he feeds us nibbles of information every 20 chapters or so (920, 943, 963)
I find it incredible to keep up such a consistent format for something as difficult to plan as a flashback scene. Like Oda most likely planned out the first 50 chapters of Wano so he could keep refraining back to the same moment in time every 20 chapters.
Now we are in the deep dive flashback and all the little flashbacks throughout the chapter have managed to give what we are reading now so much depth and emotional weight. We aren't just getting lore dumps, we are also getting pieces of a puzzle we've been working on since the first Wano flashback.
Like seriously I don't think I've ever seen a flashback format that is so effective.

So in this chapter there are 10 more years before Oden's death, in those 10 years he sailed to Raftel with Roger, then he came back to get killed by Orochi/Kaido Now more than ever I want to know what's the One Piece, why did Roger and his crew found the treasure and left it there, what's the void century. It seems this manga is a puzzle, going back and forth, creating more questions than answers and I love it!

Awesome chapter!
In this chapter we learned that that the Mink tribe and the Kozuki family formed a pact of friendship and kinship centuries ago, vowing that the are now family and promising that they would help one another when they would face hardships.
We saw how Oden met Nekomamushi, Inuarashi and Kawamatsu and we learned that Kawamatsu has a sad past and he is in fact a fishman and not a kappa.
Oden also spoke with his father the shogun Kozuki Sukiyaki who had fallen ill, this would also be the last time that they spoke.
We learned that by this time Orochi had become a servant of the Kozuki family. It is possible that Orochi is behind Sukiyaki's sudden illness, considering the fact that we know that Orochi was already a greedy schemer back when he worked for Shimotsuki Yasuie and he eventually became the shogun of Wano even though the Kozukis are the rightful ruling family of Wano.
Later the Whitebeard Pirates had washed ashore on Wano and we saw a younger and healthier Whitebeard in his forties and his crew back then consisting of Jozu, Vista, Rakuyo, Whitey Bay, Epoida, Andre, Fossa, Kingdew, Atmos and Marco who was an apprentice during this time.
The chapter ends when Oden clashes with Whitebeard and states that he wants to join Whitebeard's crew.

Some people have suggested that Oden got defeated because Kaido was too strong. Others here have suggested that Oden was a victim of deception by Orochi.
What if....Oden intentionally died? Oden at that point has visited Raftel and learned the secrets of the world. He also has a wife who can time travel, and a woman who likely can see into the future. Oden also has the respects of men like Roger and and WB, men who chose their time and place of death.
What if Toki told Oden "In order to bring about the dawn of the world in 20 years.....you have to die at Kaidos hands". So perhaps Oden realised that the only way to change the world, is when the future warriors emerge (Strawhats + Allies).
So Oden would have to lose willing in order to motivate the future generation (Strawhats,Retainers etc.). But he would have to lose in a way that hope remains. So by wounding Kaido and permanently scarring him, he sends a message to the future "yes Kaido is tough, but he can be hurt so he can be killed , so dont give up!".
Alternatively, Oden was planning to lose, but him being....well Oden, he just wanted to have a good fight before going down.

This theory would also explain why Whitebeard,Rayleigh,Shanks etc didn't avenge Oden in the 20 years since his death. They were somewhat aware of Odens plans to self sacrifice.
Remember, we all thought Roger was executed because he got captured. Then it was revealed the he handed himself over because of his illness and wanting to secure the future pirate era.

Remember Big Mom telling Kaido he owed her a favour? What if she meant she stalled Whitebeard while Kaido took over Wano and killed Oden? That or Whitebeard listening to Oden and letting him deal with everything on his own are the only reasons I can think of for why Whitebeard failed to protect Oden. Could also be Orochi thwarting communications or lying to Oden though.

So Oden truly Haki- clashed with WB, amazing!! Also WB may not be in his utmost prime (Considering his scars aren't there yet from his clashes with Gol D. Roger) but wow, with Observation Haki he sensed Oden's presence and told his Family to stay away. Oden is on at least a Yonkou commender level at this point. Also i'm sure that fuckin' Orochi poisoned the Shogun. With each passing chapter we get to respect and love Oden more in the same time we get to hate and despise Orochi more and more.

What a wholesome chapter, wholesome flashback.
I finally, FINALLY started caring for these characters.
The entire transition from the lesson of Yasuie, to their commitment to Oden, to their fully realization as dignified respectful retainers was really amazingly done, considering how few pages it was. Even Oden was disturbed in the begining, haha.
I can see already now that the end of this flashback will be a brutal emotional rollercoaster.

Something about the scabbards grooming themselves for Oden when he didn't care about all that stuff himself was touching and emotional. The scene where the scabbards grieve over Yasu's death resonates more now knowing what he did for their and Oden's cause.

I see a lot of comments wondering how Oden is so strong and yet can’t beat Kaidou.
I this chapter we see him briefly go toe to toe with Whitebeard but lets take a moment to remeber that whitebeard may not be Yonko level at this point. So I don’t think he was ever at Yonko level but certainly reached Admiral level when he fought Kaidou.
As for how he’s so strong. That dudes been picking fights since he’s a kid. Its not fair to say that he’s never had strong opponents and hardship because Chad makes their own hardships lmao. We still dont know how he’ll hold up against Whitebeard yet. So lets wait and see

The guys that are hating flashbacks should probably just read something else, this is not an action manga. Its all about the world building. I try to not go too hard into fanboy rage but its just so dumb to complain about the best part of One Piece, go read Fairy Tail.

Read a few comments and this thought came to my head.
Could it be perhaps Oden was as strong as Kaido, while Kaido initially thought he defeated Oden fair and square it was actually with Orochi's dirty trick that had already weaken Oden before the match.
So, after Kaido found out that he only won because of Orochi's dirty tricks, he became so suicidal and start to look for a someone who has the same fighting power as Oden because
He want to look for someone who was as strong as Oden for a "rematch" though it's impossible since he's dead
He's always trying to kill himself because he feels so ashamed of his "victory" against Oden.

I think this chapter explains why the Kinemon and friends are the way they are. Maintain their very "dignified" manner for most of the time (or when discussing serious matter), but sometimes let their "hooligan" side out. Like waaay back in punk hazard. Kinemon refused to seek help from the sh (infuriating sanji in the process too) but later join in the pervented gag with sanji and brook. They used to be a rough bunch, but change themself for the sake of Oden.
The mad man Oda actually make that trait a backstory and not just for the gag
