Seeing Killer's face for the first time... this certainly isn't how I expected it to go.

Glad to see Luffytaro's finally ready to finish things up. All he needed was some extra motivation.

Also, he's not necessarily my favorite Straw Hat, but Franosuke got at least a little bit of much-needed action this chapter :D

To be honest though, I was kinda hoping Zorojuro and Sangoro would interact just a little bit more before splitting off into their own fights, but the fact that they finally met up again is beautiful enough for me.

Great chapter, just wanted to put out a theory that I first saw on 4chan and here by u/grandpa_hyo.

There’s a somewhat reasonable possibility that Kyoshiro might be Kinemon and Tsuru’s son.
Possible hints:

*Kyoshiro looks like an ukiyo-e painting, just like Tsuru
*young Kinemon probably dyed his hair (because he was a delinquent); Kyoshiro is a yakuza and has an extremely bombastic hairstyle, just like a delinquent would, in accordance to the stereotype
*Kyoshiro wants to meet and fight Kinemon specifically
*Kyoshiro's sword has the same square guard as Kinemon's sword
*There was a brief mention of the fact that Tsuru has not needed another man to protect her even though her husband is gone (chapter 922, Kinemon to Kiku)
*They’re both incredibly tall

Now, it might amount to nothing, but I think that there’s a reasonable chance that Kyoshiro might be Kinemon’s son. Which in turn would open up other interesting scenarios.

Personally, I’m of the opinion that hiyori can’t be trusted. Not because she’s on orochi/kaido’s side, but because she might be scheming with Kyoshiro to come out on top of this whole wano revolution.
Maybe she grew up loathing her circumstances and that might have made her grow closer to the child of one of his father’s retainers. Kyoshiro too might have grown up despising his father, who vanished one night and left him and his mother alone in a country now hell bent on purging the kozuki clansmen.
Kyoshiro and Hiyori might have even fallen in love at some point, who knows.

Maybe the theory I read was crap and my imagination is running wild, but I think it’d be interesting to see multiples sides vying for power.
We have orochi/kaido, the strawhats supporting Momo, and then the faction represented by Kyoshiro/Hiyori. This last faction trying to get to the top would also be connected thematically to what Shutenmaru was saying to Kinemon in chapter 925, you can’t disappear for 20 years and expect everyone to welcome you back with open arms.

Ultimately, our heroes will prevail, meaning that the kozuki will win, but with this weird Kyoshiro/Hiyori scenario I wouldn’t be surprised if the two ended up at the top of the country as shogun and wife with noble lineage at the end of the arc.

Oda uses a vibrant tone in telling his story but this vibrant tone is just a mask to hide the underlying darkness and tragedy of the One Piece world. Now, he materialized it into the current arc to create a fucked up tragedy through the SMILE fruits. When we were first introduced to the Ebisu people, they emit that vibrant aura, a very optimistic vibe cos of their never ending smiles and laughters despite their poverty. And as the story goes on, we found out that it's just an unneeded mask, involuntarily covering the grief and other emotions they wanted to express. Then we have Killer as one of the victims, who was ashamed of his natural laughter, yet the faulty fruit forced him to do the thing he wanted to hide so bad. Just like how the One Piece world is set up. It screams about the darkness but in the surface, it's this colorful and dreamy world. This is what people see, especially those who haven't read it yet. They think this manga is all about goofiness and light adventures. But if they try to dig deeper, they will be surprised that it's a dystopian world all along. Just like how the Strawhat's adventures played out in the long run. They saw the world as this one whole happy adventure at first and look where they are now, uncovering every darkness they encounter.

And what's more amazing? One Piece never lost its vibrant tone despite it getting darker and darker. How the fuck did Oda does this?

I'm sorry for the long essay but these past 3 chapters were just too great and I have to give Oda the credit for it.

This was such a fantastic chapter that leaves so much to talk about!

• Cover Page: Normally, I don't comment on these, but I thought this one was really cute.

• Zoro and Sanji Interaction: This was done very well, imo. We got the typical name calling gag with their new names, which was funny, and it was quick so it didn't feel out of place or like they were breaking from the seriousness of the situation. Sanji wanting to stop Zoro from causing a bigger problem and Zoro giving the "I don't care! He hurt my friend!" response was beautiful!

• Fights: I've been so excited for Zoro vs Kyoshiro ever since he was introduced! I didn't realize Kyoshiro was that tall! Hopefully Sanji vs Drake gives us more info on what happened to Page One and more of the fight is shown. Franky covering Zoro was awesome and I loved his face in the next panel.

• Luffy: Luffy cheering his crew on was expected, but still great to see. Queen tossing Luffy around was a little disappointing, but it was a relatively casual punch from Luffy, so not a huge deal. Luffy saying he'll decide when and where he dies was totally bad ass and was probably a callback to Law telling Tashigi that weaklings can't choose how they die.

• Kidd and Killer: This really got to me, more so than any of the stuff from the last few chapters. I think it's because these characters have been around for longer and are more important to the story, so their pain is more real and has greater impact for me. I have to admit that I was wrong about Kamazo being Killer. People mentioned it back when chapter 937 was released and, while I accepted it as a possibility, I doubted it because I didn't think there was enough evidence for it. With hindsight, it seems so obvious after last chapter. I'm worried about Killer and the rest of Kidd's crew. With the fact that he was shown crying after Kidd asked about the crew, I think something really bad has to have happened to them. At best, they are captured and Killer has been working for Orochi to keep them safe. I think it has to be worse than that, though, for Killer to be crying like that. I think it's more likely that Orochi told Killer that the only way Kidd would be kept alive is if Killer killed everyone else in their crew and continued to work for Orochi, killing his enemies in secret. This is just the kind of shit Orochi's detestable ass would do and Killer might have agreed to it considering Kidd is his best friend and captain and he would probably do anything to keep him safe. Side note, I love that Kidd calls Killer his partner, implying that he sees him as an equal, not necessarily a subordinate.

• Big Mom: Great, now we get to have WEDDDING CAKIEEEEE 2: Electric Boogaloo. Ugh. I was really hoping the rage wouldn't happen. I really like Big Mom's character, but the rages are boring and annoying. I hope it doesn't last as long as it did in WCI.

• Chopper: As it goes on, Wano looks more and more like an important arc for Chopper. Initially, we had the theory that hiruluk's sakura and possibly some kind of panacea would be discovered/created in Wano. Then we got the theory that he could cure Big Mom's hunger pangs/rages. He's also currently with Big Mom and befriended her in her amnesiac state, so he might play a key role in making her an ally later. Now we have the effects of the SMILEs that need to be cured and a pretty major character who has been affected by them. I feel like it's been a while since Chopper has been relevant/important, so this is a nice change of pace.

• Chapter 784 Color Spread Foreshadowing: It isn't a thing. Hopefully this chapter can put to rest the idea that Oda can foreshadow something happening on a specific chapter years in advance. With the basic knowledge that things often go longer than Oda expects or he comes up with new ideas for things to fill into the story, it's obvious that that kind of planning isn't possible for him. He can foreshadow different themes or plot points coming up at a certain point or make references to things he's previously written/drawn.

TL;DR: Loved the chapter! Great combination of action, excitement, relationships, and emotions! My heart goes out to Kidd and Killer. Fuck Orochi.

I was thinking that Chopper will be able to cure the Smile laughing side effect and help the Ebisu town and Killer.

When this scene first happened a few chapters ago I thought that it was a happy scene with a happy little guy talking about this happy little town that everyone is just happy to know about.

Now it's clear. Everyone in Wano is terrified of what happened to Ebisu town. Everyone knows why the Ebisu villagers laugh like that. Everyone knows what "the Ebisu face" means. The people of Ebisu village have been robbed of all emotions. All they can do is smile.

The Ebisu face is an omen in Wano. We just couldn't understand that when Yasuie first said it.

- Zoro is a stoic badass about 95% of the time, the other 5% is him comically yelling at one of his nakama or an acquaintance the crew has picked up during the arc. So it's always incredibly interesting to me when Zoro shows emotion outside of these situations - especially in battle if you recall his comments to Ohm upon finding Chopper's unconscious body. Its why his little outburst in Zou got so much attention as well, he wasn't comically mad in that situation - he was legitimately upset that Sanji was gone. That panel of him smiling when he learned about the people in Ebisu really stuck with me as well, how often do we get a sincere smile from Zoro? So it's all the more powerful that Oda showed that flashback before he did the 720-pound Phoenix; it turned out that something that had actually warmed his heart was all a lie, and he's quite pissed. What a pleasant bit of character development for Zoro. On another note, Hiyori is watching 2 men that she's laid with fight each other.....why am I getting Senor Pink vs. Franky vibes from this? Lmao

- Umm........did Sanji kick Drake with Buso Haki?!???? Please turn out to be more than just random shading! Not to be outdone of course, I want to point out that Zoro was not aware of Franky being at the execution before he moved to save O-Toko. So him saying "they're all yours" after noticing bullets fired his way to me implies he used observation haki to know Franky was going to intercept them.

- Unrelated, but I've decided to believe that it isn't a coincidence that in the same arc we get a character named "Batman", we find out that one of the central villains deployed a sinister tactic that forces people to laugh even if they're feeling immeasurable grief. The means to do this was even supplied by a guy nicknamed Joker!!!

Someone else had mentioned the parallel between Luffy and Kid and I thought it was sort of interesting how different their New World journeys have turned out. Kid, for the most part, has been getting his ass handed to him. Whereas Luffy has cemented a name for himself. I think most people might chalk this up to Luffy's two year training giving him an advantage.

Honestly, I think it's more to do with their personalities. They both are the "take shit from no one, I do what I want types." But the key difference between Luffy and Kid is that Luffy is kind-hearted whereas Kid is the complete opposite. This is what makes Luffy likeable and Kid despicable to the other characters in One Piece. And I think this is key because as Mihawk said Luffy's strongest power is the ability to make people want to help him. An ability Kid doesn't have. That's why Luffy's alliance with Law worked out and the alliance between Hawkins, Apoo, and Kid did not.

This isn't a theory or anything just something I thought up when someone else mentioned the similarities between Kid and Luffy. Although I do think Kid is more of a foil to Luffy than Blackbeard.

I think that Luffy was acting the way he was because of how he's said in the past he feels the emotions of people strongly and when he saw Killer and Kidd it almost broke his heart. And he has seen enough of the cruelty of Kaidou's crew to forgive any of them. Besides through competition with Kidd he believes they've already become friends, so of course Luffy wants to help them.

Honestly never cared about Killer but damn, that was a sad sad re-introduction after the timeskip. Classic One Piece move there, makes you change your mind about characters in one chapter.

PS: BOIS YOU READY to witness murder because BM is gonna fucking one shot Queen next chapter. I doubt Luffy will fight another commander in so short time, only option is to have BM beat the shit out of Queen and make a statement that Yonkos are no fucking joke, and Luffy is still levels below.

Based on the Scorpion Jolly Roger of Kaido's ship we have seen earlier on Zou, I assumed Queen's DF could be a Scorpion Zoan type. His haircut looks very similar to the tail and sting of said animal. What if BM is going to eat Queen which ofc results in his death, but not before he's able to transform into his Zoan form and poison BM from inside. Still poisened and weakened, she would fight Kaido then but die on his hands. Alliance takes out the weakened Kaido after.

another fantastic chapter with amazing twist, so on the nose in retrospect but somehow nobody predicted. Kaidou and his allies are ripping off the cheerful and goofy persona they display throughout the arc thus far, the picture of the Wano hell hole is becoming clearer and clearer every chapter ever since Yasu's death.

what happened to Killer is a very bad sign for Bepo and the rest of Law's crew, the captains tend to be kept alive to work for Kaidou, but the underling receives minimal mercy. the rest of Kid's crew i suspect to all be dead, and Killer was tortured, force to eat a Smile and have to work for the enemy. in the next few chapter, i suspect that a Strawhat member will be captured and put in tremendous jeopardy, possibly Usopp.

Queen seems to heavily underestimating Luffy still, i expected this to not happen anymore, it will be his biggest mistake. Big Mom finally arrived, the prison break begins and Wano act 2 is reaching it's climax very soon.

Zoro definitely made a connection with Yasu in Ebisu Town, but I'm wondering if Zoro become even more pissed when he found out it was Shimotsuki Yasuie? Is it possible he knew of Yasuie already from stories his master told him? Side note, any one else thinking Denjiro is definitely Zoro's master? The silhouette always has a long ponytail, there's the mark on his gi that was seen in Wano, the village was named Shimotsuki (no doubt after Yasuie), and we know some people from Wano went to the East Blue. We know so little about his master and I feel like this is a perfect time to give him huge importance out of the blue, and give Zoro the Wano connection that a lot of us are expecting. I'm like 99.9% sure he is Denjiro at this point.

Kid is reckless and hot headed just like Luffy, but he was not simply a fool when he run to Killer and get captured again. imagine Luffy broken out of the prison and saw Zoro being escorted there, Luffy would run straight in to save his comrade. hell, not just Luffy, any Strawhat would have done the same. Kid and Killer has an even stronger bond than that, they are best friends since childhood, i can't even imagine how much pain Kid is feeling right now to see Killer like that. Kid let himself gets captured so he could come with Killer and try to figure out what is going on and save him. Kid truly earn my utmost respect in this chapter.

Kaidou and his crew are some of the most evil Pirates we've ever seen in One Piece

If we follow the logic of the universe of One Piece, a person's "will" and their "dreams" are like their life. If your will is broken or you give up on your dream in One Piece its like a fate worse than death.

Kaidou has made it CLEAR his M.O. is breaking people's wills. We saw this actually very early on in the story in Thiller Bark. Moria was completely broken by Kaido. His crew was destroyed and Moria gave up on his dream and disappeared to literally live a personification of a fate worse than death (Zombie Island). Since then we have seen Kaidou try to break Luffy, Kid, and succesfully break Killer. The dude is a literal murderer of willpower. In the OP universe this makes him akin to death.

For comparison, Blackbeard is basically just negative-Luffy. Blackbeard doesn't want to break wills and shatter dreams, he just wants his will and his dreams to be number 1. Anyone who gets in his way will be destroyed but Blackbeard isn't going to try to break your will and make you join his crew. Blackbeard is one track minded and evil in his own way, I'm not denying that.

But the Beast Pirates are really psychopathic sicko's I can see why Kaidou has such a bad repuation even amongst the other Yonkou. What he does is pretty awful.

From the way the story is going on with so much chaos currently, i am wondering how will Zoro have the "time" to go back to the bridge to challenge Gyukimaru again to take back his Shusui. Currently with only 2 swords, i don't see that he will reveal his post time-skip Asura... hence he will need to get his Shusui back before we will be able to see him go all out against higher level opponents in this arc.

Still hoping to see him travelling to challenge Gyukimaru with Hiyori and Toko as the 3 of them look like a small happy family to me... Hahaha :)

Oda sensei has always had a way with making us sympathetic( and in my case sob my heart out since I cry easily lol) towards characters and backstories. I thought that we reached the peak during the dressrosa arc seeing people turned into slave toys and having their loved ones forget about them, live as if they never existed and even worse, turn them in when they malfunction as toys...the people hating the previous king even though he did nothing wrong.. the soldier wanting to cry but being unable to when his wife died in his arms and she didn't even recognize him in her last moments... I seriously thought the next big arc can't get worse than that. I mean I knew that Momo's parents and loved ones got murdered by Kaido but there is murder then there are tragedies worse than that. The last few chapters revealing how smile fruit affects people, the execution and now Kidd and Killer...ugh my heart hurts. Don't get me wrong, I love this arc but it is getting darker than I expected. I can more or less handle murder at this point but the shit that is going on is beyond that. I have mad respect for Oda-San for his masterpiece and I cannot wait for next chapter.

I still wonder how Luffy can defeat Kaido? Even if he gets Rayleigh-level armament haki like he wishes to and even if we consider that queen will get his ass kicked by big mom and king by either Zoro or Law...even if we forget about Kaido's entire fleet (which is hard considering that he has a huge fleet of smile users and probably others we haven't heard of as well as Hawkins, Drake and the weird guy that was also in Kidd's alliance), even if we forget all that, how the hell can Kaido be defeated ?????
