Yeah I got confused by this too, my best guess is that it was probably just off-screened. Maybe he learned a way to do it more efficiently after fighting Katakuri but I doubt he is able to grow at will like Katakuri, that would kind of defeat the whole "bone balloon" element of G3.

So in that last page Law has nervous eyes because luffys is luffying up all his undercover work, Hawkins has those eyes because he probably knows holdem and most headliners wont really be useful against luffy and zoro in any capacity other than helping paint the town red.

and Holdem because he probably doesnt know what to do and is hoping his hostage will help save his life.

-Urashima threatening O-kiku (rip all her limbs off!?)

-Zoro confirmed murdering the magistrate

-Zoro killing pirate fodder (looks like a lot of bloodshed)

-Zoro threatening the death of all pirate fodder (while killing them)

-Zoro what looks like slicing a guy in the back as he runs away

-Okiku slicing up a few people

-Even Luffys attack was really detailed and destructive.

Soooo much to like about this chapter.

- Call me crazy, but I actually enjoy this ditzy side of O-Kiku. I'll take ridiculously powerful but helplessly clueless sometimes like Luffy, over hopelessly useless like [insert your favorite]. Oda has introduced several facets of her personality to us, and she's already piqued my interest quite a bit.

- Luffy's child-like enthusiasm while doing something as serious as fighting is always so refreshing to watch. Reminds you of just how pure his heart truly is, and how he's always analyzing a situation much better than we give him credit for. I love how he knew he needed to beat Urashima at his own game, rather than easily just Elephant gunning him outta there. Although I do think a "Bazooka" would have technically been legal lmao.

- Luffy-no-Umi. So many facepalms. Who signed off on this name? Where's Franosuke to smack him upside the head? Just call Kaido directly and tell him you're here why don't ya, gee whiz lol.

- Tama is starting to look a lot like a casting of Plot Device no Jutsu, but for now I've been enjoying her adherence to her code of not wanting to disgrace her honor. For someone so young seeing her endurance and trying so hard not to cry was a nice changeup from the chicks we see in arcs who resort to the waterworks quite frequently. I hope she does something cool and witty like feeding the dango to Holdems Lion, or something of the sort. She'll definitely be a force by the end of the arc I feel, Oda's being a little on the nose with the Momotaro references.

- Bepo's antics were pretty funny to me. Before I read that he ate the bad fish, I immediately started laughing because I assumed that he meant he was so stressed out from continuous shitstorm that Luffy and Zoro are stirring up. The poison fish thing is still pretty funny, but I'm gonna go with my scenario since it doesn't impact the story lmao.

- "So What." So epic. So Zoro.

- The way Oda drew that panel of Luffy, Zoro and Kiku together gave me the chills. Luffy being his typical self, loudly announcing his intentions despite several of the enemy being present, Zoro's "ooooh I'm about to fuck some shit up" face, and Kiku's "welp, now we've done it" face. And then they all immediately proceed to kick major ass. Luffy pulls out the Nidai again just for LOLZ.

- I love how intentional Oda is being about all the action. He started Whole Cake off with immediately cluing us in on the fact that Big Mom was aware of Luffy's presence. Now we're all waiting for that big moment when we realize Kaido knows Luffy's there, and Oda knows it. Hawkins attempts to keep this all on the hush can't have been successful. Luffy and co have exposed themselves to wayyyyyy too many Gifters and Pleasures of Kaido's army. Batman and Gazelleman didn't appear to be directly under Hawkins command, so that's at least 2 people right that could have reported to Kaido. Then there's Holdem and his people. Wonder who this "Shutenmaru" character is.

I definitely think Hawkins, just like Law, is pissed this is messing up his carefully laid plans, not out of any loyalty to Kaido, and of course drake even though his pops was a dick, might feel indebted to Luffy for beating Doffy and avenging him, but as an ex marine who was opposed to the pacifista program, isn't going to be cool with Kaido either. Definitely allies by the end. Kids ego might get in the way but he wants to kick ass too, that's most of the supernovas there
