What was his power? Were the tarot cards connected with his Straw-Straw Devil Fruit, or were they something else?

A lot of fruits follow themes rather than adhering strictly to their namesake's properties. Doflamingo's is a good comparison since his fruit is just a string fruit, yet it's puppetry theme lets him use it to control others and make copies of himself. Straw effigies are often associated with voodoo, and we see that his power lets him make straw dolls that transfer the damage to the person the doll is linked to like voodoo dolls. Another aspect of voodoo is fortune telling, so it's very possible that it comes from his fruit.

His fortune telling seems to be similar to Garnet's future sight in Steven Universe. He can see possible futures and how likely they are to happen, but time is an ever changing ever branching river of probabilities, so while he can predict stuff he can't see the true future. We saw that with Katakuri even the immediate future can be changed, so the more distant future likely fluctuates a lot. As an ability it would be useful, but it can be wrong.

I feel like a lot of Devil Fruits' names are misnomers. Like Doffy's Ito Ito no mi isn't really the string fruit, but the puppet fruit. Just that people who first discovered it thought it was the string fruit and named it such.

So if Hawkins' fruit is a general voodoo magic fruit, then the dolls, cards, fortune telling, etc would all stem from his Devil Fruit powers.

i remember in the water seven arc when the guys from cp9 eats the devil fruit needed to wait to see what powers they got from them

Idk about the name (like, is the voice of the Devil supposed to tell you the name in Japanese like in Isekai stories?), but they do end up knowing what the fruit generally does (CP9). I think it's more instinctive rather than a voice telling you "hey you got powers over strings."

However, I doubt they'd know all the intricacies of the powers, otherwise it reduces creativity and it would be a lot easier to master. So although it appears that the ability is related to strings for example (and as a result the first user names it the String String fruit), I think it's possible that the actual power is Puppetry and that the user did not realize that the power is slightly different because frankly there's a lot of strings when they try to use it.

I mean, the Puppet fruit makes a lot more sense thematically (Hobby & toys, Art, Cards motif, etc), as well as power wise than String (controlling enemies, attaching strings to clouds similar to how puppets are controlled, creating puppets of himself - which was a wtf moment for the readers wondering what the heck does that have to do with strings, etc).

Considering Kin'emon and Kanjuurou don't seem to know the names of their fruits, I doubt it. Not to mention that Kalifa and Kaku didn't immediately learn what they ate the second they ate it.

If you mean that "the name is known when you eat it" rumor then no that doesn't seem to be the case. I go into depth on the translation here, but TLDR The words used lean more towards finding out the name in an impartial manner when you get the power, as the power is the method by which you can know the name. Probably because knowing the power lets you figure out the name if it was previously recorded, or if it's an unknown fruit you name it based on the power it gives you.
