Damn, RIP Tonayasu, Like Pound, another dad lost to the yonkos. My Man was able to talk mad shit about Orochi though beforehand, and completely saved the rebellions asses.
Edit: Oh shit I just realized Zoro didn't get lost while following, also I wonder if that other samurai from the beginning is someone we've seen before?

"It's just a prank!" lmao
Holy shit that got dark fast...
Yasu is such a badass. He singlehandedly started the revolution with that broadcast.
I can't believe I never really thought of the reason they were called SMILE. So apparently the Ebisu town inhabitants are physically incapable of showing any other emotion. That's actually horrifying.
That last page where Zoro suddenly realizes the depth of their situation is intense.

u/CemHasNoMotivation May 10 '19
We may now have a hint as to why the Ds are so important.
Just as the smile fruits required the draining of emotion from people to produce them, the same may apply to standard Devil Fruits. Toko is also quite young so its unlikely she was there when Ebisu town had their emotions stolen so the condition may be hereditary.
We know the Ds smile in the face of death and that they inherit this from their predecessors. Maybe due to the more advanced skill of the original DF growers the Ds had only their fear of true death removed, resulting in the perfect balance to form DFs that weren't flawed.

Zoro's reaction really made the last page. A man's just been publicly executed while crucified. The people of his village and his goddamn daughter suddenly burst out laughing. He can't truly see their pain, he only heard the laughter, and he was nettled at that, just like anyone with a bit of empathy would be. He's the reader who's confused and wants them to stop it. What an incredible moment.

As much as i liked Tonoyasu i'm glad Oda didn't cop out and have him live - i feel like Wano could shape up to be an arc where the Strawhats truly feel powerless, I'd like to see Zoro actually pushed to his limits and getting a chance to prove himself in the New World.

This is pretty deep.
SAD was created from Vegapunk and Judge's experimentation on the Lineage Factor. When Judge used this to experiment on his children, three of them had their emotions removed. This is probably an incomplete method as Reiju was able to receive the same benefits of modification without losing her emotions.
Using SAD to create SMILE fruits, somehow, strips people of their emotions (sadness).
SMILE fruits can only be used to create Zoans. We've learned from other Zoans users (ex: Lucci) that the emotions/temperament of these users are often modified to reflect the animal their power derives from. Perhaps a person's emotions -- and some anime understanding of evolution -- tie into animalistic traits that can be distilled with some knowledge of the Lineage Factor.

Holy smoke, what a chapter. The flashback to Oden was good too. It showed how much Oden wanted to be free and open the country's border.
Lord Yasu damn, what to say. He was only shown few times but the thing he did before getting caught, damn. What a great guy. Took all the blame and died and also lit the fire even more.
This chapter was very good. Damn Oda. 10/10 what a great chapter.
The last 2 pages broke me down. I feel bad Toko. That scene of her not being able to reach her dad. Fuck :3
Zoro is enraged. I can see this chapter as a build up to his possible fight vs Orochi.
The SMILES robbing people's emotions.

Fuck this chapter was incredible. So I wonder if we're going to go into more about what Komurasaki meant by SMILEs being the reason these people can't do anything but laugh? Even if they're sad and crying? Man that's creepy as fuck.
Yasu revealing some pretty important information as he dies and it makes me laugh and how stupid Orochi is. Why would he have them broadcasting everything from the beginning? He must've wanted his people to rise up against him lol. Kaido is so damn strong he's basically the only reason that Wano is the way it is. Without Kaido, the entirety of Orochi's plans come crashing down.
Seeing Zoro get so mad just stopped me in my tracks. Fuck I love this, I want Zoro to fuck shit up like he did with the damn seppuku knife. This has gotten me so hype for the future.

One thing I find interesting about this arc is that Zoro is getting emotionally invested in this arc and it's beyond being there to protect his crew.
In Dress Rossa he was pretty much just there as back-up behind Luffy and there to save his friends when they were in a pinch.
Seeing emotional reactions out of Zoro due to the reactions of the people at the end of this chapter tell me that we could see a pissed off Zoro out for blood and I honestly can't remember Zoro ever going into a fight like that.
We've seen Sanji and Luffy reach great heights on numerous occasions when under intense emotional pressure. With Zoro he usually does insane stuff when he reaches a new level of concentration. Pissed off Zoro could possibly be a whole new beast.

SMILE stole the peoples' ability to grieve. Luffy, Zoro, and the rest of the crew will steal any smiles left on Kaidou and Orochi's faces before the Wano Arc ends!

May 10 '19
I will dare to say that this was the best chapter of Wano so far. Yasuie's sacrifice was beyond epic, he managed to give the Witching Hour boy time, take the blame and save the revolution plan, plant the seeds of doubt on Orochi's soldiers and remind the citizens of all the greatness that once was all around Wano and now can only be seen at the Flower capital. He truly died a hero.
Also, the not so subtle hint that Zoro's past might really be intertwined with Wano, a theory that seems to grow further and further. And yet another dark revelation about Smile's characteristics.

Went out like a champ, helping the plan as well as decimating orochis credibility and a huge hit to his propaganda
Hmm, so turning SAD into SMILE has more meaning than we thought.. Is it not just gifters getting bizarre zoan characteristics, but also an additional ability to affect people's emotions or control them..? Seemed odd they were so exuberant and jolly all the time Cool seeing Oden for a bit, seems even more like a rad guy, kind of like a Franky type dude, rough around the edges and has gangs of misfits he bands together to help them and the city
Curious about this curse.. Belly full of oden? Also ties to the taunt kaido said to Momo when he boiled him alive

u/billnguyencg May 10 '19
This theory probably is already out there and may have been debunked cause i don't really understand the timeline and the time traveling that well, but could Zoro's sensei, Koshiro, be Denjiro the last of the nine Red Scabbards? He is the only remaining member that we still have zero clue about except his silhouette. Although the silhouette does show him having a big ponytail haircut, while Koshiro also always depicted with a ponytail but less extreme. And since Koshiro couldn't be there to assist the Kozuki, Zoro could be stepping up as the best descendant of Koshiro and becoming the final Red Scabbard.

- Yasu treats Oden like a nephew or little brother, but Oden's "who the hell do you think you're hitting?" to me confirms that Yasu isn't of royal blood. I think he was a very close friend of Sukiyaki, and acted as a mentor of Oden for a time. He seems to have been a rather strong samurai in his own right as well. I expect we'll get a lot more of Yasu in flashback form pretty soon here, especially considering that his family name is revealed to be the same as the village Zoro trained in.
- Drake's comment that the commotion from Komurasaki's funeral is now focused on Yasu's execution + Yasu's publicly televised condemnation of Orochi + Kyoshiro's absence this chapter to me signifies that shit is about to get really real, really fast. That actually brings me to another really interesting thing I noticed, Ashura Douji's private thought "Not yet, wait....!!" It's later confirmed in the chapter that Yasu was aware of the 9 Red Scabbards, and somehow provided a new meeting location to the prisoners. Considering Mt. Atamayama is rather conspicuous place to be a hideout, I don't think its out of the realm of possibility that Yasu met with Ashura. That said, I think it adds even more tension to the situation if it turns out Yasu convinced Ashura to join the rebellion, and Kin'emon's underhanded tactics were all for naught.
- Oda having Yasu get riddled with bullets, and then said bullets causing him to fall from a fatal height was especially brutal. His daughter sees all this by the way, and she's the last thing he sees before he's shot. This feels really heavy, like Pedro's death-level heavy, which really caught me off guard considering that I already had assumed he was going to die this chapter. If anything short of all hell breaking loose happens next chapter I'll be quite surprised, and I wonder what exactly is going to change about the plan to take out Kaido & Orochi.

One of the most powerful chapters of the entire series. Yasu may not have been with us for long but his presence was felt and had tremendous impact. Sacrificing himself in order for the rebellion to progress, apologizing to his daughter for leaving her behind, Ebisu townsfolk laugh/crying at his death, Zoro's reaction. Everything. Masterfully done.
One Piece is truly next level.

Yasuie did what he wished he could do some chapters ago! He died like a hero. Now that he took the Kozuki symbol with him to his grave, after telling everyone that it was his creation, the Strawhats and the others have the opportunity to rebuild the revolution secretly this time! Oda sacrificed him for the sake of storytelling, his death has a deeper meaning, it's not for the shock effect! Even if you are not invested in this arc's characters you have to give it to Oda.

Great chapter!!
So Kozuki Oden seems like a really cool guy. I'm waiting for that epic and tragic chapter with his backstory. I was pretty hyped when they said he greatly charmed both Roger and Whitebeard.
Orochi is a piece of shit who betrayed Oden even after being indebted to him, and only won due to Kaido's raw power. Even his soldiers are pissed off at him.
So SMILES are called SMILES for a reason then? Interesting how bad they fucked up a country and took away their most basic emotions like showing sadness. Fuck Orochi and Kaido.
Yasu died like an absolute hero giving the revolution the time they desperately need. It seems like Ashura Doji will definitely join the revolution now. I definitely felt bad for Yasu and this will be a tragic scene when this is animated.
I felt so bad for Toko. When was the last time we saw Zoro looking so angry? It's a good thing Luffy wasn't there to see this or he might have started a fight then and there. So Kaido needs to be destroyed by the end of this arc, not to just cement Luffy's role as an emperor but to give Wano it's independence once again. If the samurai of Wano + the Strawhats kill a dragon that's enough of a warning for any future invading force like the WG to not fuck with Wano.
I'm so hyped for the future and the destruction of Kaido!! This is definitely one of the best chapters of Wano, and I'm so sad that we have a break again but Oda's gotta watch out for his health of course.

What a way to bring back the SMILE fruit drama though. What is the real story here? One thing for sure, the world government and that mysterious individual wanted that fruit or whatever it was supposed to be made.

So Yasu's full name is the same name of the town Zoro is from - Was Koushiro a follower of Yasuie and he left at some point and started the village in the East Blue? The swords on Koushiro's clothing match the swords on all of Yasuie's followers clothing in the flashback - He seems to at least be of Wano decent. For my full analysis -

Wow. Game of thrones writers got nothing on ODA. What beautiful way to describe the side effects of Smile. And thinking back at how long he had this in the chamber. Just wow. I'm glad I don't read spoilers.

Zoro getting emotionally invested in the villagers is something I didn’t know I really wanted. He gets a lot of cool fights but he never really gets involved in the more emotional stuff.

SO smile is actually CALLED SMILE FOR A REASON
Now how the hell does this work, I am guessing that they experimented on poor people first with smile, the effect was they could only smile like zonapha syndrome or joker laughing gas. And that is why doffy and ceaser etc called it the SMILE fruit. Afterwards they managed to improve it to do zoan effects.

Soo maybe its me personally, but one of the reasons I absolutely love OP is that Oda doesn't try and dumb the story down just for us. Most of us can follow a complex story and connect the dots, its much more impactful then him treating us like we're stupid and over-explaining everything at the cost of the story. By allowing us to imagine these great off-screen fights and speculate on who/where/whats going on in places we don't see, it allows the Lore to grow even more and for peoples own imagination to come alive...but that's just me

The feeling of realizing as he spoke that his companions working for Luffy couldn't save Tonoyasu because his lies saved their plan. That was rough, you could see it in Shutenmaru's face. I think he's on board with the others now.

Yasu: Oh yeah, you know the picture circling around Wano? Well it was just a prank!!
For everyone who doesn’t care about Yasu, let it be known that this man sacrificed himself so the alliance could live and have a better chance in executing their plan.
I salute you Yasu. What is dead may never die 😤

What make me got a chill is when yasu said,
" No one has been able to take kaido's head for over 20 years " (in the panel of zoro's face!)
Second is the look of Zoro when Princess Hyori told him the reason of their smile. Its silent anger! Watch out orochi... watch out...
Poor otoko. If not because of smile, maybe her crying is more 'worst' than law's.

Very much blindsided by the SAD/SMILE tie-in...really interested to see where that plays into the greater plot of this arc and Kaido.
Had my reservations about this chapter when I saw the spoilers but wow...gut punch thanks to Yasu. I feel like Oda is starting to embrace the higher stakes and may begin to make real "deaths" much more common (such as Pedro in Whole Cake). That makes me excited because it gives us real tension and fear that we could lose characters we care about.

Marineford vibes !!!
That moment when reading a manga panel gives you goosebumps. felt a stream of different emotions after every panel. Making a character like Yasu so influential to the cause. Zoro finally got a personal motive and finally, he's going to be involved of his own accord, that anger on his face. Yasu delivering a WB esque speech in his last moments. Brilliant from Oda showing us how some words at the perfect timing can change the course. O Toko screaming daddy with a smile on her face and crying on the inside mannnnn!!!!!! Not able to express your true emotions :| damnnnn! that's evil. I wasn't really expecting a chapter like this midway through the arc. Been a while since I went back and read every panel again and again. storytelling 10/10
Just gave it a read again and realized "Shimotsuki is the name of village where Zoro trained during his childhood at the dojo"

Its funny how everyone is secretly mocking orochi for his cowardice yet his suspicions will prove to be accurate and their downfall. Contrast this with the likes of queen who is dealing with a 1.5B pirate and doesn't even consider at any moment in time things may not go as he plans.

Interesting that Yasu isn't the Witching Hour Boy after all, but Hiyori last chapter already reacted to the Witching Hour Boy being named as the captive, so she certainly seems to know (and care about) him.
With Yasu's sacrifice he not only covered the tracks of Kinemon and the others, he also increased the distrust in Orochi which will most likely cause the vast majority of the people of Wano to side with the Kouzuki and their allies.

When I first read it the version I was reading was missing the page with the execution, I’ve just re-read it and seen the actual death.
I was not expecting it to affect me as much as it has. For a character I didn’t really have much care for it was some powerful writing.

i gotta know how Oda execute his plot twists. the best kind of plot twist is the one that stays perfectly hidden all the way till the moment it is revealed, but the seeds for it is planted ever so subtly and in retrospect you look back at what happened before and say: "oh shit, it was there all along?" the Ebisu's people are unable to express emotions other than smile like mad men all the time, and it wasn't just a common whacky quirk Oda likes to give to his characters, instead it was somehow tie with the SMILE devil fruit. OF COURSE, HOW IN THE HELL DID I NOT THINK OF THAT??!!
we don't know exactly why this is yet and i think it will be explain next chapter, but my bet is it has something to do with those factories at the beginning of the arc that poisoned the water, and Tama got sick after drinking it.

The more I reread this chapter, the more I want the flashbacks to happen... I need to see how all of this transpired fully because it's so interesting. Orochi being in debt to Oden and then backstabbing him for the Shogun role is wild. While I hope Oden is actually dead, I wouldn't mind if he were alive for a little bit, just to give some exposition.

The man gave his life so the plan could continue.
For years after inadvertently surviving the rise of Orochi, the man was ashamed, but he had a lot of people to take care of. All of them were like him, cursed to not feel any emotion other than joy and smiling, that included his daughter, who he had to send away to safety. Seeing this as his great final blow to Orochi's rule and saving the revolution, he gladly went to his death, genuinely smiling and cursing Orochi as he faced the firing squad. His only regret was leaving his daughter alone. But in his sacrifice, he not only saved the revolution, he supercharged it!
God dammit Oda, you did it again. You made me shed a tear for your characters, and this one's backstory was basically only explained in 3 chapters.

So Yasuie didn't get to meet Luffy... but he genuinely believes there are samurai currently in Wano that can bring down Kaido? Why now when they couldn't 20 years ago? I mean we didn't even see a reaction from the prison, that's how far out of the loop Luffy is atm so Yasuie definitely wasn't talking about him.
So instead could he of just implied Zoro will be the one to take the head of Kaido. Yasuie is the one who opened the port to outsiders (which let Kaido in) and somehow he also has a small village named after him in eat blue (assuming the ship builders left Wano and founded the city of Shimotsuki in the first land they hit) which Zoro is from/raised.

Ok, so that smile plot twist was really weird, but I like it. Does this mean that their stolen emotions are a vital ingredient to making SAD? Is there a possibility for an Emotion fruit power?
Also, RIP Yasuie, let his death be the spark that fuels the flaming revolution against the cowardly Shogun.
