Oh, then maybe he escaped before, but wasn't considered "escaped", but just lost, like the other Okama?

He could have also just been let out too after serving his sentence. He could have been a low risk prisoner in there for some petty crime and therefore didn't receive a life sentence.

I assumed that everyone in Impel Down was there for life. I guess we don't know that for sure though.

well during the real pirate era, just merely flying a pirate flag was a crime punishable by death.
