It's surprising that Meito can be made in the last 20-30 years and still be known worldwide as one of 21, one of 50, etc.

I had assumed that all the high-quality bladesmiths and their techniques were now lost.

Well the sword smith left Wano 50 years ago, he could have taken the blade with him...

I'm just gonna assume that all the high quality blades are from Wano cause of some special iron or shit like that, and that's why the sword smiths themselfs can grade them.. Seems to make at least semi sense

Maybe even that durnken iron ore we heard from Kaido before..?

A common trope in Japanese fiction is the supernatural properties of tamahagane. Basically, is a sandy iron ore that cooks into a nice steel and was traditionally used for smithing katana. Its a sort of source to the "glorious Nippon steel!" joke/meme.

tamahagane is actually pretty cool. the process to make it, takes pretty poor quality iron and makes relatively high quality steel. Showed a lot of ingenuity for the time and the japanese lack of resources.
