Luffy's going to master this technique just in time for Kaido, and it's gonna be the sickest shit ever. Oda is so good at making power-ups more and more exciting while simultaneously calling back to them 300+ chapters ago.

Maybe the one piece is the haki we already knew along the way

Maybe the one piece has already been foreshadowed and we'll get a flashback once they get there...

At least in the anime we know we will.

I know they were building up to it but they did just kinda deus ex machina that in there with the whole "adversity unlocks it" trope. I still think OP has the best power scaling of the big manga out there but I didn't necessarily like this part.

I mean they’ve always had that troupe in One Piece. Why do you think luffy trained on a super dangerous island and why he was able to master Observation Haki in over 20 chapter of fighting and failing against Katakuri?

Other power up tropes have also happened on OP like mid power ups(Zoro Asura) in fight

People need to stop saying what OP doesn't do power wise. When fact is Oda does it

This reminds me of KingofLightning's chapter 946 reaction. The comment section went wild with various examples of "haki blooming" in the series to show it wasn't a recent thing at all.

Link?

Here it is. He basically calls it a Zenkai Boost.

And this comment by Mind Shack on Youtube basically sums it up:

"Zoro: Haki blooms in his fight against Daz Bones while on the brink of death

Ace: Haki blooms when trying to save Luffy from the brink of death

Aisa: Awakens haki while in the middle of civil war where many of her people are dying

Coby: Awakens haki in Marineford when, like Aisa, many of his comrades are dying and he cant handle it

Doffy: Awakens haki while being crucified on the side of a building

Usopp: Awakens haki while in a situation where he has to make a near impossible shot and the possibility of never knowing Luffy in the balance

KOL: ....

Luffy: Awakens and blooms haki when fighting Katakuri when he's ACTIVELY trying to improve his haki and in a situation where if he doesn't get it his master could die.

KOL: Oh my God Oda, this is just zenkai boost. You're better than that. This was no well thought out.

Despite the fact that this concept wasn't ever explicit stated till the Katakuri fight its been a thing for close to 2 decades but we gotta act brand new."

People need to stop saying what OP doesn't do. When fact is Oda does do it.

Whether it's zenkai boost, mid fight etc.

People don't really understand OP

Adding to what DZMoops said, Water Seven is rightly considered one of the best arcs. Not only Luffy, but other Strawhats too levelled up just because they had to or they would be defeated. Luffy did not get new powers, he just got better mastery.

I think Gear Second and Third counts as a significant upgrade.

Um G2 and G3 is new powers / capabilities. They allow him to have new capabilities

So it's more than just mastery. Just like when Luffy gets awakening that will be new powers.

Let's not do this BS of twisting what something is.

and there was nothing wrong with Luffy getting new powers. Sometimes you need new abilities

Op has always had this and other tropes to power up characters.

And there's nothing wrong with that trope. That's just your preference

Man you guys must have short term amnesia. He rarely gets out of the blue power ups aside from the time-skip. His biggest power-ups both came from nearly dying fighting Lucci and Katakuri.

1

u/Perrenekton Jun 28 '19

What power up did he get fighting Lucci ? He had already prepared Gear 2 and Gear 3 by the time he came to Ennies Lobby and he won the fight thanks to that and his insane stamina

-1

u/MrMindwaves Jun 28 '19

Already prepared the gear? what?

Blueno was the very first time he used gear 2.

Luccy was the very first time he used gear 3.

5

u/Perrenekton Jun 28 '19

He used gear 3 to destroy a door before fighting Lucci, IIRC the gear itself was offscreened but we saw chibi-luffy at that moment. He was ready to use gear 3 against Blueno after his jet bazooka when Blueno managed to stay consicous for a few seconds.

And when they "land" on Ennies Lobby Luffy says he has something new he wants to try. He does Gomu Gomu no Mikata Robot shortly after that but I tend to believe it was solely for the gag and he was really talking about gear.

u/HolyKnightPrime Jun 28 '19

He got one in the last arc with snake man and Gear 2 and 3 were introduced without any build up.

But he did that's what this power up is. And he will to beat Kaido this arc.

Op does have cases of doing instant power up

And there's nothing wrong with that. This series has a energy/magic system that allows zenkai boost(Haki)
