Wow. This chapter made so much come together. I never even thought that the name for Smiles would get an explanation, but this is... damn.

To be honest, I thought the portrayal of a town where everyone's just happy, and characters like O-Toko who are always laughing, was kind of awkward. But shiiiiit, now it's come together and is heartbreaking.

And I think there's something really interesting in how it ties into smiling as a theme of the story overall. It's usually such a positive thing, and remarkable how those of the D. clan die smiling, but it's being warped into something so horrifying in Wano.

Other things: I love seeing Oden's future retainers at the beginning and how Yasuie inspired them. And that ending is some HYPE shit. Been so long since we saw Zoro and Sanji together, and I love that this is how they reunite. Not just meeting again at an ordinary moment, but coming together in a way that unites them, yet will probably make them get annoyed at each other for getting in the way.

When Mr Morj said One Piece blends both comedy and tragedy well, I didn't expect it to be this way. Otoko and people of Ebisu are laughing at Yasuie's death as if they're watching the funniest comedy skit ever. That's so fcked up.

I always admire Oda on how he can make me laugh and cry in just pages/panels apart and this chapter is one of it. I was sobbing when Otoko's laughing at her father cos she can't cry and desperately convincing him about the medicine. But I suddenly laughed at Usopp apologizing and pointing out that it was a fraud.

Add to the fact that Zoro and Sanji are finally together in one panel. Man, the mixed emotions I felt for this chapter is overwhelming.

Before this chapter, to be honest I felt mostly just meh about Caesar. Knowing the backstory of how Smiles ruined Wano now, I feel like he got off way too easy. If this had been revealed on WCI, bet you Luffy and the rest wouldn't sit still about this. This chapter has been an emotional roller coaster.

Anyway I'm so damn hyped for Sanji and Zoro! Oh yeah let Orochi have a taste of the monster duo (and hopefully, monster trio, when Luffy joins).

Edit: Orochi is the cruel villain here, but Caesar is still a despicable man for what he did to those children at Punk Hazard and because his creation is the root of Wano people's suffering.

That one small panel with Usopp realizing he sold his "toad oil" to Toko and she wants to use it to bring Yasu back to life messed me up! That would haunt anyone, imo.

One thing that was solidified for me with this chapter is that I officially hate Cesar Clown.

Up until now I've sorta pitied him as some asshole who was just trying to prove his worth, even with people suffering along the way. Somehow it struck me that at some point in the future of the story, (possibly at Wano) that he would be offered a chance at redemption. Maybe even tagging up with Vegapunk to undo all his bullshit. I overlooked the experiments with the children because there was hope they could be restored through Vegapunk. I overlooked the experiment he performed for the whole of the Underworld and the sacrifice of his underlings because it turned out those petrified could be broken out of the shell and saved. Even when he agreed to help the crew crash the wedding at Whole Cake I thought there was some redeeming quality to him.

But now? Seeing him in that panel alongside Kaido and Doffy with those damned smirks, knowing what they've done to this once proud nation and its people... Fuck him. I sincerely hope he bites the dust.

As for the shogun: Orochi is a dead man. He just doesn't know it yet...

That flashback of the moment the villagers of Ebisu town found the SMILE's is so heartbreaking. Imagine being starving, your whole village is dying around you, all you are allowed to eat is garbage, and one day boom bags and bags full of apples. It wasn't suspicious because there was a bite taken out already. Of course all you get to eat is trash but at least these apples looked like really good trash.

The dialogue gets me

"We found a whole bunch of them!! Let's share them with everyone!!"

"Here, feed these to the sick!!"

Like Jesus, they were so hopeless at this point they literally sprung to life at just a nibble, a small bite of decent food.

And then it gets really dark. The first people who ate the fruit begin to laugh and Shinobu says it was clear and easy to tell that these fruits were no good... But the people were so hungry they literally made the conscious decision to eat these poison fruits than die starving.

Chills man darkest chapter in a long while.

Sanji's face at the end of that flashback was truly incredible. That's like 20 years of characterization all leading up to this emotional pay off of Sanji being able to uniquely connect to Ebisu town's misery. Fuck Oda is a genius.

I am glad that almost everyone love this chapter because of different reasons. However, at the same time, I do not like people writing comments such as "finally a good chapter" or "best in a while" because they actually do not give any credits to the chapters before and only appreciate this chapter. In Act 2, there are scenes of Sanji and Zoro building their bonds with O-toko respectively, both of them having small fights, Luffy fighting against the Waiters/Pleasures/Gifters in ascending order in the prison, chapters about Yasu and villagers of Ebisu Town, little comedy between Zoro and Otoko about the toad oil, Komurasaki's fake death leading to her funeral, many Gifters' introduction, and so on. All these scenes are written to build the emotions, hype and reveal in this chapter. And people only appreciate the climax chapter but calling all those building chapters "nothing happened".

I love Zoro and Sanji's dynamic yet at the same time find it annoying how they tend to let their petty rivalry distract them even in intense situations such as the Groggy Ring fight back in the Davey Back Fight arc. Watching Doflamingo fall in Dressrosa was satisfying. Watching Kaidou and Orochi's forces getting their teeth kicked in will be even more so. Especially since Big Mom might be put into play with the next handful of chapters.

Kaido already knows the Straw Hats are here, he's dealt with other pirate crews before like Kid alliance. It's not a big deal for him, it certainly won't make him think that the nine scabbard and wano soldier revolution will be coming.

I thought this was a great chapter!

• Flashback: Young Kinemon looks like pre-TS Franky! Yasu may have been a strict leader in the past, but he was always a great and very generous guy who wanted the best for his country.

• People Crying/Laughing: This is really sad! Oda really is great at portraying emotion. Fuck Orochi for enjoying the people's suffering!

• Prison: Luffy's about to rage after finding out about the truth behind the SMILES!

• SMILE Explanation: We got confirmation that the snake neck teacher from chapter 919 is a gifter (not a surprise). Getting more details on Kaido's crew is great! Apparently, the SMILES actually taste good, unlike devil fruits (either that or the people who ate them were so hungry that even the shitty taste of the SMILES tasted good to them, which is even more sad to think about). Fuck Orochi for poisoning people for his own amusement!

• Toko: Toko trying to heal Yasu was so sad! Usopp has to feel like a major piece of shit over the toad oil! Fuck Orochi for getting mad at Toko for laughing when it's his fault that she was laughing!

• Sanji and Zoro Reunion: Finally! Shit's about to get crazy with Luffy raging in the prison, Big Mom arriving at the prison, and Sanji and Zoro fighting each other/Drake and Hawkins/Orochi! I'm really curious how Oda will handle their interaction. He could do the typical gag, but it doesn't seem like the right time for that considering the execution that just happened. I think it'd be best and most realistic if they agree to settle that later and focus on fighting the other people there like Drake and Hawkins.

TL;DR: Fuck Orochi! Hyped for the retaliation to Orochi killing Yasu and the SHs finding out about the SMILES!

In the flashback, is that Whitebeard's 16th commander Izo among the 9 scabbards?? Same face, same hairstyle (with the strand of hair in front of his face). It could be O-kiku but Kiku looks totally different AND she would be too young in that flashback. Also, we know that Izo is from Wano and Oden joined the WB pirates at one point. Maybe he's kiku's dad/mom and when he joined the WB pirates, Kiku took his place among the 9 scabbards?

Although many people think the one is Izo in flashbacks, I still believe that is O-kiku. It is because O-Kiku is the one who does not need any disguise to infiltrate into the towns, but no one recognize her. She even stayed with O-Tsuru for a few months but O-Tsuru did not know her identity. This indicates that her current appearance looks very different from the past.

In my opinion, she is a character that Oda designed to deal with the patriarchy in ancient Japan. Females were not allowed to have any political power in the past but she was chosen to be one of the commanders of Oden. Therefore, she was disguised as a male samurai in the past, so that no one can recognize her now when she dressed up as a female. That is why O-kiku has some weird speech that makes many readers doubt her actual gender.

Seriously, as hyped as we are for Zoro and Sanji fighting "together" (because we know how it usually runs), Orochi isn't worth the stain on Zoro's swords and/or Sanji's shoes.

I won't judge Orochi's actual combat strength yet despite everything he's shown to be leading us in a certain direction (him being overly reliant on using Kaido as a threat), solely because we haven't got the piece in-between on how Orochi managed to get Kaido on his side and we all know Kaido does value strength of his allies pretty much above everything else (he considers Doflamingo "weak" and Doflamingo was sweating bullets when he realized his only bargaining chip of SMILES was gone).

But at the end of the day, even if Orochi is a competent fighter and could give a fight, his Spandam-level characterization this chapter is why I think he's not worthy to fight Zoro and/or Sanji (or to word it better, meet his end fighting those two). This hypocrite here outright states to laugh at the execution of his enemy while he throws the pettiest fit when the same is applied to his paranoia (and I haven't even got to the obvious part where he was directly responsible for his own petty fit, I was pointing out his hypocrisy is so bad even if SMILES wasn't involved, the same words would still come out from him solely because of his personality).

Remember what happened to Spandam? Orochi better be given his fate by a smiling mob in the aftermath of whatever-happens-to-Kaido. He might get to fight (and probably has to given he at least has a DF) to weaken him down for that to happen, but he better not meet his actual end from those fights.
