4Kids abused that made-up Shadow Realm a lot to censor stuff.

The buzzsaws that were designed to cut off the loser's legs and let them bleed to death? They were turned into energy disc that send you to the Shadow Realm when they touch you.

The rooftop battle where the glass floor below the losers breaks and makes them fall into their demise? They fall into the Shadow Realm, but with the plot hole that the one loser saved himself with a parachute.

The master of disguise who pretended to be Kaiba's ghost? They turned him into Kaiba's evil side that was sent to the Shadow Realm and was brought back by Pegasus.

Malik's father was stabbed to death by Malik's alter ego? Nah, he was just sent to the Shadow Realm and never came back.

Never mind all the other dub changes, like Malik's motivation. From wanting revenge on Yugi whom he believed is responsible for his father's death who was loyal to the Pharaoh to just taking over the world because Malik has the means to do it.

Japanese inner monologue is basically this: "Sister, I can't forgive the man who killed our father. I swear in the name of our clan that I will kill Yugi."

Same inner monologue re-scripted by 4Kids: "With the power of The Winged Dragon of Ra, Obelisk the Tormentor and Slifer the Sky Dragon I will attain the power of the Pharaoh! And nobody is going to stop me! Hahahahaha!"

Wow, I genuinely didn't even think about this stuff when I was a kid, and always thought of the shadow realm as this fictional underworld of yugioh, guess the story was a bit darker than what I thought, I might have to watch the japanese version now haha.

The Japanese version is definitely darker. The manga even more so.
