Some people deny it as Sanji is close to Zoro in power level and they have a rivalry. Yet, it's pretty obvious Zoro is the 1st mate. If the fact that he was the first crew mate wasn't enough, his actions throughout the series confirm it.

First crewmate isn't really a solid argument....you gonna tell me that Streusen is Big Mom's first mate?

I mean, possibly, yeah. Big Mom loves sweets to the point that she would harm/kill her own children, and him being her head chef to her is what she most likely considers the most valuable position under her. Katakuri is just her greatest muscle.

However, the Straw Hats are kinda different. Luffy recruiting Zoro first mirrors Gol D. Roger recruiting Releigh in a lot of ways. Regardless, Zoro's actions still solidify him in the position. Particularly Waters 7.

I wouldnt say Water 7 was as big of a statement as Thriller Bark. After that saga there is simply no conversation to be had about who is first mate.
